1st chapter, 1st section 9th Sutra –
Swaabhyaayaath!
Just one word!
Gambhirananda: because of the merger of the individual into his own self
Veereshananda: on account of individual soul merging in its own self or the universal self referred to as the ‘sath’ in the deep sleep, the pradhana cannot be denoted by the word ‘self.’
The uniqueness of Baadarayana Bhagavan Veda Vyasa is through each sutra, he creates a complete new thought trend! Unimaginable and incomprehensible. That is the two word I can say.
Swaabhyaayaath!
Because of the merger of the individual into his own self. In the last sutra which we saw yesterday, he is talking about the different aspects of the ignorance. The possibilities of ignorance. In this sutra suddenly he takes a complete turn because the identity which you carry merges into the ultimate existence by its own self, by itself, you can’t speak even about the individual identity. Yesterday’s sutra he was saying you cannot speak about the pradhana – the existence – because bondage & liberation is only for the dust, only for the small identity you have. So the pradhana neither experiences bondage nor experiences liberation. Only it is the identity you carry, dust you have experiences bondage or liberation. But in this sutra Bhagavan Veda Vyasa takes us to a space completely different. He says one step further – even the individual identity cannot be defined because it merges on its own into the pradhana – pradhana means the origin, the main subject, the soul, cosmic self, Brahman, existence, the soul. Today Vyasa goes one step further – even about identity you cannot talk. Even about identity you cannot make any understanding. Because the identity merges on to self on its own! It merges on to self on its own. He is taking us step by step to the deeper & deeper silence. Usually the philosophers are supposed to be very dumb impractical fellows. Vyasa I can say a very practical philosopher. Being practical and being philosophical both has happened in Vyasa. Vyaasa is a high achiever. The high achiever mentality always makes you highly practical. Philosophical mind which does not achieve is the most cunning & crooked mind – most cunning & crooked mind! Impractical philosophers will always be losers in life. Impractical philosophers will be worst losers because they have not touched the reality. Still they are stuck in one layer. Socrates lived outside his house in the Verandah. He was never allowed inside the house. He was a great philosopher to whole world but basically a loser. Impractical philosophers are still stuck in one layer – they are not in reality.
Alright, I have a small story about a philosopher – one guy and great philosopher having 3 doctorate go on a camping trip. After finishing their dinner they go to sleep
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." The philosopher says "I see millions and millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" says Holmes. Watson pondered for a minute.
"Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically I see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant part of the universe. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. What does it tell you? he asks his friend. Friend says “you idiot! Somebody has stolen our tent!" ☺
Philosophers are great losers. That is why in Bharat we never had philosophy, we had philosophia means Darshana. In Bharat all philosophers are supposed to be seers, seeing not thinking. No. In the Bharatn tradition we insist on experiencing – philosia, not just philosopher. Philosophers suffer. Rishis are not philosophers, philoseers - seers. Vyasa is not adding more & more words to us. He is taking away more & more words away from us. He is making us more empty. Yesterday itself I was thinking what can I comment on this sutra because he says nothing can be spoken about the source - pradhana. Today he is saying even nothing can be spoken about identity. Even about the identity you cannot speak anything! He uses a very beautiful word, ‘on its own’. Please understand, your identity by its very nature winds up all the drama of seeing the forms and names, retires itself into its inner space once in every 21 hours. See the individual self creates this whole drama. Creates this life, world, society, whatever you see, touch, experience, smell, think. But the greatness of the pradhana – the source is just it sucks the identity. How much ever you try, your identity cannot be separated from that source, once in 21 hours it feels tired of all this drama, dumps everything, retires and goes back. Just goes back to its source - the automatic resting mechanism, the automatic retiring mechanism!
Every day by its nature, self settles into the source. It rests into the source. Nothing much needs to be done. What nothing much, even if you do anything or don’t do anything, every night your individual self retires into the pradhana – the atman, self, consciousness, sath, existence. Because by itself the self rests into the pradhana, even the quality of the identity you carry is not consistent or consistently based on certain factual realities. You need to understand that. I am just seeing clearly whatever I am uttering is just going over ☺ I am just saying something, by the time I utter the 2nd statement, all the fellows have gone somewhere and coming back ☺ almost between every gap you guys go to the source the existence once and come back. It is like a awakening the non-mechanical parts of your brain is almost like keeping the 100 dogs tails straight. So first I hold one dog’s tail straight and hold it back, then I hold the 2nd dog’s tail and hold it with another hand. Then I run and catch the 3rd dog’s tail and hold it, then the 4th. By the time I catch the 5th dog’s tail, the 1st dog ran away! Somehow whole day yesterday I made you understand that pradhana is the prime all source, origin. Somehow yesterday I logically made you understand that you cannot speak about the origin because the liberation and bondage you feel is only for the identity you feel not for origin. So the origin cannot be expressed by any words because it is beyond your intelligence! It is beyond comprehension. Now Vyasa is taking us a step further saying even about the identity you cannot grasp anything because the identity also is not disconnected. Its connected basically - it gets sucked into the source everyday even without your intention. Even if you try to keep this identity away seeing all these names and forms, at one point it retires and dumps everything everyday in deep sleep it reaches the source. He just takes away all the words as the identity does not have its own existence and gets sucked into the source again & again & again, even your identity is not a consistent, individual, independent entity. But by force and pressure because you needed something to hold on to make your life meaningful, you love to give meanings to things. Really. When you walk there is a beautiful garden, the rose is there, birds are there – why should you give even the meaning beautiful? It is there. That’s all. The moment you try to give the meaning beautiful, even your neighbor makes his garden in the same junk way as you made. These modern day kids wear the torn jeans. They make it as a fashion. Cut it here & there. So whenever you add idea, meaning you feel it is alive! So you want to add meaning to whatever you see & experience in front of you. The original sin is trying to add meaning to what is happening in front of you. That’s all. If you stop this one thing – this non-sensical habit of trying to give meaning to everything, trying to add juice to everything – if you can retire just from that one thing, if you stop adding meaning then suddenly you will understand your identity which you think as very consistent every day, is NOT consistent. That will be one of the major realizations to achieve the source of existence. Buddha gives a power example – if you switch on a torch and rotate at high speed, you see a fire circle. It is not a fire circle. In every inch that torch is moving. Same way in your life, you feel your identity has solid existence. It does not. The high speed moment at which it moves, makes you feel like it has an individual existence. The high speed moment is responsible.
One year before the identity with which you woke up morning, one month before with which you woke up, today with which you woke up are not consistent. But you force yourself to believe it is consistent. Because if it is not consistent, then suddenly the base on which you are building your life loses value, meaning. Knowing that nothing has value you want to hold on to something like a consolation. You know end of day money has no value, relationships has no value, your body has no value. If you peel, peel, peel, nothing has any value. But you cannot face that. So we need to believe in something to kkep our self alive. But I tell you when you understand there is no value to anything, you become a high achiever!
But Normal mind tries to superimpose value. Trying to impose value is the reason why you feel the identity is consistent, comprehensible, individual character. Actually you do not have a individual quality or a character or a identity – but this truth seems to be too much. You need to project yourself with some consistency. So what to do? You try to give meaning to it. When you try to give meaning to something to make it look like consistent, the ignorance becomes alive.
The sacred secret in this sutra is stop giving meaning to things. Understand the identity you are getting every morning when you wake up is not consistent to yesterday’s. Just new new comes – meaningless! If there is meaning in anything there will not be excitement in that. Excitement to exist happens only if it is meaningless. If there is a clear meaning, definition you will be completely bored because you know everything. Why to do? If you are bored of unclutching understand you are not doing it. You made a meaning out of unclutching. If you are every moment practicing it, it will be intensely exciting, never be boring. Understand life is meaningless. That is the only way to live in a excited way. If you try to add consistent meaning, the excitement is taken away. You are a poor philosopher – philo suffer!
Teaching each sutra is almost for me is adding one one dog’s tail in my hand and keeping it straight ☺ By the time I add 5th 6th dog, the 1st dog ran away! The sacred secret from this sutra is because the identity merges on its own into the self origin, you can’t even grasp or understand about the identity. 2nd because the identity is not consistent do not try to give meaning to it or buildings you built on it to keep itself meaningful or consistent. Identity being meaningless is ok. That will keep the excitement of life in life. Don’t try to know everything! So now neither you can speak about the Pradhana which is source, nor you can speak about the individual identity which feels the bondage or liberation because that does not exist. Understand see the individual identity which you think exists should exist individually. But it is not. Even if you do not want to get enlightened, every 21 hours it is sucked back into the origin. So even the identity you carry is not solid as you think. Then why do we feel it is solid? Because we want to give meaning to it. Don’t give meaning. Naturally it will lose its solid feeling. When you understand your identity is not solid, you will be more aware, alive ready to live. Because you are more alive, aware, ready to live spontaneously, you will naturally become high achiever. High achiever is a man who is ready to go through any complications in the life - ups and downs! That ability will happen in you only when you are clear about not to give any consistent meaning to your identity. If you have enough guts to live the identity which is changing every day knowing all this is meaningless, you develop a high ability to be a high achiever. I tell you anybody who is lying in a couch and says he is enlightened, never believe.
Ramana Maharshi was never lying down in a couch. Only the photos were taken like that. He was working very hard and used the grinding machine in the kitchen every day. Now the grinding machine has taken 2 incarnations – one electric grinder, and two the huge belly! No in those days because they used to do all this manually, the belly was not growing. Those days they used to grind and the belly will not grow. Ramana Maharshi used to grind rice everyday!
Once Tapasyananda Swami from Ramakrishna Mutt he translated Bhagavatam in a amazing way in English. He goes to see Ramana Maharshi. He asked somebody where is Bhagavan? They said go to the kitchen. He will be there. He saw some 10 men doing different things. One was washing vessels, one was cooking, grinding, another one was cutting vegetables. He could not understand and identify who is Ramana Maharshi. He went to the man who was grinding and asked who is Ramana Maharshi? Exactly he is Bhagavan☺ Bhagavan looked this side & that side and showed a big brass vessel which had Ramana written on it! Tapasyanandaji did not understand. Then Bhagavan said at least on that vessel the name Ramana is written and so is more Ramana than this body! He said if you give that title Ramana to this vessel it is more apt that giving it to this body where it is not written. Then Tapasyanandaji understood he is Bhagavan and fell at his feet!
Ramana Maharshi was never a couch potato. A man who experienced existence can never be a couch potato. Bhagavan is a high achiever. Being a high achiever is an un-coverable quality of enlightenment. If you are not a high achiever, forget about it! It is not for you or for anyone who enters into your breathing space. Bhagavan is a high achiever! His ability to transfer the core to few 1000s and cause highest cognitive shift to 1000s is unimaginable. Being a high achiever.
I will try to catch and keep the tail of the dogs once more straight. Your identity has not individual existence because every day it gets sucked into the source. 2nd you try to give meanings and try to make it consistent because you try to build too many buildings. 3rd stop building based on identity you carry because you will realize it never existed, it will never exist. 4th when you realize that your identity itself does not exist, you will live with high excitement and that will make you a high achiever even in this so called materialistic world filled with meanings. Blessings!
