In Brahmasutras -

1st chapter, part 1, 24th sutra

Jyothihi charana abhidaanath

The translation -

Swami Gambhirananda – Light is Brahman because of the mention of feet

Swami Vireshwarananda - the word light is Brahman on account of mention of the feet in a complimentary passage

Swami Shivananda - On acct of mention of feet light is Brahman in a passage which is connected with a passage about light.

Let me give you some of the references. The expression Jyothi, Light is next taken up for discussion in the Chandokya Upanishad – 3rd chapter, 13th canto, 7th sloka discusses

Athaha yatataha parodibo jyothir deepyathe vishwathaha prushtyeshu…anuttameshu uttameshu lokeshu …purushe jyothihi

Meaning - Now that light which shines above this heaven, higher than all higher than everything in the highest worlds beyond which there are no other worlds, that is the same light which is within man.

Here the word Jyothi – light is used as equivalent about Brahman. To talk about Brahman, to mention about Brahman, the word Jyothi is used.

Now that light which shines above this heaven, higher than all higher than everything in the highest worlds beyond which there are no other worlds, that is the same light which is within man.

There are some more references in Chandokya Upanishad 3rd chapter 12th canto 6th sloka

Tavaamasya mahimatatho jayaamscha purushaha pado…sarva bhootani tripadasyo ..

Such is its greatness greater than this is the purusha, one foot of it is all beings, while its remaining 3 feet are its immortal in heaven! Let us understand some of the sacred secrets in this sutra. What really Vyasa wants to convey through this sutra. Pl understand, what really Vyasa wants to convey. Anything which you cannot comprehend by your visualization is equated, used for referring, used as a referral point for Brahman. Please understand anything which you cannot comprehend by the mind, which you are not able to catch it by the mind, I used as referring method, referral point to refer Brahman. Just through this Vyasa is trying to explain, to make us understand the inexplicable Brahman which can’t be caught by your mind, which you can’t comprehend. Try to visualize light. How much ever you visualize you will always feel you have not caught it. Visualize then naturally the moment you visualize it becomes dark. Please und the moment you visualize light just because of the boundary it has become dark. You cannot visualize the light which has no boundary. You can’t visualize the light which has no boundary the moment you visualize it with boundary it has become dark. Now it is dark. Just now I was asking some of our ashramites. They were asking Swamiji how come Gita is so juicy and BS so boring? The problem is in Gita Krishna is saying more catch this, catch this, catch this. But the whole BS is saying not this, not this, not this. BS is created for a diff mental set up. I can say in the modern day there are no ppl in that mental set up. It has almost become outdated very unfortunately. At least the community which is dedicated for the enlgithenemt should have kept the high quality mental set up. See when einsteen was alive totally only a hand full of ppl got the theory of what he was talking…because he was not able to create…same way maybe it will take a few years for people who will understand Brahma Sutras. Unfortunately the Bharatn Brahmin community which was responsible, which was supposed to be keeping that science alive was abused, disrespected and forced to work for the stomach, means forced to take up a job for living. In Bharat we had a community ….you will have a very high evolved mental set up. The subtle grooves in the brain will be developed with which you can grasp this great truths and concepts. Unfortunately after the independence they are not supported anymore. Now they are on their own to make their living, food. Naturally what will happen? … British has taken away the respect we had for the traditional education. In 1900 just in few months, they took away the they took only 2-3 months to enforce this law, taking away the right of giving certification or the respect for the traditional universities we had. So the whole educational system is mechanized, our way of education is completely lost. So what that community can do? Actually 3% of Bharat is that community. We dedicated 3% of our population just to keep that r\&d alive. Research and development in the field of …alive. But unfortunately they are not given food, shelter, they are not taken care and the whole respect given to them is taken away and they are no more authorizied to teach or their teachings are not certified anymore what to do then? they dropped everything they have to go for the mechanized education system and unfortunately they have to follow the British the first circle servants of British like lawyers, clerks, officers. Finally they used our cream brains to destroy us. During British time, british used them in that way. And after the independence again they have not given any place nor supported so that they continue with their R\&D. They are neither funded nor supported to continue their supported. Neither moral nor economical support, NATURally what to do? They started going for regular job or IT job or some other job dropping the full time job of protecting the VT. I can say the worst thing happened to VT is the Brahmins were forced to give up full time job of protecting VT. They have to take.. up full time job …but this one step of Brahmins moving away from this full time job and taking up regular job, regular education, secular job and secular education is the worst blow happened to VT. Still the VT is not able to get out of that blow. All of us, all religious and spiritual organizations put together I can name thousands of names. Even all of us put together are not able to fill 5% of that gap, that void because the Brahmins of this country were so well organized in their way of transmitting the knowledge. With no audio visual recording systems. Just the teacher will sit. Many time he will be old, sometime even blind. He will repeat from his memory without even changing the tone, the disciples will pick up! Then after the study, the further research thinking, developing all that will continue. Please understand it is not only spiritual and religious knowledge was stored in our universities. If you are thinking in that way you are wrong. Knowledge about astronomy, astrology, metallurgy, knowledge about everything architecture, in ever line the Brahmins have done so much of research and development. Unfortunately when that community was forced to take up secular job, the void created, the gap created still we are not able to fill. Still we are not able to fill! All of us together, name all organizations we are not able to fill! I can create few million disciples who are ready to enjoy the practical aspects of Vedic Tradition. Like when I help them to come out of dep, when I heal them to be out of some disease, when I help ppl to have more joy and bliss, when I help them to have better realtionships…they enjoy huge crowd gathers around me. pl unde this only making the VT practical. This is not supporting to the pure science of VT. Supporting to the pure science of VT, I need a diff kind of ppl who are not too much involved just in making things practical. Pl und making things practical is necessary so that we are still useful to ppl. That is the purpose whole tradition is created. But if all scientists are busy with applied science, nobody will be concentrating in the pure science and new new researches will not happen…usefulness and productivity of the research and development they are doing..in completing every thought without loop. Pl und, there are hundreds of new ideas usually these r& d ppl get. But only those ideas which is being funded, they take only those thots to a logical conclusion.

For ex, a scientist may get a thought to discover medicine for diabetes and he may get a thot to study very deeply how genetically diabetes is transmitted. Naturally he will start working to discover the medicine to diabetes becos the company who is funding him will be interested only in that …

The moment the get the medicine they will make money. But he will not be alloved to think and work how diabetes is getting transmitted genetically…if you look deeper you ned ppl who think in that line also. so that some other odors can open, some other possibilities can flower. But unfortunately, the researches which are not directly useful to the society, those thought trends are never taken to the logical conclusions becos of the pressure to be productive.

Even around us, see all modern day organizations are making vedic tradition enrich your life. They are based on this vision making the VT useful to all of youi and make you all better human beings. Of cosure I am no way disrespecting theis concept. Iall I am saying is this is not enuf. Its like this is like a multiplying the money we have. We have for example a tone gold using that gold and making more and more jewelries, sometime adding little copper, little silver, so more & more jewelries are made out of this ton gold we have. But no time and energy is spent to get more gold, mine more gold. Putting our energy into pure science is trying to mine more gold. Unfortunately which is not happening becos you need a unique kind of a mental set up ppl. That is why I insist all my devotees, whenever I see our devotees who are born as Brahmin but taken up a job to run his life I tell him – aiy at least take one Brahmin boy poor boy who runs his life in supporting the r\&d. take care of him, support him. because you have committed the sin of ..of course you are forced... …take care at leaset one poor Brahmin boy spends his life in doing the r\&d to keep the VT alive so that at least after 10 15 yrs we get the cream crowd which can spend time on pure science.

In TN there was a unique understanding between the communities. If you see the Tiru temple structure you will understand how each commuttiy was given a unique resp of keeping the life of the society alive. One community is supposed to take care of all the rituals, one community is supposed to take care of all the temple manintenance, one community is supposed to take care of all the water necessity of the whole town, one community is supposed to take care of all the construction, one community is supposed to take care of all the ppl’s need of clothes and chappals and I am surprised still even now till now all the 16 communities are doing their responsibility at least in my home town! Till now, understand even if they get the job outside the city, they don’t go out, they say no it’s a family prestige. Still in Tiruvanamalai who gets shoes for me, his grandfather has got shoes has made for my grandfather, who makes clothes for me his great grandfather got clothes for my great grand father, who has done puja for me his great .., for my great grand pa. the 16 communities are keeping the stability of the town. See there are millions of people who go on abusing our community mental set up in the VT. I only challenge all these guys who abuse the community set up, who abuse this caste system, I request them to come up with some other systems which will keep the country alive for 5k years. Why don’t these great revolutionary guys come oiut with some other system forget about 5k years, at leatst 50 years. What 50 years they cant make their next generation to listen to what they are saying. Forget about 50 years. At least in next 20-30 years I feel the community which was dedicated for r\&d should be recreated. I wanted all our devotees who are Brahmins by birth to give birth to give birth to one more child. If you want 2, give birth to one more and hand over the child to Gurukul and see that the child contributes to the original r& d in our VT. There is so much need to be done in our VT, so much of exploration need to be done. We neither have the ppl nor the money. Becos all money is spent too busy and all ppl spent and too busy in western way of living, western life style. It is my order to all my devotees who are from the Brahmin community - become productive! If you want 3, go for 4, if you want 1, go for 2. Let the one child start studying the vedas. Let the one child start doing research & development. …see only I know the pain of not having ppl who will keep the pure science alive. See for pure science you need a mental set up. Almost the whole day your mind should be contemplating on thses concepts. Even while washing your hands you should be thinking is this water Brahman, is this hand Brahman? What is the truth, why am I washing the hand? The mental set up constantly flying in that line.

There is a story one scientist had a cat and he told his carpenter every night this fellow scratches the door, and disturbs, make a hole for him let him come and go whenever he wants. The carpeneter made a hole. Cat gave birth to kitten. Immd the scientist called the carpenter again make a small hole for the kitten also. the carpenter said

See he is not practical. When you are full time in the pure science, you will loose practicality. You are not practical. You will forget many practical things of life. But wee need ppl, we need human beings who will spend little time in pure science even if they become impractical. It is so unfortunate that we are not able to afford few ppl at least 1% of ppl who will be able to dedicate their life in pure science! Because here I am enjoying explaining this who BS but the other side only the camera is capturing it! it is too boring on,ly the camera is capturing. Even I feel bad sometime.this truths are expressed in a very sharp way, in a very subtle way which will be useful only for ppl who creat Gurus. Pl und this book is not even for Jagath Gurus. It is for the gurus who create Jagath GUurs. It is like if there is so much of research done in the line of how genetically diabetes is transmitted from one person to other person, this research will not be directly useful to create a diabetes medicine, but it can open doors for you to find how diff diseases are transmitted genetically and how you can tackle, handle. See it is a totally diff line. The pure science is a totally diff line. BG is more applied science. That is why it has become so popular. But BS is a pure science. More like a possibility for new new doors opening. New new things happening. New new experiences expressing itself. Here Vyaasa says

Jyotihi charana abhidaanaath

Light is also considered to mention Brahman, to denote Brahman, to refer Brahman. Why? Because you cannot visualize light. It is impossible to visualize light. If you are able to visualize there is a boundary you have given, some shape you have given. The moment you have given shape it is no more light. It is darkness. Und the moment you have given a shape it is no more a light. It is light surrounding by darkness or it is light appearing amidst the darkness! If you try to imagine light, impossible to visualize, impossible to imagine. That is why in all religions light is used as a sacred symbol not just in Hinduism, not just in Shaivism, in all different traditions of Hinduisum, even in Buddhism, even in Christianity, Judaism, Parsism, Sikhism, Jainism, Islam - in all traditions light is considered as a sacred symbol. Of course in Hinduism light plays a major role. In my own native place one of the oldest Vedic University Arunachala light is worshipped as a main deity. Main deity itself is embodiment of life. main diety. Jyotihi, deepaha ..this is recorded as one of the oldest traditions – worshipping light - putting a huge light on the top of the hill and worshipping it. so the light is the center of the worship. It represents Brahman in almost all traditions becos you cant visualize it. try to visualize light, try continuously to visualize the light without bourndayry, you will disappear into it!

Vaacha….Brugadaranayaka Upanisad – 4th hapter 3rd canto 5th sloka

Speech only as light man sits whatever illumines something else may be considered as light. Whatever shows the other things and its own existence is light. The source of the whole universe is always remembered as light in Vedic Tradition. The source of the whole is always remembered as a light because light is something which you can’t visualize. And here I am supposed to talk about something which you can’t visualize in one hour. How will ti not be boring?..unfortunately I have to speak one hour. Naturally people feel bored when the negation has to be again & again explained. The next reference of light being referred as God & Brahman

In BU 4th chapter, 4th canto 16th sloka, 16th verse

Yasmaath arva samvatsaro ahobhi parivartate tadeva jyotisham..amrutham

The meaning says him the Gods worship as the light of lights, as the immortal. Light of lights – only when you visualize the endless light again & again & again you will realize it is impossible for you to visualize! It is not possible for you to mentally capture the meaning of the word Jyotihi, mentally understand the meaning of the word Jyotihi. I can say this leads you to meditate on something with which, on which you can’t meditate. Vyasa is ttarting a new thot trend on which the VP KM can start – can you meditate on light? Where you are lead is diff. try the KM can we mediate on light?...

Light is such you can catch when you start, you can’t grasp in the end.

Very beautifully a SIDDHA DESCRIBES in the 5 elements - Earth, water, fire, air and ether – air and ether are formless, water and are solid form. The fire is neither form nor formless. It has a form but does not have a form Not only that fire has capacity, if you put this earth and water into it, it will absorb the form and make that into air and ether – formless. That is why Guru is considered as fire who goes on making form into formlessness. Disciples come to him with name and form, he swallows the whole thing and maies them some ananda and some form. takes from name to nameless form to formless…he makes them nameless and formless. Like Agni. When water and earth goes to agni, agni digests them and makes them air and ether, form becoming formless. So Jyothi is the bridge, Jyothi is the energy which makes form into formlessness, name into namelessness. That is the reason light is respected as God, used to refer God, used to refer Brahman, used to refer cosmic existence. Form becoming formless, name becoming nameless happens through light. Do the KM, VP can we meditateo n light? Is it possible to meditate on light? It is possible becos you are able to meditate on it, it is not possible becis you rea no able to medi on it.

In the end when you expand , light without boundary cant be grasped..so understand you can meditate on light and you cannot meditate on light. You can visualize light, you cant visualize light. Start the KM VP you will be abel to explore the deeper & deeper possibilities. You can und the deeper …2nd how can this lead us to enlightenment, how can this experience

Do theis KM, VP on this 2 points

1. Can we meditate on light 2. How it will lead us to cosmic experience 328-11-76-13
