188th Patanjali Yoga Sutras, 4th chapter 26th verse – Almost he is giving the essence of the whole book this last 10 sutras. It may look like repetition. But it not repetition it is condensation.
Tatha vaahi viveka nimnam kaivalya praap bhaara chittam
Vivekananda’s Editorial team: Then bent in discriminating, the mind attains the previous state preliminary to kaivalya isolation
Prabhavananda: when the mind is bent on practice of discrimination it moves towards liberation
Satchitananda: when the mind stuff discriminates it moves towards liberation
Osho: When the mind is inclined towards discrimination it gravitates towards liberation
Maybe I will alter the word gravitation with levitation. I will say when your every thought moves with discrimination, automatically your whole system levitates towards liberation. Gravitation is more like pulling down and levitation more like pulling up. Actually when you are moving up you will feel light. He uses the word bhaara which roughly translates to gravitation. But the experience itself I can say is more like levitation. You become light. That is why all things which makes you light heals your body and mind. Neem juice makes you light, enema makes you light – it heals the body & mind.
Yesterday I was reading. Somebody gave me Puli Paani siddhar’s photograph. I digged out a book mentioned on that. they used neem juice as enema and healed many of the mental disorders. Neem juice is given as enema instead of water and they healed mental disorders. Of course I did not try neem juice as enema. I tried both neem juice and enema separately but anything which makes you light heals you.
I can say constant practice of discrimination means constantly your thoughts being aware of where it is moving, of where it is being integrated, of where it is moving, makes you move towards liberation.
“Viveka nimnam kaivalya” the discerning wisdom makes you incline towards the kaivalya – liberation. Patanjali is using all beautiful technical terms because he is ending the sutras. He is a great poet. Traditionally when you end any poem you use very beautiful, graceful technical words like Viveka, kaivalya! Again this sutra is continuation of yesterday’s sutra. As I was explaining yesterday about discrimination constantly discriminating – how your energy is moving, how your energy is flowing. If I have to tell you practically look at how your every thought is moving. Someone as I said you always want to be in a giddy mood. Whole day you don’t want in one thought continuously. You want to get away in few minutes. I have seen one of my teacher during my polytechnic days. He will work on a lathe machine. Such a funny thing. he will be gazing somewhere and thinking something! He will finish and create the object precisely till the end! He will even do the threading so perfectly! But if you ask him what he was thinking, he will say about his house, wife, etc. he had a mutton shop. He will come late to class and all the hen’s feathers and goat’s hair will be on his shirt. He will come and do the lathe work. Those days 3 types of lathe they will teach – lathe work with wood, lathe work with MS steal, lathe work with might steal. In hard steal you make the shafts and might steal the threading. Even in those days he is my great disciple ☺ when I saw him I used to wonder can human beings be like this? that was the first time in my life I learnt you can be lost somewhere and do something. First time I learnt this lesson. This is the idea that you can be lost somewhere and do something I never even had and to do threading is not a joke. You will have to work very carefully. I asked him how he is able to manage. He gave the example of In Mahabharatha – one butcher his profession is making and selling the meat. The story says one yogi came to his house ..it is a long story. Vyadha was supposed to be a great Paramahamsa. Even though his body is killing animals and selling meat, his consciousness was always in eternal bliss and enlightened state. He said that!
I went and asked Raghupati Yogi – how come this guy is working in the lathe. He said a Paramahamsa and a fool are 2 extremes both can do a job perfectly when the mind is wandering. He is such an extreme ignorant fool he does not want to be aware of what he is doing. See in Vyadha’s case Paramahamsa every time he cuts the animal, he is completely aware how the consciousness leaves, takes another body. this body, pain is just superficial I can say this experience itself may have lead him to enlightenment. I want to tell you all even though I am a staunch vegetarian and never promote animals killing, I must tell I had the opportunity of reading Vivekananda’s notes and diaries. I was in the publication dept of the Belur mutt. The translation was happening. There was a rule there that all translations from a particular language must be bought to English and translated. Some of them translated from Bengali to Hindi. To avoid that all translations from all over the world you will be shocked Vivekananda’s literature is translated in more than 100 languages all over the world. So I had the fortune of reading some of these books. There is one part which is not translated and published. His conversation about Durga Puja. In Bengal during Durga Puja time, the animal sacrifice is done. There are like 3 posts - the bhandari – means the organizer, pujari – means the person does the puja, tantradhari means the person who chants mantras. So before the puja starts, bhandari and pujari ask Vivekananda if they should do animal sacrifice. He says yes, you should do such extreme sacrifice that the blood should flow into the Ganges and it should become red! Anyhow, they started organizing for that. But the moment Sharada Devi who was in Jayaram Bhati her birth place the information reaches her and she immediately sends message that no animal sacrifice should be allowed in our Belur mutt, we don’t have the ritual. If you want, go get some goat meat from Dakshineshwar temple but no sacrifice inside the Belur mutt campus.
So since she is sangha janani, Vivekananda withdrew and the sacrifice did not happen. Even now in Dakshnineshwar temple everyday they do this sacrifice and offer it to kali. I was wondering why Vivekananda will ask for animal sacrifice a man of his stature and compassion. Actually the conversation was 4recorded by a disciple – Sadananda and 2, 3 other disciples who recorded this conversation. There was a foot note in his own hand writing. He says when an animal sacrifice is done, if you are there with intense awareness the fear of death disappears! Don’t be a pseudo soft soft Vaishnava. Vivekananda is against vaishnavas. He is a great Shakta – Devi worshipper. Vaishnavites were soft. He says see the animal sacrifice you will be out of fear and you will be out of the idea of death. Anyhow unfortunately this whole portion was not translated as the mutt passed a rule not to translate or publish this conversation.
After this I got very curious because in my village Arunachala my family deity Seetala Mariamman temple they will do animal sacrifice outside. I was dead against it and I spoke to the pujaris so many times to stop it. I am from a vegetarian house not only you can eat, you cannot even talk about non veg. my Grand father was such an orthodox guy. But after reading this I decided I should go and see. I went to Dakshineshwar. Usually on Saturdays, it the day auspicious for mother. On that day they give lot of goats in sacrifice. So I was sitting in the front hall continuously watching the goat sacrifice. Maybe the first 3-4 I could not tolerate. It was suffocating so painful. They will actually use a ‘V’ shaped wooden stick kind of thing. They will place the goat’s head on that V shaped part of the stick. Then in one cut, the head will go separate, the body will be separate. The head will be jumping and the body will be stuck in the V shaped wood. The goat’s legs will try to remove the body from it. The blood will be oozing. But after 4,5 goats, I saw very clearly the life leaving the body and it is settling. Suddenly, I realized all pain is just your association with bio memory. Nothing else. The moment the goat stops associating with the bio memory the pain is not there. See first few seconds the goat still has a hangover that it may be able to get back to its bio memory. There were some resigned goats also. Those goats heads was rolling and they were not even jumping! The head just rolls. That’s all. I realized pain is nothing but your attachment to you bio memory. Then I went again next Saturday to see. I can say the end of that day the very idea of fear and pain has disappeared. I realized the knife that falls there it falls on me it is the same. That flesh and this flesh is one and the same!
When the consciousness understands it cannot hold anymore, it moves on. Same thing with my body also. When this neck rolls, this consciousness will be there few minutes and goes on after that. That’s all. I had 2 fortunate things – one tremendous trust on Vivekananda, 2nd the direct face to face experience. Maybe you guys can also go to some temple and watch this. I tell you again by the time the 2nd Saturday ended, I lost all fear about death and pain and all that. Vyadha when he was cutting he was in that awareness, discrimination – Vivekananda says that is why even the cutting goat business has lead him to enlightenment! But my teacher was not Vyadha. He was such a dumb guy! He just became insensitive means moved out of the scene. He just goes on doing but does not even bother. He is the only guy whom I have seen in my life who works with the life whole day and never had even a small mark on his body. I asked him and he said he never cut himself.
I asked my guru, Raghupati Yogi how can this be he claims himself as Vyadha. He said he cannot be. Understand doing the work but not integrated by your thought to your work. By your thought to your work Integrating your thought to your work. I will call integrating your thought to your existence is discrimination. You can give any meaning to existence it could be your work, or the way you exist at this moment. Right now you are a disciple listening to the satsang. If your thought is integrated with that existence of yours, you are integrated. But sitting here if you are in office, in office you are on bed, in bed you are in morning akhaada and there you are here – you are not integrated. Integrating your thought with existence is what I call as discrimination. I can say integrating your thought with your action can also be called as discrimination. It is so difficult to make people follow the spiritual practice because whole day they don’t have discrimination. Today morning we were walking around the temple with some of my ashramites. I told them my whole life I woke up only with this sound right from my young age. Because in the loud speaker they will start Suprabhaatam in Tamil then they will play Shiva Puranam. It was my life. Any day 4 am I will be at the temple. It is not like option. I was wondering how come I was there continuously every day. Why for my disciples it is such a big struggle. I understood the whole day discrimination is missing. What for you exist, what is your life, why should you be alive that contemplation is missing! Really, first thing people should have Viraaaga means a constant clarity that it is useless to be alive. That clarity should come. Only then you will ask why should I be alive. Then your intelligence will be convinced maybe for the sake of enlightenment I should be alive. Then all your thoughts should be integrated with action or actions should be integrated with thoughts. Only then the routine will not be tiring boring work.
Otherwise you see I can tell you I am a big failure as far as my ability to make my disciples do tapas. I am not able to do it. I may claim 1000 things I am an incarnation, this that and all. No. still I am not able to make my disciples do tapas. At the most if somebody attends this 5 hours sadhana – morn 5 to 10. For one month if they do. That’s it. after that it is almost impossible. I am really sometimes surprised. A person like me who can inspire people by words, body language, by life style, by being an ideal – even if I am not making people do Tapasya, then in the whole world where is the tapas is going on? Master’s feet itself is tapobhoomi , the place wehre tapo lakshmi the wealth of tapas lives. But I am a failure in making them do it. I see many times slowly they will come, somewhere in the corner of the Akhada they disappear. What they are doing nobody knows, hide somewhere, then slowly go and lie down in the room. At least I do not want kids to live with these elders. I want at least them to understand every day morning means tapas that is life. How morning you wake up, brush and breathe, like that it is a tapas. Pranayama should be done, yoga should be done like breakfast satsang should be attended to listen to all these great ideas which become part of your life!
Not aligning every thought with your action is the worst crime human beings started doing. Actually if this crime starts all degradation enters into your being.
Sharada Devi says very beautifully if you allow a small rat into your house, for sake of rat you will get cat, for cat you will get a cow to give the cat some milk, then to maintain all these you will get a maid and then to take care of the maid you will marry at the end have to marry her! It is called rat sanyasa ☺ The rat makes you grihastha. It a story from sharada devi. She says if you allow even one thought to move inside your inner space that is enough! For example, one thought why should I get up in the morning, if I don’t get up and to will I not get enlightened or what? Then the next thought builds up why should I get up, brush, drink that neem juice? Then mind says it is okay, you can fall sick to avoid this. Then your mind will say because he wants healthy people around him, he is forcing you. Then it will say I am not interested in living here like a slave anymore. Then you will be ready to fight and leave! That one thought is enough! It is the rat which will eat your cow pin, then you get a cat to deal with the rat, then you will get a cow to deal with the cat, then you will get a maid to deal with the cow, then you will have to take care of that maid and so marry her!☺ Every thought moving towards discrimination directly leads you to enlightenment!
I remember some more things which I read in that huge notebook. Next 2-3 days I will talk about them. as per the Rama Krishna Mission rules they are not supposed to be published. But I am only respecting Vivekananda by telling you how much all these readings have added joy and spiritual richness to my own life. Vivekananda always wanted all Swamis to own a business. You will be shocked he wanted all Swamis to run a professional activity and run a campus independently. He gives the name village welfare to this. he gave some ideas. The swamis should give the things needed like a jute bag to all villagers. Once it becomes a complete object, buy that sell it elsewhere. Make the village auspicious and you also prosper and through this run the campus. This was the original idea of Vivekananda when he wanted to run the multiple campuses. And he says very clearly don’t sit on donations. He wanted every ashram and Swami to have such a project. He was such a visionary. In his time a sadhu working and all was such a crime. In those days if you are a sadhu you are supposed to be eating and…☺ He says very clearly don’t be a load on the society. Bharatn society is already such a poor society. So we should work on these projects.
The first steel plant in Bharat was created by Vivekananda when he had a conversation with Tata. In those days he spoke about the country’s economy. He was a man of practical wisdom and was a great visionary! Unfortunately he died very young at age of 39. Otherwise he would have done too much for Bharat. If he would have lived just 10-15yrs, he would have brought freedom to Bharat and guided independent Bharat. Still his teachings are alive and practicable.
Every moment integrate your thoughts with your actions. Means start doing responsible actions. Not just some mechanical action like my lathe teacher. No. almost it is like you dump your body and it is doing and you are there somewhere! Like how these flower guys, match stick people make match stick. I have seen in SivaKasi in Tamil Nadu making beedi, match stick – for hours they will be working but not aware of what they are doing. Making these crackers, match stick and beedis all these workers just become like a machine. They don’t know what they are doing. Their thought is not integrated to their action. So unfortunate!
Let your thought be integrated to your action. Sit for few minutes doing samyama on this great truth – when every thought you have is integrated to your action, you levitate towards integration. You reach enlightenment. Meditate on this one idea – how you can keep yourself aware, integrate your thoughts with your actions every moment.
Let your Kundalini Shakti be awakened. Let the great discrimination happen in all of you!
