DAY-14-UNCOVER-YOUR-UNCONCIOUS – BAGAVAD GITA
sadashiva samarambham shankaracharya madhyamam asmadacharya paryantam vande guru parampara
I welcome you all with my love and respects.
Let’s enter into today's satsang, today's subject. I will continue expanding 44th verse of Bhagavad Gita - Arjuna Vichada Yoga. Let us listen to the 44th verse in first chapter.
उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन।
नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम।।1.44।।
Utsann-kuldharmanaam manushyaanaam janaardana narke aniyatam vaaso bhavteety-anushushruma
Exactly the signature of unconsciousness. Please understand, signature of unconsciousness will be continuously doing the same mistake. They will not even do new new mistakes. They will be doing exactly same mistakes. Arjuna is opening up and showing the depth of his unconsciousness. Exactly same mistake. He is not even moving one step further.
One employer gave an advertisement, "We need someone responsible for this job." One guy came, “Sir your search ends here. I am the right person for your job.” Employer asked, “Tell me, how are you going to justify? How are you going to support the statement you made?” “Sir, I tell you, your search ends here. In my previous job, whenever something went wrong, everybody said I was responsible.”
Understand, unconsciousness again and again and again makes the same mistake. Does not even do some new mistakes. Here, Arjuna is stuck. He says, “Oh Janardhana! We hear that those who have lost family traditions dwell in hell for an indefinite period of time.” To whom he is talking about hell, I don't understand. Arjuna is talking about hell to Krishna.
Sometimes little bit of devotion takes away a lot of confusion. You can't expect the gopika will talk about hell to Krishna. They will say, “If you are going I'm ready to be in the hell. If you are accompanying, hell is okay.” But, here after using all the justifications, suddenly, Krishna is not bending for anything. I think i can see very clearly the whole scene. Arjuna goes on and on and on but there is no reaction in Krishna's face. Not only he is not responding verbally, he is not opening his mouth. Not he only is not responding verbally or opening his mouth, there's no reaction in his face. He is just there. He is just there. If there is no reaction in opposite’s person's face, naturally you get more frightened.
See, if there's anger or any reaction in opposite person, person’s face at least you know. You can now predict the volcano is going to explode. Something is going to happen. But here there is no expression in Krishna's face.
So, Arjuna is completely shaken. And Arjuna could not understand what to do. So he goes on. He's insisting but he does not have further logic. See, when Arjuna said, “See, the whole community system, caste system will collapse, tumbledown.” Krishna says, “Oh, is it so?” “The whole dynasty will be destroyed.” Krishna says, “Oh, is it so?” “It is sin. All our pitrus will not get the pinda.” Krishan says, “Oh, is it so?”
See if there was a reaction in Krishna's face at least for one statement, “Oh I think what you said is right. Now only I understand,” or “Hey what are you talking? Keep quiet. Don't you understand?” There is no reaction, either this way or that way. So Arjuna is not able to decide whether to talk further, or to talk the same thing, or to come up with some new argument. But every argument looks too foolish.
Ramakrishna used to tell a very beautiful example - A frog one day somehow got one rupee coin. So with that one rupee coin, that fellow started jumping, dancing. One rupee is too much for a frog. So that side one elephant was crossing, the frog started shouting, “Hey, how dare you go through this road and did not salute me? Do you know who am I?” showing that one rupee coin.
How that frog will feel after two three minutes, same way only this fellow’s logic will feel in front of me! It'll jump jump jump and suddenly, suddenly they will realize they are jumping in front of a too big, which is neither interested in cooperating with what you are saying, nor interested in even in rejecting what you are saying!
One guy, very soft type of person, suddenly gets a book, How to Assert Yourself, and reads it completely. Before reaching the house he finished the whole book and wanted to test all the techniques and ideas given in that book, jumps out of the car. Opens the door and screams “Aaaye…” screams at the wife. “Do you know who am I? Ftoday I am a new person. I'm going to do what I want to do. I want best dinner. Go and prepare my bathroom, my toiletry kits. Now I am going to have my dinner and press my feet, give oil massage. I'll go and take bath. When I come back, do you know who is going to decorate me, dress me up?” Throughout this scene the wife was having the face exactly Krishna's. Did not answer. The guy went near the face, wife's face and said, “Do you know who is going to dress me up?” She just said, “Funeral director.” If you did not catch, sit and meditate on it. Do dharana on it. You will catch it.
There's no reaction in Krishna's face. When your kids try to come and argue with you or fight with you, if you just have a plain face, they know something is seriously wrong. And they know what they are trying to do is not going to work. They will just jump jump jump for two three minutes and silently walk out. They will not even expect your answer. They will not even bother your answer.
Here, Arjuna is, ran out of logic and he has nothing new to argue. He has nothing new to tell. But he does not feel he has emptied all his arguments. He does not feel he has convinced Krishna.
उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन।
“O…Janardhana! we hear that those who have left, lost family traditions, dwell in hell for an indefinite period of time!”
The depression of Arjuna, I can say, is almost screaming. So many verse s he is screaming. But Krishna is completely silent. He is there. He is there. He is there!
The first year of the marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. The second year, the woman speaks and the man listens. The third year they both speak and the neighbors listen.
I think Arjuna is speaking, but Arjuna is not seeing any reaction in Krishna's face, that Krishna is listening.
I strongly believe Krishna is not listening to the words of Arjuna. He is only looking into the depths of Arjuna with deep sympathy to understand the root of the problem.
Please understand, when you are agitated, confused, your words do not express your real problem. That is why when people come and tell me their problems, when they give me long letters, more than reading the letter, I will be looking into their eyes. I will read their problems by looking into their eyes, not looking into their letter. Because you are habitual liars. Please understand, all human beings have got into the system of becoming a habitual liars.
Yesterday we were having sessions in Inner Awakening. When you are challenged, when you are cornered, how you escape from situations. I was studying each one’s patterns; how each one escapes, listening to their stories, incidents.
I discovered one thing: ninety-nine percent of the people tell lies and manipulate the situation and escape when they are challenged. And the remaining one percent told lies even to me when I asked them. When you are cornered, when you are challenged, you immediately get into the mode of telling lies to manipulate the situation, to exploit the situation, and escape from the situation.
Understand? More than the words of Arjuna, the eyes of the Arjuna can reveal the real problem to Krishna. More than the letters you bring, what you bring in your eyes will show your real problem to me. That's the reason, usually I look into the eyes, but people feel I'm not attending to them if I read, if I read their eyes, not read their letters. So I just glance the letters also once in a while. But I tell you, I don't believe your letters because you have become habitual liar. Not only you start lying to others, even you don't realize you are lying. You have become such habitual liar, it becomes part of you.
“We hear that those have lost family traditions dwell in hell for an indefinite period of time.” Arjuna is crying! But he is not crying with the right logic. He is just using all broken logics, all broken ideas to justify his thoughts, justify his ideas. See, it is too late! You should have thought about all these things and had a group discussion, round table meeting, dinner, brainstorming, everything, at least two days before! Too late!
A guy was telling his friend, “I never knew what real happiness was until I got married”. The friend says, “Then?” “And then it was too late”. Now it is too late for Arjuna because he has made many decisions based on the things which he does not have, but which he made everybody believe he has.
Let us listen to the next verse, 45th verse in the first chapter of Bhagavad Gita - Arjun Vishada Yoga.
अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्। यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः।।1.45।।
aho bat mahatpaapam kartum vyavasitaa vyam yadrajya sukh lobhen hantum svajanamudyataah 1.45
Wow! Again Arjuna is blurting out ‘svajanamudyataha’. ‘Svajana.’ I can say this verse, this chapter, could have been titled as “Arjun Svajana Yoga”, then the “Arjuna Vishada Yoga”.
“Alas! We are prepared to commit greatly sinful acts of killing our kingsmen, driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness.” What? Krishna wanted real happiness or what? These fellows wanted and Krishna tried his best to bring peace. Now after coming and standing in front of the army, this guy is suddenly saying “svajanamudyataa”.
We are prepared, हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः hantum svajanamudyataaa! “Oh Krishna! We are prepared to kill our own kinsmen, ‘sukhlobhena’, by greed for the kingdom, by greed for pleasure. “svajanamudyataahaah” - the words Arjuna is using.
अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्। यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः।।1.45।।
aho bat mahatpaapam kartum vyavasitaa vyam yadrajya sukh lobhen hantum svajanamudyataah 1.45
Now suddenly Arjuna is realizing, unless he stops, unless he let’s Krishna talk, he is not going to know what Krishna is thinking because there is no expression in the face. He is not able to read the face of Krishna! So he's very clear. He should now look into the, Krishna’s verbal response.
{23:57}
He should stop talking. He should allow Krishna to express what he wants to tell. See, Arjuna is now carrying tremendous fear. He doesn't know how Krishna is going to respond. He can neither go beyond Krishna's words, nor he wants to obey Krishna's words. He just wants somehow Krishna to tell, “All right. I accepted your argument. I understand. I also realized. Arjuna, come on! Let us go back.”
{24:37}
But he's not seeing that kind of response in Krishna's face. Arjuna is looking deeper and deeper into Krishna's eyes, but he is looking in the angle of trying to come to the conclusions which he wants to. He is not doing research as such to find out the truth. He is doing PhD. to prove what he thinks as right.
Understand, research is different. PhD is different. Phd is you write some thesis to prove what you think as right. Research is you do something to find out what is right. Krishna is doing research. He is looking into the eyes of Arjuna. Arjuna is doing PhD. He may get doctorate, not the truth.
I have a story for you guys about PhD. This is PhD resolutions.
Before joining PhD the guy thinks, “I want to win the Nobel Prize. I want to win the turning award.” He jumps.
Then, first year of PhD he thinks, “I want to finish PhD in two years. I want to publish papers only in top tier conferences. I want to make groundbreaking research. I want to win the best PhD thesis award. “
Second year of PhD, “I want to finish PhD in five years. I want a problem. Shall I change my advisor?”
The third year of PhD, “I want a paper. I don't care which conference. Shall I change my topic? I want to be known as Dr. Bonda Bonda. All I want is a doctorate, title Doctor. That's it.”
Fourth year of PhD, “I want to finish PhD somehow. All my industry friends have two children by now. When will I get married?“
The fifth year of PhD, “Why did I come here? Why did I choose this advisor? Why did I choose this topic?”
Sixth year of PhD, “Someone give me a degree! I want to leave this place forever! Let me leave.”
Seventh year of PhD, “People call me ‘Uncle’. She waited, waited, waited and finally married someone else. I don't want any degree. I just want to live peacefully. Leave me!” This is called biography of PhD.
{28:13}
Research is different, PhD is different. Here, Krishna is doing research. He is looking into the Arjuna's eyes. But Arjuna is trying to do PhD. He is giving all his arguments. But now he realizes, no response from Krishna's face. So now he feels only if he shuts, keeps quiet, decides to listen to Krishna, he may even understand what Krishna is really feeling. Even though he is afraid to face Krishna's words, he has to face. It is standing in front of him. Life is standing in front of him. He has to face. He can't escape. He has to look. He has to stare into the eyes of the life. How long you can be either pessimist or optimist? You have to look into the life. Being a pessimist or an optimist is not solution. It cannot lead you to life. It cannot make you experience life. To experience life you need existentialist. Here, Arjuna has to face life.
Let's see the next verse, 46th verse
यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः। धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत्।।1.46।।
yadi maam aprateekaaram ashastram shastra paanayah dhaartaraashtra rane hanyuh tanme khshemataram bhavet 1.46
Finally, Arjuna comes to the last statement, “It would be better if the sons of Dhrutraashtra, armed with weapons, kill me in battle while I am unarmed and am unresisting.” Wow!
Depression is leading to the suicidal tendency. Arjuna is almost in suicidal tendency, suicide mode.
He says, “It would be better if the sons of Dhrutraashtra, armed with weapons, kill me in battle while I am unarmed and unresisting.” I think with this shloka ends Arjuna Vishada Yoga. I'm right? Just one more verse. Let’s listen first what Arjuna says in this 46th verse. Actually, with this verse Arjuna ends speaking. The last verse is Sanjaya. Sanjaya is giving a commentary.
I can say, Gita is the best documentary; very beautifully done: scene, the war scene, and Sanjaya's description. It's an amazing presentation. Sometime I wonder, the skills Vyasa has. You see, he is not just an author. He's like a story writer, director, screenplay writer, ultimately producer. He is almost everything! That is why I say, Vyasa is an extraordinary story teller! Still, still his records are unbroken. Nobody is able to challenge the records created by Vyasa!
(33:29) यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः। धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत्।।1.46।।
yadi maam aprateekaaram ashastram shastra paanayah dhaartaraashtra rane hanyuh tanme khshemataram bhavet 1.46
Finally, Arjuna gives his conclusion. “It would be better if the sons of Dhrutraashtra, armed with weapons, kill me in battle, while i am unarmed and unresisting.” He says very clearly to Krishna, “I am done. I'm not going to fight. Relax.”
Please understand!
The true spirituality is life! For life, facing life. But always people try to use the social rules, smruti, in the name of dharma, to go against life and justify the suicidal tendencies, escaping from life. The cowardness. Here, finally Arjuna declares he is not going to wage the war. He is not going to fight. He could have told this in the first line. But he does not even have the courage to face his decision change. So he goes on trying to justify. The funny thing is, to whom he is justifying?!
{35:29}
He did not even trust Krishna that Krishna can really solve his problem. It is more like, he felt, he has to strongly justify his decisions to Krishna and make Krishna accept his decisions. Convince Krishna. Logic sometimes will not be useful to change others opinions but it can be a good justification for yourself.
To pacify you, to make you think what you are doing, you are doing for right reasons. I always tell, money can't buy happiness but it surely makes misery easier to live with. See, Arjuna is in a big soup, big mess, for making decisions based on the ideas he projected to everybody which he is not. Understand, how much of scrutiny I do in every step when people report to me anything extraordinary, or when they attribute anything extraordinary to me. Not only this materialization or teleportation, any extraordinary things people try to bring it and attribute it to me, I will say, “Okay, is it so? Come on! Let us do some more analysis. Let us do some more research. Let us ensure we stand the scrutiny of the society.” If we are able to prove in front of the naked eyes of the logic, naked eyes of the scientists, then, only then I allow anything to be attributed to me.
{38:03}
Please understand, thorough logical scrutiny about what you are projecting yourself as you to the outer world will save you from any suffering. Paying to the dentist and lawyers up front will always be good. If you are trying to save, do cost cutting, with lawyers and dentists, it will hurt you later on! So understand, same way, when you project something as you to the world, do all the scrutiny before projecting so that the future sufferings are avoided, future disturbances are avoided, future problems are avoided.
{39:09}
Here, finally, Arjuna collapses. That is what exactly happens in this sutra: “It would be better if sons of Dhrutraashtra, armed with weapons, kills me in the battle while I am unarmed and unresisting.” He has gone to the extreme of depression.
He's neither ready to stand, nor ready to listen.
One guy came and told me, “Swamiji, I used to be indecisive in those days. Now i am not sure.”
