“Q: ‘When I came to your energy field, I felt a strong surge of energy…”

Q: ‘When I came to your energy field, I felt a strong surge of energy shot up to my Sahasraara chakra. Is this a sign of enlightenment is near.’

This maybe the sign you are near the person who is enlightened. I don’t know whether your enlightenment itself is near or. First I want you to understand we are always near to enlightenment. We are always near to the enlightenment. That is the important thing. We are always near to the enlightenment. It is a very foolish idea wrong idea to think somebody is closer to enlightenment somebody is far away from enlightenment. There is only two category. Either you are enlightened or not. That’s all. You may be any close.

Even if you are 99.9% enlightened, you are not. Either complete or no. It is like a water becomes steam at the 100th degree. But till 99 degree it is only hot water. Never a steam. Never steam, understand, 100th degree it becomes steam. Either it is steam or water. Even if it is hot water, it can be used to put off the fire, means it is going to carry the quality of water. It may be hot water, but it is going to have the quality of the water.

People ask me then what about the clarity and awareness and growth we feel when we come around you when we practice spiritual practices when we live around you. Understand, enlightenment is not continuity of your self, can never be development of yourself. No. Enlightenment is a quantum leap. It is never continuity. If you are feeling some growth, development, clarity, inner healing, these all ok. Gives you like a, you are on the right track, that’s all. But nothing more than that. When you see a sign board, Los Angeles, 100 miles. It is only a good sign, you are on the right track, that’s all. But it does not mean, you arrived. So this near and distance, this is one of the big problem.

We always want somebody to give us some consoling words. Understand, if you are expecting some consoling words, somebody to come and give you some words, be very clear, people who expect consoling words will be always cheated by teachers. They will miss Masters. They will catch hold of teachers. Teachers will be giving very consoling, very kind of a relaxing words. Understand, it is like a, they supporting you and you supporting them. But Master unfortunately does not need your support. So, he will be straightway telling you the truth. That is where the difficulty will start. There is no such thing as 99.9% enlightened or very close to enlightenment or very near to enlightenment. No. Either you are or you are not.

Understand, sometime, even the spiritual growth, understanding, before enlightenment is accepted and appreciated just for the sake of Dharma not based on the scale of Moksha. You need to understand these two scale. Dharma and Moksha. Dharma is accepted because that keeps the society peaceful. But the lakshya or the ideal is not just the peaceful society. The idea or the aim, goal is to give a new conscious breakthrough to the humanity. Understand, my goal is not just a peaceful society, no. My goal is beyond to give a breakthrough or a quantum leap to the human consciousness. It is time we take quantum leap, because we spent too much time just being human beings.

After the evolution from monkey to human being, the next jump, I think we have delayed too much. It is time we take the quantum leap. So quantum leap in the consciousness is the real goal. Sometime the growth, spiritual growth was accepted acknowledged, respected, just for the sake of keeping peace in the society. When you live and grow in Dharma, you will have more peace inside you and around you. Just for that sake it is accepted, but that is not enough. Maybe for the people, who lost taste in life, who lost taste in excitement, who lost taste in exploring new things, for them what to do, ‘alright, eat, repeat sometime Rama, Krsna, Govinda, lie down, rest. At least don’t disturb others.’ Ok. More or less Dharma. But, that is not the ultimate goal. The goal is exploring in the inner consciousness, continuously doing more and more research and development.

Understand, don’t even bother whether you are growing spiritually or not, just go towards moksha, Dharma will automatically happen in your life. If your goal itself is Dharma, you will never be able to achieve. It is like a if your goal is sky you may be able to jump up to a height of a tree, if your goal itself is only the height of the tree, you will not even move from the ground. Only a person who is excited about moksha, only he who is inspired about seeking, who is passionate about doing research in the inner field, inner space, you will see without any effort Dharma follows him. He doesn’t have to follow Dharma. Dharma will follow him. So, neither bother, nor think are you growing spiritually, are you going near enlightenment, what is your growth.

You don’t have to stop and take record about your past. As long as you are stopping and taking record or accounts about your past, be very clear, still the clear breakthrough has not happened. Clear breakthrough has not happened. When a clear breakthrough, the quantum leap happens, you don’t need, you will not be able to check whether you have grown, how much you have grown, what is your scale, nothing. You will not be able to do anything. Actually, the enlightenment, not only is not a continuity of you. After the quantum leap, you will be a totally different species, different being. Your body may be looking like a human being, but your whole inner space will be totally different. Your way of living will become totally different. So that is the lakshya, that is the goal. Forget about all other small things.

Q: ‘I think of God, Universe as being blissful and nurturing, but the God described in the Satyanarayana pooja is revengeful and punishes people. Why?’

This is a wonderful question. Understand, our Masters created many wonderful techniques for you to connect with the ultimate from the level where you are staying. If you are in the level of Swadishtana, if you are in the level of Swadishtana, means fear, revenge, you will not be able to connect with the God who is all powerful, all compassionate and overflowing ecstasy. You will not be able to connect. You will feel how can that be. Person who is in that level can easily connect to something, do this you will be rewarded. Don’t do that, if you do, you will be punished. More or less like a manual.

Person who is based on Swadishtana chakra, the very low level conscious, very low conscious beings, for them, only manuals will work. You need to present Divine in that level. That is why the stories like Satyanarayana pooja and so many other things have been created like a war, or the demons and Gods fighting, somebody interfering and helping. All these things are described for a person who is in the low level consciousness to feel connected.

Understand, when some of these great things are created as a technique for your conscious evolution, they may not be fact, but they are truth. You need to understand these two word. Fact is what you understand, what you can observe through in the three dimension of length, breadth, depth. Truth is what you can’t understand in the dimension of length, breadth, depth which is beyond in the space and time. These Satyanarayana pooja or the description of God with a revenge and all those things are created even for a very common person who cannot think beyond his moods and swings, his moods and attitudes. He can understand only things which are presented in his moods, his attitude. For that kind of people, these kind of descriptions and stories have been created.

For example, if all buffalos gather and have a meeting, decide to meditate on a God, naturally how they will visualize, a huge golden buffalo with a crown. That is what they can visualize. That is what they can understand. If you tell them, no, no, God is with four hand, a human being, they will ask, why? Why should we worship human God? We have our own brand. We have our own God.’ So, our Master’s say, ‘It’s ok. Alright, let them start with that understanding. Then slowly lead them, saying that it is not only just a gold color buffalo, it has got a strong aura, light around it. Then the third understanding, it is not only having light around it, it is light completely. Then slowly it is beyond the form and formless, pure light. Raising people from their awareness, step by step to the higher level awareness.

One of the great misunderstanding; even misunderstanding is a humble, innocent word. Great misinterpretation and abusal done to our Vedic tradition is that, saying we are worshipping too many Gods, too many things with idiotic misunderstanding, with idiotic misunderstanding. Understand, people ask me here, especially here we face the question. Why so many Gods, I ask them, why so many cars? So many cars because constantly the visionaries of your society visualized more and more better and better luxury and comforts. That is why so many different cars. The visionaries of the societies based on the external world, outer world, they constantly visualized more and more luxury and comfort, so that is why this kind of car, that kind of car, this variety, that variety, with this facility, with that facility, what all.

So many things, but in the East, our Masters, our visionaries, visionaries who created our society is called rishis. Only they are called as rishis. They constantly visualized a different paths for inner bliss. They were constantly visualizing doing research and development in the inner science, in the space of inner development and in the enlightenment science. That is why, just like here, how these guys created different vahanas, so many vehicles, our Masters created same way so many different vehicles for the inner achievement. That is why in Buddhism, the different paths for enlightenment is called as different vehicles. Mahayana, Hinayana, all these things are different vehicles. Because our Masters have done so much of research and development in the inner science, they created so many deities. They are like a, different vehicles to take you to the different space of consciousness, different level of consciousness.

Understand when you don’t understand and if you are ignorant, then at least you should accept ignorance. I saw so many so called foolish scholars, writing books about Hinduism and Vedic tradition. Neither they lived nor had any understanding or even little courtesy to learn things. Maybe when you read that you will understand what is the truth. What is the exact thing, you need to understand about our tradition. Then all these questions will disappear. This question, like ‘why Satyanarayana pooja, God is described with so much of vengeance.’ Understand, it is not that God is carrying vengeance, no. These are different methods and techniques made available to different level people by our great Masters.

Let me try to give you a idea of how our Masters worked. See whenever a person starts getting interested in spirituality or religion or inner space or Bhakti or anything, the moment he starts getting interested in something beyond the outer world. First thing he will start is he will be attracted to too many deities. Whatever Gods and Godesses are there he will start praying. He will just try to work with everybody, try to strike a deal. You take care of ten percent, you take care of ten percent, you take care of ten percent. Ok, perfectly alright. A kind of a exploring attitude. How a child, if you see a child it may have hundred toys but it will not give even one to somebody else. You may say, ‘eh, you have hundred, why don’t you give just two for your brother.’ No, no he will pick up that only and put it in the mouth and not only that if you try to take other things, he will just go and lie down on that. Till that time he will be sitting and playing, but the moment you say I am taking two toys for your brother he will just lie down on that and roll and cry. Roll on that and cry.

Exploring attitude, perfectly alright. Nothing wrong. In the young age, in the schools we have always been made fun by the stories, some stories. These are all consciously made to spread to bring disrespect on the Vedic tradition among the kids. You can understand and interpret any story in any way you want. In any way you want. Anything can be presented in any way you want and when you start exploring, it will be like a, you will work with all deities, whatever deity you see. The more hands, you will feel more power, more energy. Let me tell you, actually, I had one very serious doubt. Why these deities are having so many hands and so many different, different energies, so many different, different weapons.

One great sanyasi, a very great swami. His name was Shantananda. He was living in South Bharat, in Tamil Nadu, I had the fortune to have his darshan and see him. Very pious, humble, a complete sadhu, a full sadhu, a matured, riped sadhu. He had in his temple, he built a temple, actually from him only I learnt putting these huge size moorthies. He had a temple with a 18 handed Devi. I asked him, ‘Swamiji, why these different hands, so many hands, the deities are described, then he laughed and said, that time, by the time we started our mission, and started all the work happening. He laughed and told me, now I saw your souvenir, he saw our introduction booklet and he said, ‘the book says you built hundred ashrams and thousand centers. Now because we have evidence and all these things, Ok. After your lifetime if somebody sees, within this short time you established so many ashrams, so many centers, wrote so many books, all these things. Will they be able to believe you had only two hands? They can’t. A normal logical man will start thinking maybe he was working with too many hands.’

I told him, ‘No, Swamiji, so many of my disciples help me. They all give their hands to me and they are assisting.’ He said, ‘that is the exact thing, they all have become now your hand, same way they all achieved, these deities have done so much in a very short period of time, so we have to make a statement about their power.’ It is like a statement about their power. We say 18 hand means they expressed so much energy when they are in the body. They have done so much of work. That is why so many hands and different weapons are described. These are metaphysical description of the power which expressed through them. That is the exact definition. That is the exact understanding we need to have. It is like they are making a statement so much of work has been done through their energy.

So naturally we will have in the initial level, so many different, actually after hearing to his explanation, I was shocked, yes true, you cannot imagine Shankara did so much in, within 32 years. You will be surprised the whole public life of Vivekananda is only 9 years. 1893, he appeared in Chicago in public and 1902 he passed away, that’s all. Only 9 years of public life. Nobody can imagine. All his books to read and complete you need one lifetime. To read and understand whatever he wrote and spoke in 9 years you need one lifetime. You can’t believe, now naturally we have to think, Vivekananda must have had 10 hands. That is the metaphysical description. It is a metaphysical understanding.

In the initial level you will have connection to so many deities, that is we can say first standard. Then after sometime, slowly the understanding will become mature and you will start thinking maybe the same energy only is blessing in so many forms. It will become a devotion towards one deity. One energy, it can be called as second standard and you will be worshipping one deity.

Then slowly instead of pouring water, putting flower. See pouring water, putting flower, showing fire, everything is actually His, what am I going to do by bringing and putting it on Him. It is like a if the flower is on the tree, it is again it is on the God, on the Divine. Ramana Maharishi, beautifully used to say, ‘eh why are you bringing the flower from broad Purusha and putting it on small Purusha?’ The moorthy is a small Purusha means the Divine and flower is, if the flower is on the tree, on the plant, it is on the broad Purusha, cosmic God. So you will slowly understand, ‘array, everything is His, we are pouring water on the person from whose head all the Ganga is coming, all the water is coming out. And we are putting flowers on the person whose head is Himalayas itself. We are showing fire to the person who is the embodiment of fire itself. What fun we are doing. So you will start understanding. Maybe I don’t have to do all these physical things, I can just mentally start repeating His name and remembering His form.

It will slowly become japa. Understand from many deity worship it will become one deity worship. From one deity worship it will become slowly japa, repetition of name. Maybe this can be called as third standard. Then after sometime, I think even repeating name is not required. If I just can have, hold his wonderful blissful form in my inner space that is enough. Meditation. From japa you move to the Dhyana, meditation. This can be called fourth standard. Then the deep devotion when it ripes you don’t even have to sit and meditate. Just very remembrance puts you in ecstasy. It is called lila dhyana. Ramakrishna says, first teaching of Ramakrishna, ‘if you remember your God or Guru and your eyes become watery, this is the last janma for you.’ Very powerful word. I can say essence of Ramakrishna’s philosophy is that one line, that’s all. Nothing more needs to be added. Just remembrance puts you in ecstasy. It is called lila dhyana. This may be fourth standard, fifth standard, sorry.

First standard is many deity worship, second is one deity worship, third is from worship to japa, repetition of name. Fourth is just meditation means visualization of that form. Fifth, just remembrance, not even visualization. Smaranath ananda. Just by smarana, ananda. Just by remembrance, ecstasy. Lila dhyana, they call this as a lila dhyana. Just a simple remembrance, is ecstasy.

Then the next level is the deep devotion towards that one form, maybe Shiva, or Rama or Krsna, that joy, that feeling connection, understand is so powerful, it will naturally automatically bring a living Master into your life. Only if you are in that state of lila dhyana, you will have that click with a living Master. Till then you can never have a click with a living Master. Understand, having direct connection, the right understanding of living Master will happen, only a person who has come up to the level of fifth standard.

When you see a living Master, suddenly the click happens, Oh God, what I was fantasizing and visualizing and enjoying by remembrance is walking on the ground with the human body. What I read in the puranas, Bhagavata and scriptures and enjoying by remembering is walking, is living in the human body on the planet earth. That click when it happens, your Bhakti will become Guru Bhakti. Understand, Daiva Bhakti will become Guru Bhakti. That connection, suddenly you will see exactly the same divine, same God, same energy walking in the planet earth in front of you in the human body. That is why when a living Master happens, if you are already devoted to Shiva, you will see Shiva in him. If you are devoted to Krsna you will see Krsna in him. If you are devoted to Devi, you will see Devi in him. If you are devoted to, if you are devoted to any other Master who left the body, you will see that same Master in him. He is a fulfillment of all your visualizations and expectations and beyond. That is why you will see all those dimensions in him. All those dimensions expressing in the human body. Daiva Bhakti will become Guru Bhakti. This is the sixth standard. Blessed are those who experience the state of Daiva Bhakti transforming into Guru Bhakti.

The devotion to God transforming into the devotion to the Master. Understand it can happen only a person whose being is matured and who has become egoless. Having devotion towards a God, you don’t have to give up your ego, because he is not directly going to be present in the plane where you are staying. Understand, you will never be affected by the in laws who are staying in Bharat. I have seen in Bharat, so much of problem between in laws and daughter in laws and mother in laws. In this country it does not happen, because they come rarely and even if they come they baby sit. So the problem between the mother in law and daughter in law is lot less here, because they are in different plane altogether. That is the same thing, having relationship with the Gods, because they are in different plane.

But in Bharat so much problems, why you know, they all live in same house. They have to share same house, same wealth and same person. Daughter in law wants husband, mother in law wants son, same person. Then problem starts. You need to be egoless to be in Bharat in a joint family. To live with a mother in law in Bharat you have to be egoless, because both are living in same plane. Same way Daiva Bhakti does not need ahankaara tyaaga, ego sacrifice. Many time it is ego fulfilling. But Guru Bhakti needs ego sacrifice, because he has landed in the same plane as you are. He is doing the drama in the same language which you understand. Here competition comes, Guru also wants your ego, and you also want your ego. Both of them wants the same thing. Now the problem starts, it is just like mother wants son and wife wants husband. Same person, poor guy what he will do. What to do, he can’t do anything and drama starts.

Same way with the Guru Bhakti, you also want your ego and Master also wants your ego. Drama starts. That is why, many people stop with Daiva Bhakti and it is more or less safe, non dangerous, non controversial and non-interfering. You can talk for yourself and you can talk for God, both no problem. You can stand in front of photo, ‘Oh, Venkateshwara, I want one crore and I will do this and I will do that. Oh you say you will give it, Ok. Alright. ’ You can talk this side and that side. You can manage both the games safely, even if he tells some other news, some other thing is coming from your deep navel, no, no this is the message from him. You say, ‘no, no, no. I think that is my negativity, relax. Ay, keep quiet. Think always positive. Think positively. God will never say that. Only my negativity is telling all these things.’ You can always manage the game. It is under your control. That is why all the intellectual organizations stop with Daiva Bhakti.

Understand an intellectual always stops with Daiva Bhakti. Strong egoistic man cannot have Guru Bhakti. That is why you will see so many temples in this country, why so less ashrams. 800 temples have been built spending 10 billion dollar in this country. They can build temples they cannot build in front of a living Master. Very difficult. Very difficult. You see having temple is more or less like you having the control of God. That is what is going on in many temples I have seen. They decide on how many abhishekam, when, how many pooja God will have is decided by them. I was shocked. Sometime when I see these temples here, Venkateshwara has to bath, only he has to have half bath, he has to have half archana and that director will be sitting there and telling the priest, ‘finish quickly’ and namanamanamanamanamanama, mantra speed will increase. But with a Master you cannot do this. You cannot do this. That is where the drama starts. That is where the drama starts.

The other day some of our devotees were telling they want to start a temple in a new place and there are local one or two doctors they were saying, ‘no, no, we should be independent.’ Means what? Array be independent in hospital, not in temple. Temple is the place where you need to be completely surrendering. Be independent in hospital, that is perfect place. You have to be independent and intelligent. You are certified for it. But in the temple, be completely surrendering. In the temple, ‘independent’ word is wrong, ‘let us be egoistic’, is the right word. Because you can’t tell that word boldly, they have to utter the word ‘let us be independent’.

Understand even the temples run by enlightened Masters, installed by enlightened Masters, whether some doctor has work or not, the pooja cannot be reduced, it will go on. You cannot tell our priest, ‘ay, finish quickly.’ No. You cannot show your eyes to our priest, ‘ay, finish quickly I have to go here, I have to go there’, no. The manual is prepared by Ramanuja. The man who pays will not decide the tune. The man who pays the piper will not decide the tune with enlightened beings. But when it is just moorthys, the man who pays the piper will decide the tune. Now what to do. That is why, people always stop with this line, Daiva Bhakti. Over.

Very strong, courageous, intelligent, individuals only take the step, the quantum jump from Daiva Bhakti to Guru Bhakti. Next is the ultimate drama, when the Guru Bhakti happens, Guru starts the next job, he turns the whole Bhakti and attention which is given to him, just towards you as a Atma Bhakti. He says, ‘Relax from my form. Un-clutch from my form and go into your very self.’ He turns the Bhakti into Gnana. Guru Bhakti becomes Atma Bhakti. That is the ultimate drama, the last step. Maybe we can say the eight standard. The last class. That, another one problem. Some people will be stuck even in this place, even in this part, they will be stuck with the Guru Bhakti, ‘no, no, no, forget about enlightenment, I want only to be around you.’ That is where the Master’s work becomes very strong. But he will never allow that.

One wonderful incident. Like this one person, too much caught in the form of Ramana Maharishi, goes to Bhagwan, and says ‘Bhagwan, please give me, vibhooti from your hand.’ Everyday morning he will take vibhooti, the holy ash from Ramana Maharishi, only then he will do his activities. First few days, Bhagwan gave, after that he understood, that this fellow has become addicted to the form and it is time to teach lesson and the story says. Very beautiful story. Only a living Master can do this drama. This guy goes and says, ‘Bhagwan, please give me vibhooti.’ He says, ‘Take it, it is there.’

‘No, no, no, I want from your hand.’ Bhagwan just looks into his eyes and says, ‘This hand and that hand is same, take it.’ Story says, the disciple had such a strong shock, shaking, he just sat and fell into meditation and became enlightened. Understand it is not story, it has happened. Such a strong shock, maybe the word looks very simple for you. This hand and that hand is same, take it. It is not an ordinary blessing. It is not an ordinary teaching. The right time, the right matured disciple, he had only one immaturity of being caught in the form, he just turned the whole Guru Bhakti into Atma Bhakti. When the whole Guru Bhakti turns into Atma Bhakti, you become enlightened.

Understand, you start with many devata, many deity worship, first standard. Then it becomes worship of one deity, second standard. Then it becomes instead of worship, japa, repetition of the name, third standard. Then it becomes just meditating, visualizing form, fourth standard. Then it becomes lila dhyana, smaranaath, just smaranaath, remembrance. Not even meditation, that is the fifth standard. Then slowly from there, that Daiva Bhakti becomes Guru Bhakti. That is the sixth standard and that Guru Bhakti directly turned by the Master towards you as Atma Bhakti, that is seventh standard.

Achieving enlightenment is eight standard. Understand our Masters have created enough techniques for all these different standard people. Do not think the first standard level techniques are foolish because you are in third standard. No. They are created for some particular beings. For some particular beings. Approach all standards, all level techniques with deep respect, you will see everything in new light, everything in new light. Whoever does not understand the different standard, and abuse any one standard or any one part of our Vedic tradition are responsible for destroying the science of enlightenment in the planet earth. They will have Brahma hatya dosha, means killing the knowledge of Brahma gnana. Never, ever disrespect. Any standard, you do not know, which one helps whom. We do not know.

Our Masters created techniques for all standard human beings, all standard people. Let everybody be helped from their standard and it is like a step by step, step by step, such wonderful way, they are lead from one by one, one by one, one by one and finally led to the ultimate experience enlightenment itself. So it is like different vehicles. The societies based on the outer world created different levels of comforts, vehicles, things in the outer world. The societies based on inner world, the rishis created different techniques for enlightenment, different deities, moorthies, techniques for enlightenment. That is all is the basic truth.

Q: ‘What does it mean to dream of deities, the dream of being in their physical presence or of being them physically. Sometimes I dream of being Durga.’

Wonderful. Understand, dreaming the deities means they have gone into your deeper swapna, unconscious level. So it is good, that your whole system is getting cleaned. It is like a cleaning your unconscious level. I have seen in Bharat, they will clean the septic tanks. They will put a pump and the pump will suck and clean everything and throw away, same way having the dream of divine beings or Master or God, is like a the cleaning pump has been already put in your unconscious. Cleaning work is going on. It is going on. It is good.

Q: ‘How to choose a meditation technique from the Shiva Sutras, when one clicks with the several of the techniques.’

Oh, if one clicks with several of the techniques, don’t bother. First technique which clicks for you practice that, that’s all. Shiva has created techniques for all the human beings, happened, happening, yet to happen. He has given the keys for the locks which is yet to be discovered, yet to be created. So sometime, few more keys. And, one more thing, sometimes there are some keys which are Master keys which will open all locks. So you may feel connected with ten keys, nothing wrong. First key with which you feel connected the click, start using that.

Q: ‘In other traditions there are techniques for developing love and it seems as an important focus. For example in Buddhism there are many meditation techniques for increasing love, kindness, etc that can culminate in Bodhisatwa vows. Do the Shiva sutras present such techniques or more importantly is love an important ingredient on this path to enlightenment?’

Now I have to break few things. Love is a very vague, bogus, idiotic concept with which you are cheating yourself. Understand it has no base. Real love when it comes out of you, you will not even be aware you are loving. Others only will be aware you are embodiment of love. Love can never be done with a logical decision. Your mental setup itself should be created in such a way, your actions, your logic itself will be radiating the love which is beyond logic. Shiva sutras is busy, Mahadeva is busy in creating a mental setup with which you will radiate love, without even you knowing that you are radiating love. If you know you are radiating love, be very clear, you will become egoistic. I have seen these so called great service organizations, especially in Bharat. The amount of nonsense they do, God. I can’t imagine. I can’t imagine.

A small story, in one, like this a so called religious missionary, an organization which was supposed to do, social service. The boys are being trained. They are told everyday, you have to do one good act, come back and report. One day 3 boys stood up in the class. Teacher asked, what did you guys do. One boy replied, ‘we helped a old lady to cross the road.’ Teacher asked, ‘for that you don’t need three guys, why three guys. One person is enough’, ‘No, no, sir. It took three people, because she does not want to cross.’

Understand, if you force yourself in the name of service you will do only more danger things than service. And people who are forcing themselves in the name of love without having the mental structure which automatically by nature radiates love, they are the people not only create confusion, it will always be a egoistic strategy planning. It will always be a egoistic strategy planning, never a love. Love is a very bogus empty word used by people to cheat others. Unfortunately sometimes, they cheat themselves also in the name of love. Be very clear, you will have a strange kind of a mental setup. Others will feel you are embodiment of love. Only that is the way love can happen.

Shiva is here busy with creating that mental setup. Not telling you love thyself or love others as you love yourself. No. He knows all these things are foolishness, because he means business. He wants exactly the result. He does not want to have a good name. ‘See Shiva, how great things he is teaching. He is telling all of us to be in love and radiating love. See how great Master he is.’ He is not interested in all these words. He is not interested in, many people talk, ‘have love, show love, be in love, why?’ So that you will go around and tell, see this person how great he is teaching everybody about love. Understand it is a foolish, idiotic, cunning strategy. It is a publicity strategy.

Shiva is not interested in publicity strategy. He is interested in really creating a mental setup with which you will radiate love. That is why he never talks about love. He just makes you loving. That’s all. He just makes you loving. How a love will happen you know. When you have overflowing energy, you will radiate love, that’s all. That’s all. When you have overflowing energy, you will have courage to share whatever you have, because you have confidence. You know you will get it. You know how to create, whether it is energy, time, talent or treasure. Only when you are overflowing you will share. Because you have confidence you can create it again, you can have it again. Or you are very clear I think this is enough for me. You have a clarity.

Understand, clarity and overflowing energy are two ingredients if you put both inside you, you will have love coming out by itself like a beautiful smell. If you try to create love like opening the petals of the flower, it will be ugly. If a flower opens its petals by itself it is flowering. If it is done by hand, it is artificial. Understand, Shiva is too busy here, making you as a natural, loving beings. He is not interested in telling you to show love. That is the reason he is touching you from different angle, different level or different perspective.

He says wherever your mind is attracted, just meditate on that object. You may say, ‘no, no, Swamiji, my mind goes to all dirty things. Don’t bother, do not give the title dirtiness. Just beautifully meditate with a very deep sacred feeling. Anything can become sacred when you are respectful and feeling connected. Understand, the lust will become love the moment you add sanctity and respect to it. Very simple thing add little respect to the other person, to the spouse. Suddenly it will take a dimension of love. It will be so beautiful. It will be such an ecstasy. You will see what is love. Whenever, you think the object towards you are getting attended, attracted is an object it will always be mundane, lust, possessiveness, greed. If that, if sanctity feeling of sacred is added towards, to that relationship, if the respect is brought to that object or to that person, suddenly you will see the love has turned into, the lust has turned into love. The passion has become compassion. The being has started experiencing different feeling.

Here Mahadeva is not interested in changing the object, changing the object is a wonderful way of cheating yourself. I have seen people. They will run away from the home, they will give up everything and go to Himalayas. They will get attached to the tree, the shadow which they are sitting every day. I have seen sadhus fighting for their small kamandalu and the place in front of the temple. For begging they will sit in front of the temple. They would have left their home, their house, their village, their life in the name of renunciation, sanyasa, tyaga, sacrifice. After coming here, by and by, slowly they will get attached to the place where they are sitting. They will not even move from the place where they are sitting. They will come back to the same place. And, even if somebody tells them to move, they will get angry. Understand, if it was just changing the object. I have seen one sadhu, very funny.

That guy was a Ph.D. He has done a Ph.D, but somehow, some renunciation, he renounced everything and went to Himalayas, he had only one possession his kamandalu, the water pot for his washing and drinking and cooking, everything. He became so attached to it. Everyday, ten times he will wash that. It should be shining, always. He became so attached to it. When somebody stole that kamandalu, he started crying profusely. I was there in that spot. And another one sadhu came and said, ‘don’t bother baba, we will get you one kamandalu, same kind’, and he brought one kamandalu. He said, ‘no, my kamandalu has to come back.’ Like a child. There is so much of memories associated with it, like a child. Array, you are supposed to drop even from the memories, forget about the objects which are associated to memories.

Changing the object is never a solution. Changing the attitude is the solution. Here Mahadeva is not saying change the object, just change the attitude. Make a list of things whatever, with whatever you are attached or greedy. If you are greedy about some particular pleasure or a particular object, make a list. If you are possessive of some person, make a list. If you are lustful towards somebody, make a list. Make a list of all the things which creates greed, lust possessiveness in you. Just sit and meditate. Bring respect towards the object, towards the person. With lust, you will make even person into object. With love, with respect you will make even object into person, object into being. Promote them, elevate them, to the level of being. Suddenly you will see the lust has disappeared and transformed into love. The passion has become compassion. The being has started experiencing different state.

Mahadeva says, at this very point, experience. Very powerful method. The next technique also. This technique is like changing the attitude and the next technique going beyond attitude and object, both. In the next session, we will work on the, we will enter into the next technique, understand. Then we will enter into the meditation. Now the essence of this technique, I will explain in few lines. Make a list of all the things which creates, greed, lust, possessiveness in you and sit and meditate, visualize. Bring respect to all the objects and the persons and beings. Suddenly you will see the lust would have become love. Possessiveness would have become respect and passion would have become compassion and the real love and bliss will start overflowing in you just by attitude change. At that very point, experience the truth. Experience the life. Experience the bliss.

SS \#79 - Death- The Greatest Teacher

Q: ’Somebody is asking for the conscious extension technique you recommend that we practice in the ashram. When is the best time to come and practice in the shrine room.’

Maybe you can ask in the energy darshan, I can give you some suggestion.

Q: ‘I often encountered near out of body experience, but I am always so fearful, that it is preventing my astral body to freely experience anything. How should I overcome my fear? Is my out of body experience going to help me because enlightened, to me become enlightened like yourself?’

Out of body experiences are powerful glimpse. Your unconscious will be convinced about the possibility of something existing beyond your body. It is a great glimpse and it will open a great possibility. No doubt about it. Feeling connected, or falling in tune with the out of body experiences, not feeling disturbed by them will happen by meditation technique. Out of body experience is something like a, if it happens like accident. Technique if you practice, it will happen step by step properly, you will not have any shock or disturbance.

Q: ‘I have always wanted to have a Guru in life. Today when I heard that there are 7 or 8 standards. I know that I have not even entered the school. Tell me what should I do?’

Enroll, that’s all. You are only saying you have not even entered the school and you are asking me what should I do. Enroll and the enrollment counter is there in the front, in the other hall. That’s why I have so many deities. Start. Start going around and doing namaskaar to all of them. You will see sometime, you may be even be able to finish all the eight standards in few weeks. There is no need for that you have to go through so many years. No. Sometime even in few weeks you will start getting promoted in few days.

Q: ‘How do you recognize one deity and its many incarnations. For example, Rama, Narasimha and Buddha were all incarnations of Vishnu. I have even heard Jesus was in Vishnu. Why not Shiva? Is it just their energy and path?’

See any one deity, ideal which attracts you is your path, take up that. It is again like a click. Can’t be done intellectually. It is just a click.

Q: ‘I am tickled by the naked truth you put in front of people. How can you have experience of all aspect of life without going through it physically.‘

God.

Q: ‘Does this have to do with incarnation beyond this life?’

This is one of the usual question I face always. Understand, the person who is living in the same building, he may switch on and off the same switch, hundred times a day. But he will not know the circuit. The person who knows the circuit he may not even have operated the switch once in the life, but he knows complete information, about the whole circuit. Understand enlightened person is the person who knows the circuit of the whole mind. I don’t have to go through all the experiences your mind goes through. Because I know the circuit, I know exactly which switch will work for which light, which switch will do for which instrument. So I don’t have to operate and see. Just by the knowledge of the circuit, whole thing is available. Sometime, even if you are living in this room and operating the switch hundred times, you will forget or you may not even be aware, what you are doing. That is the way normal man’s life happens. With enlightenment, you don’t even have to operate, you know the whole circuit. I know the whole mind, how it works. I don’t have to live with an in law to find out how she behaves or how he behaves. I know how mind works, that is more than enough. I will be able to tell. Fortunately I am saved. God saves few people to tell others.

Q: ‘When someone gets MTech, he is called Master of Technology and some University awards him this degree. Who and where one gets the degree of Paramahamsa.‘

This is a very funny thing. A Master who initiates, the Guru gives the title of Paramahamsa. The Guru decides whether the disciple is a Swami or a Paramahamsa. Actually these are the titles, these all have a kind of a meaning behind everything. The Paramahamsa means the person who had the first experience before his physical maturity. He is the Paramahamsa. So only the Guru who initiates knows. With Guru you have to completely open up and tell your life from the beginning and not only that, just by the power of his enlightenment, his spiritual depth, the Guru will know.

So Guru is the person who certifies. Here is the person who had the divine experience or the beyond body experience before even feeling the body physically, before even physical maturity. It is like a each one of these titles have a meaning. If you listen during the ritual, they will recite my name like a Baa, Baa, black sheep rhymes. It is a huge name. Paramahamsa Parivarajaka Acharya Satchitananda Pranava Swaroopa, like that. These are all one, one title.

Paramahamsa means the person who had the first experience or the enlightenment experience before the physical maturity. Parivarajaka means the person who has wandered, who has travelled to all the four main kshetras, chaturmoksha puris, the four main chardhaam we call. Not the chardhaam which is in Himalayas, the Dwaraka, Puri, Rameshwaram and Joshimath. These four Puri, four places, who has travelled all these four place by walk, he is called Parivarajaka. Acharya means the person who understood, who can beautifully transmit the knowledge of Bhagavad Gita, Brahmasutra, Upanishads, the Prastanatraya to others. He is called acharya. Like that each title has a description and you have to go through that process and complete it to have the title. Guru is the person who gives that title to you.

Q: ‘Wow, it says, personal question.‘

Very beautiful experience. I will not read the name, but I will read the experience. She says she is an American woman who found me on You tube in July of this year and she says she cried when she saw, saw you on the computer and I cried in your presence in Orlando Florida. I have also felt the same connection with Nandi and I had a dream of Nandi appearing in front of me as it is in your temple and .. had some strong spiritual experience. So she is asking some explanation. The explanation I can give you during the energy darshan.

Only one question, all of you can also be helped. She is asking is it possible to achieve enlightenment through this beautiful presence too.

Sure, Master or Nandi both can lead you to ultimate experience. No doubt about it. Nandi is great enlightened being. Nandi is supposed to be the Paramacharya of the Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy. The whole South Bharatn Shaiva Siddhanta claims Nandi as the ParamaGuru as the Paramacharya.

Q. ‘Yes this is again a personal question.’

Q: ‘Somebody saying, my mala broke and I lost the medallion with your picture on it, what should I do.’

Get another one, that’s all. Just be practical.

Q: ‘Next question is a personal question. You can ask in the energy darshan. I can tell you about it.’

Let us enter into the next sutra.

Focus on fire, rising through your form, from the toes up until the body burns to ashes, but not you.

This is again one of my favorite technique, because one of my predecessor, Ramana Maharishi became enlightened through this technique. Let me describe Ramana Maharishi’s experience in his own words. Then you can understand this technique. He says around the age of 16, suddenly one day, very strong feeling or the fear of death started happening in him. 16 year old boy, fear of death means, first thing what we would have done, ‘Ay call doctor, we would have shouted 911, this that everything. Of course, fortunately in Bharat, no 911 and nothing can be called and he was not even bothered or perturbed. He did not even bother about calling or telling the family or relatives who were there in the same house.

He was in Madurai at that time. Just he stretched his body, straight and decided to go through the experience. Just lied down like a dead body and started seeing, what is going on inside. Understand, a very courageous decision, very courageous decision. He says beautifully, I saw very clearly I was dying, step by step, slowly the body died. Suddenly, I remembered, yes, only body is dead. I am alive. I exist, still. I am there and he says in the experience he saw very clearly, as if his body being carried, burnt, reduced to ashes, everything happened. In few kshana. In few second everything happened. But suddenly he says something opened, clicked. Yes body has disappeared, I died, it is burnt, everything is over, but I exist. I exist. I am not dead. This was such a strong experience, Bhagwan says, once for all the death fear left me.

The fear of death has left me and that experience, ‘I exist stayed forever. Once for all.’ Understand in half an hour you can become enlightened. That is what Bhagwan is saying, by expressing this. All it takes is half an hour. Logical mind, an ordinary mind, very difficult for the mind to understand. How can just one simple experience give so much of clarity and courage and experience and transform the whole life. He says within that, after that experience happened, within few days he left the house, all alone, and travelled and came and settled in Arunachala and never left the Arunachala after that. Maybe Ramana Maharishi would have practiced this technique for many janmas, before that birth. Whatever he practiced, that experience only just automatically opened up, opened up and pulled him inside and gave the truth. Let me, repeat the sutra and we will try to understand.

Focus on fire rising through your form from the toes up until the body burns to ashes but not you.

It is a very, I can say practically, all mystical tradition in the planet earth use this technique, including Chrisitianity and Sufism. Even in Christianity they use this technique. In many Catholic monasteries and nunneries, they use this technique. I read the other day one of the esoteric Christian groups, spiritual groups not the social groups, spiritual group who are fully engaged in transforming them and enlightenment signs. They say that their nuns, everyday they will lie down inside the coffin before sleeping for two hours, of course open coffin not closed. They will lie down and meditate that they are dead. In Sufism they dig a pit and lie down in that and meditate.

Of course in Vedanta, this is one of the, I can say that most used technique in Vedanta for enlightenment is this death meditation. Katopanishad describes this technique wonderfully, most used technique in Vedanta. Everybody before taking sanyas has to go through this technique, has to go through this technique and in Buddhism any body who is initiated into sanyas, first thing he has to do is he has to go and sit in the graveyard for three months and see continuously dead bodies being burnt and visualize that he is also being burnt. If you have that much courage, it is good. You can go and sit in graveyard and see the dead bodies being burnt everyday. Of course, unfortunately, here in this country you can’t see. It is all electrical. In Bharat you can see it is open burning, natural process. They will arrange the wood and put the body and burn. I have seen. I myself personally had this experience in Varanasi. Let me describe this sutra then I will add my personal experience.

Focus on fire, rising through your form, from the toes, up until the body burns to ashes but not you.

Mahadeva says, visualize the fire rising out of your body, slowly, step by step, step by step. Let your form be burnt. He is saying beautifully, let your form be burnt. Let your body turn into ashes, but not you. Let me describe exactly, what happened with me, when I had experience with this technique. I always used to think I should have the experience of death or face death directly, face to face, but somehow that thought never became a priority.

See, any thought has to become a priority, only then experience can happen. If it is just in corner of one mind like a hundred and work, it should become priority in your laundry list. Not last. It should become priority. Usually in your laundry list, washing, cleaning and cleaning the house and paying the rent and phone bill. If time permits, enlightenment also. If time permits meditation also, that’s all. But here that way, things will not work. Only when it becomes top priority, when urge becomes urgent, things starts transforming in you. Otherwise, it is ok, but nothing much can be done.

One small story, one guy goes to the doctor and says, doctor I tried to commit suicide by taking thousand aspirins. Doctor asked, ‘what happened?’

He says, ‘no, no, after two I felt better I stopped.’ So, you may feel better after two aspirins if it is in your laundry list. But only if it is in top priority experience can be achieved.

So, it was not in my top priority, somehow it was getting postponed. When I went to Varanasi, Varanasi is the holy city for Hindus. Largest floating populated city, floating population. 300,000 people per day enter and go out. Such huge floating population per day average. That is the amazing thing and per day 300 people are burnt in one place. 300 dead bodies are burnt in one place. Manickarniga Ghat, they call it Manickarniga Ghat, where traditionally it is believed if you leave the body or if somebody dies in that area or if somebody’s body is burnt in that area, they will be liberated. They will have direct enlightenment. Not only it is traditional belief, Ramakrishna confirms it from his own experience. He says that, ‘I saw very clearly, Shiva, Mahadeva himself going near every pyre and taking that soul, un-clutching it from the body mind and liberating. He says I saw it with my own experience. So, you can’t say it is a mythological belief. It is a solid experience.

I had the fortune of going to that Ghat. Understand, traditionally not only it is believed, it is true for the last 2000 years, the fire has never been put off. Whether it rains or shines, flood or whatever it is. They will not bring fire when they come to the Manickarniga Ghat with the dead body. From the pyre the fire will be taken and lit. It is a Akhanda smashaana, means unbroken fire, means day and night bodies will be getting supplied. I saw sometimes they do bunker cot system. Two three bodies at a time, because so much bodies are coming, I don’t know from where people are dying so much. Because, if you sit, half an hour, something like 200 bodies comes, and especially in the evenings, because from around the place whoever dies they will start walking from their place carrying the body. ‘Ram naam satya hai. Ram naam satya hai.’ That is the mantra they will chant and walk.

By the time it becomes evening they will reach the Manickarniga. Totally per day, average 300 bodies are burnt. Only in the evening 200 bodies will be there, because evening only they will all reach the Manickarniga. Whatever is said and done, I cannot describe the experience verbally. Only you have to see there to have that experience. To tell you honestly the fear of death just disappeared. When you see so many bodies, ‘array what is there, like this only I am also going to go. Ok.’ You feel there is so many people giving company. You don’t feel lonely about death. You feel it is like a one more trip. Array, so many people are there. Chalo, it is ok, and this is what is going to happen. See, if you see one body being burnt rarely once in a while, you will have that fear.

There you will see, unimaginable, and no ritual, nothing, they will bring the body, straight they will dip in the Ganga three times. ‘Ram naam satya hai. Ram naam satya hai. Ram naam satya hai’. Over, means Rama’s name is the ultimate truth. Rama’s name is the only eternal truth. Rama’s name is the only eternal truth. They will remember this three times put the body into the water, just bring it out and keep. By the time the pyre will be ready. The wood will be arranged, ready, actually they continuously keep on arranging, even if bodies are not coming, they are keeping on, continuously arranging. I asked them, ‘why, why do you guys arrange continuously.’ ‘You don’t know Swamiji, in half an hour 200 will come.’ They have accounts, as if they know for sure.

And the bodies come and it is arranged. They give like a token based on the entry. The moment the body enters they will give the token and another one funny thing, no relatives stay there and do any ritual. The moment they do that ‘Ram naam satya hai, Ram naam satya hai’, dip three times into the Ganga and throw the body there and go away, that’s all, because the people who are there maintaining, they will take care and you don’t know how long it will take the body which you brought the friend or relative to be put in the fire. It is in the queue system, continuously it is going on. All I did, let me try to sit here and see what goes on, and I sat. Just in half an hour, one hour, the death is no more a strange incident which happens once in a while for some relative or friend. It became like a, ‘Ok. Next,’ that’s all. ‘Next’, that’s all. All size, all gender, all age, all kinds, all color, all community. Anyhow, these guys are seekers, so even they bring the bodies. Even their bodies are brought.

All kinds, when continuously you see this happening, you actually lose respect for death. Now you have too much respect, too much of ideas about it. Array, it is nothing the breath which went inside did not come out, that’s all. And, chalo, the people who are sitting, waiting for the property are enjoying, over. That’s all, what is there and nothing much, neither anything can be done about it, nor anything can be repented. What is there, over, neither you can fast forward, nor you can rewind. Over. And, when I saw that bodies being burnt continuously, initially the little fear which was there disappeared and slowly not only fear, it became interest, I started going near and started helping them, helping them. Then slowly I started thinking, after all this body is also going to become like this. Yes. Over.

When you remember that death is going to happen to you, the respect which you carry for your ego will come down, because whatever you think should not leave you is ego. When you know for sure everything is going to leave you, then the respect for ego, just drastically drops. And especially I am a kind of a too sharp straightforward guy. So straightaway, the respect for ego dropped. Then I decided. After all I am going to die, either I should have a death experience now itself and live without the death fear or die and see, that’s all. But I have to see the death. There was a small Shiva temple in one corner, and a small tower above the temple. I went and sat in that tower so that nobody will disturb me. In one corner I sat, if you see in the biography, souvenir, you will see in the photograph, where I had the first death experience. I sat there. From there I started seeing the dead bodies being burnt.

Still I remember the strong click was when one elderly lady’s body was being burnt, I saw her. She had a big belly. The cloth burnt and the fat which was there in the belly started burning and melting and flowing. Sorry for describing too vividly. I could see very clearly because the cloth got burnt, the body is there and the fat is burning and melting and flowing. Because the fat is flowing the fire is still burning with a full speed. That gave a very strong click into me and I said, ‘Oh, God, yes, same way it is going to burn, and same thing is going to happen to this body also. Let it happen. That click opened up a deep fear of death and that fear when it spread all over the body, when I faced it consciously, I could see very clearly, that fear spreading all over the body.

When the fear met my awareness, hit by awareness, that became death experience. Understand, whenever your fear is suppressed, it stays inside you as a suppressed fear. Whenever it comes out and you are not consciously facing it, it becomes a fear stroke and shakes your whole nervous system and breaks it down. If it is faced consciously, it becomes death experience. The fear, death fear, if you just escape, run away when that fear happens, it becomes death. When you face it consciously, it becomes death experience. Death fear plus subconscious is suppression. Death fear plus unconscious is nervous breakdown. Death fear plus conscious is death experience.

Understand, I have given a clear explanation, clear equation. Death fear plus subconscious is suppression, perversion. Death fear plus unconscious means you don’t suppress, but neither you face. You just get shaken, frightened. Fear stroke, nervous break down. Death fear plus awareness is death experience. I was able to see very clearly the fear which rose when I faced it consciously with awareness became death experience means, I saw clearly the body is dead. It is not moving. Two and half days, no food, no water, no thought, no question. No doubt, body was there.

Only after the experience I realized two and half days passed. It was there. I could see with closed eyes, the body is dead and there is no movement. Suddenly after two and half days that click happened. God, body is dead, but I exist still. I am there. That clarity, that click when it clicked, it became such an intense ecstasy. The fear of death left once for all, and it has become such a deep ecstasy, such a joy. Such bliss and slowly opened the eyes. I was able to move the body. First thing I felt was such a deep ecstasy and gratitude. I went down to the Ganga. It was just few feet, sprinkled little Ganga water, took the Ganga water in the kamandalu, little ash from the pyre, straight went to Vishwanatha and put that ash and did the pooja. That was the first thing, it was such a deep gratitude, I saw Vishwanatha was alive. Understand, because I died, Vishwanatha became alive. Till the day before because I was alive, Vishwanatha was always dead stone. Because I was alive, Vishwanatha was just dead stone. Because I died, Vishwanatha is the Shiva in Varanasi.

The Shiva Linga, I always felt to touch this stone, 300,000 people are coming everyday, what foolishness and one more funny thing, when you can touch the deity by yourself you will lose respect. In South Bharat you can’t touch. In North Bharat you can touch by yourself and the Vishwanatha you can touch and play with yourself, everything and naturally you will feel, what is this, just to touch this stone, people are coming from all the way. I always felt it was a stone, because I was alive. When I died, I saw clearly, he is alive. Only one can be alive, either Him or you. When you see the truth, he will become alive, we will not be anymore alive as we think and the fear of death left once for all. I can say this is one of the very strong experience transformed me, transformed me towards my enlightenment, towards the spiritual ultimate truth.

Mahadeva is giving this technique for all of us to experience the same ultimate truth. Let me now describe the technique exactly. Understand, again to do this technique you should have a loving, caring place where nobody will disturb you. At least for two hours, this technique has to be done at least for two hours, nobody should disturb you. You should be completely relaxed. It is a very powerful technique. Better always to do this technique directly in front of enlightened Masters, enlightened being. Do not do, I am talking about this so that it can be in record for the sake of future people to learn. I am not speaking just for the people who are here. I am speaking so that it will be recorded and for all the Swamis and disciples who are getting spiritual training, for them it will be the lesson.

Let me describe the technique. Visualize the fire raising from your navel. Navel is the place where you constantly carry the fire. Raising from the navel and let it start burning the whole body from toes to head. Step by step, visualize that your whole body is being reduced to ashes. One more important thing, all your memories are stored in the body. If you renounce your body through your mind, you will not have the memories raising in your system. You will suddenly see such a deep space, silent space. When you go through this visualization of your body is being burnt to ashes disappears. It may take two hours for you to visualize intensely and finish. Suddenly you will also have the same click. Yes, body is burnt, it has become ashes, but I exist. I am here. You will experience the subtlest non-dying part of you. That gives you courage, clarity, boldness and bliss. That you don’t die. You are beyond death.

Understand, it may take two hours per day, at least few days of continuous practice. When a Master guides personally, it will be a very strong experience. That is what Shiva says, let the fire rise through your form, means let the form also disappear, not only body, the form also disappear. Let the form disappear. When the form disappears, suddenly you will see beyond the body, mind and forms, something which never dies is there in you. When that click happens, liberation happens. That click is what I call satori, the enlightenment experience.
