“Today’s subject is : see light within…we are entering into the next…”
Today’s subject is : see light within…we are entering into the next sutra, the next aphorism by mahadeva, anandaeshwara…understand yesterday mahadeva, shiva was giving the understanding to work whenever you face pain, whenever you face suffering…now, today he is giving the meditation technique to work whenever you are deeply in love…or you are lost in joy…how to use that situation to achieve enlightenment…shiva is such a great Master, he is giving us the technique to use every situation to give us enlightenment…understand he is giving us techniques for all human beings…human beings who came, gone, who came, who are here, who are yet to come… for all human beings he has given meditation techniques…he is giving techniques to use in all possible situations…that is the greatness of mahadeva …we call him as jagatguru in the shiva ashtotra namavali we call him as jagat guru…jagat guru means who can guide the whole world…who doesn’t say no to anybody…he doesn’t say no, no no…any person, any situation he has got technique to help you towards enlightenment…today he is giving the technique to work … if you are lost in love, if you are lost in joy…using that situation, that mood to experience enlightenment to achieve the super conscious state…paramasthitihi…yesterday he was giving us the technique to use pain or suffering.today he is giving us the technique, the next technique, he is giving us to use when you are in love…when you are in great joy…when you are lost in the tremendous pleasure and joy…let us see the sutra, then we will see the translation and we will try to internalize it by understanding it… daman takshoba sambhuta sokshma nithilaka kritim…bindum shika antay hridaye layante dhyayato layaha I always feel the beauty of these great verses is such you cant translate because the moment you translate you can express only one dimension of these great words…see tese words are such that you can give hundreds of meanings to these words…especially Sanskrit is such a poetic language you can break the words in four five ways and the sutras are written in such an amazing language… Anyway you break you will get new new meaning and sutras from it…new new technique out of it…that is why mahadeva says…there cwas a great master who wrote a commentary on the shiva sutras says…in which level you are there from that level you will understand these sutras… See, traditionally we always believe thaty great knowledge should be given to a qualified person who really seeks for it…who really wants it…even in katopanishad yama says…yama dharma warns nachiketa, his disciple, this knowledge cannot be given to a person who is not sincere…if it is given to a person who is not sincere, the person who is giving his head will burst! He will die! Only after thoroughly checking the sincerity of the disciple this knowledge should be transmitted…this knowledge should be shared… Here mahadeva, anandeshwara is not putting any condition; he is straightaway opening up all the techniques, much more stronger and deeper than katopanishad. You may think then people will not misuse these techniques…The possibility to misuse this knowledge exists…understand just yesterday I was talking to you about those Tibetan Masters, who can pierce the body, penetrate it with a wooden piece, without bleeding…or who can take you beyond the ordinary programming… engraved memories…see this knowledge is very dangerous if it is caught in the wrong hands…just imagine if thgis knowledge is given to a person who wants to enslave people, who is interested in power, it is dangerous, he can misuse it…he can just put you all inside the bell and ( laughs) give suggestions…you will follow only my words…dangerous…this knowledge is such it is like a knife…if it is in the hands of the doctor it will save lives; if it is in the hands of a terrorist it will kill…you can use this knowledge for killing or healing…this knowledge is very dangerous if it is caught in the hands of wrong persons…people who are not matured enough if they receive these great powers, this knowledge, its dangerous for humanity…that is why before the knowledge is transmitted always the disciple is asked to practise basic morality like…love, respecting others, ahimsa, non-violence, satya, truthfulness…all these things are put as a basic requirement so that you wont be a dangerous person once you achieve these great powers; you will not be a danger to humanity …
Mahadeva opens here all the sutras…one important thing you must know…shiva sutras does not have any prerequisite, any morality, no yama, no niyama…menas the moral pre requisites. Patanjali speaks about moral pre requisites…yama n niyama, ahimsa satya ashteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha…he gives so many conditions. Practise this then get all the powers…only then he even talks about techniques to achieve extraordinary powers. Here anandehwara is not talking about any yama or niyama; straight away he is opening up with the technique.
The first sutra is devi’s questions, the moment the devi finished the questions Shiva is answering. Mahadeva is speaking. He is straightaway opening the techniques. Naturally people will think there is danger of this knowledge being misused. The bhasya kara, the commentator writes: no, because the sutras are written in such a way only if you are qualified, if you are pure enough, you will be able to understand.
The level in which, the plane in which, the consciousness in which you are staying only to that extent you will be able to relate with the sutra, only that much you will be able to understand. The same line will give new meaning , new understanding if you grow. Sometimes people will come and tell me: swamiji two years ago I heard your lecture but at that time I didn’t understand much. Somehow I started meditating, now if I hear the same discourses, if I read the same books I understand so much; I feel how did I miss, how I didn’t understand all this those days, that time. I tell them: you understand new things; you understand things in a matured way because you have become matured. If you grow the ability to learn from the same books will also grow. The same lines will teach you new things. The same words will awaken new energies in you because now you are ready. Now you are ready.
The Shiva sutras also, the plane from which you are staying, you will understand in that level. If you start moving to a different plane, if you raise yourself to a different level of consciousness, you will understand suddenly new doors are opening; the same sutra with a new energy.
I always tell people what you listen is not the real thing, how many ideas just clicks, how many gives you the feeling: oh, this is what I was waiting; yes! This is what I should listen; he is just exactly telling what I want to listen. How many times you get the glimpse of satori that click happens in you. That is the real thing. How many times you feel that awakening, ‘yes, this is the thing which I want, this is what I want to listen’. See, whenever you just feel like sitting straight, I have seen sometimes when I speak on some ideas, suddenly the whole group will sit straight; means, the idea is going in, the idea is being digested. Now you need more attention… I think volume is not heard…last row you are not able to hear? Through silence you can teach, that is true…(laughs, audience laughs) but only if you are ready to receive the silence it is possible to teach. Now ok? Mmm!
You will understand from the space where you are staying the same words will suddenly throw new light because you have become a new being. For my words, if you use your dictionary there will always be confusion (smiles). If your consciousness raises, you will use my dictionary for my words. Then new meaning will happen, the new understanding will happen in you; the true understanding which is supposed to happen. I always tell people, I tell them: please meditate, even if you don’t understand the words because the meditation will develop your inner space, it will raise your consciousness. Then one day you will be able to digest, understand realize these words. sometimes you catch the joke, the joke clicks after 2/3 days, after 2-3 days only the joke clicks…
A small story: sardarji joke…they are such a nice people they can laugh at themselves…you see you need intelligence to laugh at yourself, you need arrogance to laugh at others, you need intelligence and innocence to laugh at yourselves; only innocent people can laugh at themselves but arrogant people will be always laughing at others. There was a competition…if you don’t laugh for 100 jokes, you will receive a million dollar. First one guy came; he was able to manage 40 jokes without laughing…five people are sitting and constantly telling jokes; 40 jokes he managed but afterwards he couldn’t do anything he laughed! Lost! Second guy came, managed 60, third guy came, somehow managed 80…one sardarji came, he managed 96, by 97 little smile very slowly started in his face. Wife was sitting in the front row. She was shouting…hey, keep quiet! Close your mouth! Stop! Stop! No smile! No laughter! One million…one million! Out of fear he closed the mouth, somehow managed 98 also, but 99 he was not able to. Started laughing, uproarious laughter and you know how they laugh…full laughter. And he laughed…anyhow lost the game, came down…wife was shouting…what! You managed 99.One more minute…one million dollar! Why did you laugh? He said…no…now only I understood the first joke!( laughter) Understand (smile) you may catch it…the clicking should happen. You may catch after 2/3 days…when you are relaxed. Usually you catch jokes only in bathrooms. Only in bathrooms when you take bath suddenly you will remember and start laughing…because there you are liberated…free! Ignorance also comes out… Clicking, catching! Same way if you meditate these words will suddenly click and create the satori…see… in Zen tradition, Buddhist traditions they have something called koans, Zen koan. They will just give you one word and you are supposed to meditate on it. Just like our mantra, traditional mantra, you are supposed to constantly think about it. They will tell you find out the sound of the one hand clapping. How can sound come out from one hand clapping? And you have to go on contemplating, meditate on it. Suddenly when you are in bathroom, maybe, when you are really relaxed that clicking will happen, that understanding will happen. That is what they call satori…first spiritual experience…going beyond logic…means your logic is tired, you give space for your self, for your being, for your consciousness to overpower you.
Your schools, colleges, your universities, everything teaches you to sharpen your logic. Constantly you try to bring everything under the control of your logic. You see, gathering knowledge means bringing things under your logic, understanding things according to your logic…that is what is gathering…all your degrees, whether it is bachelors, masters or doctorate…anything is nothing but trying to bring that part of knowledge under your logic, that pert of the understanding under your logic. But this so called logical people doesn’t understand an important thing: you can’t bring mind under your logic because logic is one part of your mind! How can the one part of you understand the whole of you? No! See this whole book can understand one page, but one page can’t understand the whole book! Logic is one part of your mind…so your mind can understand logic but logic can never understand mind. that is why this psychiatrist, psychotherapy, anything to do with the mind can never be mastered by logic. That is why in this kind of profession a logical approach will never give a clear-cut solution.
See with that patient you have dealt with in that way you cant use the same technique, same approach with some other patient. No! Generalizing is not possible in the field of mind and helping the mental disorders. Generalizing is possible in the physical disorders but it is not possible in the mental disorders. Generalization is impossible! Because your logic cannot understand your whole mind! One more small story: one guy…big philanthropist…who donates a lot of money went to a social service organization which was running a mental hospital, asylum, lunatic asylum. The caretaker, the doctor, sorry here the caretaker word has got different meaning (laughs naughtily)…here the US slang has got a different meaning for that word…the person who takes care of the hospital, asylum, he was taking the philanthropist around the hospital, and showing. In one room there was a patient…all over the room, in blood he has written: rosy, rosy, rosy, rosy…the doctor said this guy become mad as he fell in love with that girl and he was not able to marry her…and he took the philanthropist to the next cell and he was explaining about all the patients …hoe he became mad, how she became mad and what happened to him and what happened to her and all the stories. In the end they saw one more patient, he also wrote all over his room same way in the blood…rosy, rosy, rosy. The philanthropist asked: this guy also fell in love with her and did not marry her? Was not able to marry her? The doctor said no, he fell in love with her but he got married to her! (laughter) You can’t generalize! You can’t generalize in the field of the mind because logic is only one part. The part can’t understand the whole!
Understand if your logic cannot understand the mind itself then how can it understand consciousness, which is beyond its reach? From the young age you are constantly taught to bring everything under the control of your logic. You are taught to bring everything under that one umbrella-logic. In the eastern tradition you are taught to expand the umbrella so that the whole world can come under it. But in the so called outer science, so called logic-oriented educations, logic oriented education system it teaches you to bring everything under the control of logic so naturally you reduce the world. You do not expand ‘you’, you do not expand your umbrella, you reduce the world to keep it under your umbrella.
The Vedic traditions, the conscious based education system teaches you to expand your umbrella so that you and the whole world can be under it. But the logic based education system teaches to bring the whole world under your umbrella means its trying to make the world small. That is why constantly you analyze, analyze, analyze means creating divisions, divisions, divisions. Any specializations, trying to bring things under your control, under your logic naturally you make it smaller and smaller and smaller. Constantly you are taught to bring things under your control. But the Zen koans do the opposite work; they tire your logic. Your logic will be completely tired and suddenly you will create a space, you will allow the consciousness to open, you will allow the relaxation to happen…that moment only you suddenly realize that click happens.
I always emphasize on meditation because the possibility for the click, the satori, the unclutching is more in meditation. During meditation the possibility for satori, the click, the unclutching will be more. You can’t make, directly you cant do anything for that unclutching to happen. Directly you cant do anything for that click to happen. No! You can only create a space where the possibility is more, that’s all! You can’t do anything for a seed to grow. You can create a space, the possibility so that the chances are more. That’s all! Directly you can’t do anything. You can’t just take the seed and open the plant out. No, you can’t do any operation, no. You cant even open the seed and…forget about opening the seed and seeing…you cant even open the ground again and again and see whether the seed has sprouted or not.
Small story: Three monkeys …somehow they got one mango…if one monkey gets one mango you know what will be the fate of the mango…all three and all three of them are fighting. They want some judge who will really do the fair job of sharing that mango to all these three guys. Somehow they found an enlightened person, they went to that person and asked, Master, please help us to share this mango. And you know how these enlightened guys work. They create more complication. He said: you see this one mango, all three of you can’t enjoy and its really difficult…all three of you, you cant feel fulfilled. See, these guys don’t give immediate solutions. They go for eternal solution. (laughter) and he said please make a small hole on the ground, put this mango, close it and pour water everyday…it will become tree and you can have lot of mangoes and all three of you can enjoy forever. Eternally! These guys never give temporary solutions or immediate solutions. They always go for eternal solutions…but this guy did not tell the time also, the time limit also. The monkeys obeyed. They did the same way…they planted the seed, they planted the mango and now all three of them are taking turns to take care of that plant, to take care of the place. One guy takes care of watering, the other guy takes care of the manure, the third guy is the security. Whole day and night he has to stand there.
So work is going on…one month is over, two months over, six months over the seed did not sprout, there was no plant! Now these three guys started suspecting each other. I think this guy is not doing his job properly. One started telling…I think you are not putting the water properly. No, no you are not putting the manure properly. No no I think you are not taking care of the mango, somebody has stolen it. The third guy said…no, nobody has stolen it. The other two monkeys asked…how? How? Everyday I am opening it and seeing whether it has sprouted or not! I know it is there inside because I am checking. Understand just the water or the manure wont do. You can’t make it happen. You have to create the space and wait. Many times the clicking does not happen because everyday we dig and see whether it has clicked or not. The satori does not happen, the clicking does not happen because of the pressure we create. Just like this monkey. Everyday we try to see…I think still enlightenment did not happen …still satori is not happening…understand whenever you come and ask me Swamiji I am meditating so long and still enlightenment is not happening you are doing the job of the third monkey. You are digging and seeing the mango everyday…(laughs). You can’t make it happen, you can’t do anything aggressively. You can only create the space and wait with a deep passiveness…deep passions and passive waiting after creating the space that is the only thing possible.
These Zen koans are created for that. Even our mantras are created for that. This mantras also when you repeat suddenly it clicks. I tell people repeat this word unclutching’….unclutch…unclutch…even you can use it as a mantra. Of course, if you understand the truth that is more than enough. Even if you don’t understand, try to use that as a mantras. Suddenly you will see that it clicks and you understand the truth behind that one word…the truth behind that unclutching. I always tell people when you get that satori, that clicking you are initiated. That moment only initiation happens; that is what I call by the word ‘initiation’, means the transmission of the lamp has happened… Here Shiva is giving wonderful shloka, wonderful sutra, which can give, which can create the new understanding about the life and death. Because this sutra is directly related to presence and absence. Let me read the translation: Feel an object or person, the presence in front of you means the touch or by seeing through your eyes, feel the presence…the next word says feel it not just seeing… Next step: feel the absence of all other objects but this one… Understand step by step let me give the translation…feeling the presence of an object or a person… second step…feeling the absence of other objects…first feeling the presence of one object or person , second step feeling the absence of all other object and persons except this one… third step…feeling the absence of this one also and centering on yourself…realize…paramasthithihi dhyato layaha…let you disappear into enlightenment…into the state of meditation.
See, Shiva is such a great person, such a great Master, he gives techniques for all kinds of human beings and all kinds of situations. Yesterday the technique is for people who are in pain or suffering today the technique is for people who are in love… (sotto voce…on the way to pain…(laughs). People who are in joy, he is giving technique even for them. Understand that is the greatness of Shiva…Shiva is life positive. He is not telling only for people who renounce the world I will give meditation technique…no! Buddha would’ve told that…Mahavira would’ve said that but Shiva is life positive. He is giving techniques for all kinds of human beings. This technique is for people who are in love with some object or with some person.
Understand I am not saying if you were in love with somebody, if you had experienced some deep love to some object then this technique wont help. If you are now, currently in love with some object or person. Please understand when I say ‘being in love’ I do not mean the legal so called social system, no. You are legally committed or you are supposed to love somebody, no. its like a just two days ago I got a letter from a devotee. That person was telling…Swamiji, ten minutes we wait before you come, that ten minutes looks such a long time. Every second I am just looking at the door but after that I sit for two hours not once I think about looking at the door. What is happening, what happens to me? that ten minute I am not able to wait and that two/ three hours I don’t even know how the time passes…means the number of thoughts is more when you wait…that is why you feel boredom, tired and the number of thoughts are less when you are in the presence means your kshana becomes big. If your kshana becomes big in somebody’s presence or in some object’s presence you are in love with the object or the person. This is the scale…understand this is the scale to measure whether you or in love with the person or object. If you are in love with some person or object this technique is for you. Please try this. This is for you try this.
Just like how I said yesterday if you are having some strong pain or suffering that technique will help you to achieve enlightenment. This technique will help you are deeply in love with some object or some person. If you are not in love with some object or person, no God can help you!( laughs) not only Shiva, nobody can help you.
There is a beautiful story, which happened in the life of a great Master, Ramanuja. Ramanuja was a great-enlightened master. See there were three great acharyas who changed the destiny of Bharat, Bharat. They created…actually if you read this three masters’ lives you will know the spiritual history of Bharat…shankara, ramanuja, madhava…these three great people are called mahacharyas. These three only created the three major philosophies, which are alive in Bharat and these three, are responsible for all the problems and wars also! Means the fight! These three did a great service and in the same way created enough problem…(laughs) when people don’t understand with the right spirit naturally they create conflicts.
Ramanuja, great master in his life beautiful incident happened. One young guy came to him and asked: Master’ please initiate me, teach me bhakti, devotion. Ramanuja asked: have you ever-experienced love? Have you fallen in love with somebody? This guy said: what? No, no, no! I have lived a pure life. I want to learn only about devotion and god; teach me about that. I never did any mistake in my life. Then ramanuja says: I can’t teach you about devotion and love. First go and fall in love with somebody. This guy was not able to understand. He said what are you teaching? I came her thinking I will learn about god and you are telling me to go and fall in love with somebody! Ramanuja says beautifully: if you cant love people in front of your eyes, how can you love somebody who is far away, who is not even seen by you? No, no you cant1 you cant experience that feeling connected unless you experience it first with some object or person who is in front of you. If you are experienced or experiencing the deep feeling…connection; sometimes you may not have that with some person…you may have it with your pet…no, really if you cant love human beings you start loving pet animals, you start loving animals. It’s a substitute. No, really, you can’t possess a human being but you can possess your pet. You can see nobody enjoys him or enjoys the pet. The attention of the pet is not shared by anyone else. See, I am not against taking care of animals. I am all for it. But I am against possessing them. Tying a rope or chain around their neck.
Just imagine if some other beings, some beings from other planets, they come and take you and keep you as a pet and do all you do for your pets…give you food, they give you all the basic needs but they put a chain in your neck and they do everything you do for your pets, will you be happy? Just imagine…and they will take you everyday for morning walk, they will get you a cushion, they will get you a place (plate?) for drinking water and the big difficulty they will take you to the doctor. And just imagine…will you be happy? Then how do you think your pets are happy with you?
See, it’s a poor substitute…when you cant love, loving the living beings, human beings…loving the living human beings is a little costly; you need to open up, you need to take a little risk. He may respond, may not respond as you expect. He may not reciprocate as you want. There is little risk of getting hurt. There is little risk of hearing the word ‘no’ you are afraid to get no in return. The fear of ‘no’ you never open up. Just because of fear of no, you stop opening up. You are frozen. You are completely frozen. The fear of ‘no’ stops the growth in your being. The emotional level you are dead. You are frozen. That is why now you want pets.
Pets cant say ‘no’ because you are giving food and all their basic needs. And they don’t know also how to say no and you have your own interpretation. I heard that there is a separate yoga, even counseling for pets! God! they would have lived such a natural, wonderful life…in our ashram we have many animals…lot of dogs, cats…all of them just running around, roaming around. You will be surprised…snakes, cats, dogs all of them eat from the same plate…same place, stay in the same ambience, they all see each other…see they live around and they are completely relaxed and comfortable. They are never bound or chained; they are not taken to any doctor. No other so-called cares are given except food. Nothing else is done. And they are there. And I was shocked to hear that pets are taken for yoga, some counseling…all I cant understand. Anyhow, hmm? Psychiatrists also? Oh, god! Poor psychiatrists! Anyhow…it’s a poor substitute, it’s a very poor substitute.
And when you cant even open up to that much with a pet, you fall in love with some stone. No, I have seen people really doing that. I have seen in the Himalayas some of these sadhus, they will fall in love with their kamandalu, means the water pot. They will wash that from morning till night…washing, washing, washing, washing, washing…till it loses its shape! They will rub, rub, rub…see, they have dropped everything else but they are not able to drop that one kamandalu. I have seen really. And they will fall in love with some small place. They will not leave that place for anybody else. All they do is sit there and beg, that’s all. But they will reserve that place; nobody else can sit. You fall in love with something…but that is at least much better than not falling in love with anything at all!
The first choice is human beings, the second choice is some pets and the third choice is at least some stone or some thing.ok.
Learn to open up. Learn to relax. When you are in love with something you stop thinking about you. You start thinking about that person or object. The attention is shifted the energy is shifted. Constantly thinking about you creates so much of suffering in you. Just see, you suffer; you feel loneliness, depression when you are constantly thinking about you. Just reduce little bit. Stop the energy flow towards that direction of constantly thinking about you. Find out some thing, which will make you forget about yourself. No drugs! I am not telling you…drugs will make you forget yourself. No! But that is not going to help. That is not going to give you the eternal solution. No! That is not going to give you solution. No! You will become more and more dull. When you are in love with some person or object you may use this technique to achieve enlightenment.
Let me repeat the shloka, the sutra, then we will enter into the translation. Understand the technique more clearly. The beauty is Shiva is the only master who supports, who gives you the technique without judging you. If you go to any…if you go to Buddha and say I am in love with somebody, please teach me how to become enlightened, he cant say anything. If you go to Mahavira he will say, no, stop! Stop all this nonsense, renounce and come here. But Shiva, he is acceptance. He doesn’t judge. He only gives techniques.
Throughout this book there is no single teaching, no teaching, no morality, no words…only techniques, only techniques. He is not saying falling in love is right or wrong. He is just saying that is reality. Now I am here to help you to achieve enlightenment if you are in the reality. That’s all. He is not judging you. Only with a master like Shiva you can open up. See, if you know this guy is going to judge you, you will be able to open up? No! Never! If you are clear this guy will give only solutions you will be able to open up. Here Shiva opens himself. He is not going to judge you, he is not judging you. All these 112 sutras, not a single sutra speaks about yama or niyama. No! that is why this book has never become popular like Patanjali yoga sutras or the gita. Because it is not talking about what you are supposed to do…this is not talking about vidhi and nishedha dos and donts. Human beings are so immature, they can’t think anything other than vidhi, nishedha, dos and donts. They want everything clear-cut. Swamiji, you tell me what I should do and should not do. Don’t tell me to decide on my own and all. When people come to me for problems I tell them please do this meditation that will give you clarity and you can take your own decision. No, no, no! You just tell me what I am supposed to do. They want straightforward, clear-cut dos and don’ts. See, dos and don’ts are beautiful when you have the nearness of the living Master, when you have the presence of the Master. But when you don’t have the Master’s presence what will you do? If you are brought up with the attitude of dos and don’ts you will be paralysed.you will experience conscious paralytic attack. Consciously you will be paralyzed. You will not be able to move on your own when you don’t have the Master’s presence. Shiva is the one and only Master who can liberate disciples…who says: have the torch; move on your own. Who gives the truth, who gives enlightenment without judging; who directly gives techniques. He is not judging, no.
If you go to patanjali and ask: I am in love with somebody …please give me the technique for enlightenment first thing he will start…ahimsa, satya, brahmacharya, aparigraha, ashteya. Let me be very honest, I have not seen a single person who achieved all those things and then came to yoga. No. He says first become a celibate, first become truthful, first become a non-stealing person, first live the simple life, first learn non-violence then come for yoga. If you have learned all these things then why you need yoga? If you know all these things why you need yoga? (laughter) no! But that thing… anything impractical will appeal for human mind.
I tell you…see, the egoistic mind always it appeals if it is impractical, if it is great, if it is a big goal. That is why in the West yoga has become so popular. Yoga has become so popular, it appeals to your ego. You have to do this, you have to do that…the other day somebody came to me and asked: Swamiji, am I ready for practicing celibacy? Please tell me. I told him that you should decide, I wont be able to decide. (laughter) I can decide only for me, only you have to decide for you. Then he asked…don’t you encourage me that I should practice? I said I can encourage you if you are interested in doing that for enlightenment. But I feel your attitude is more interested in the ego fulfillment, like achieving. See, the celibacy if it happens when you travel towards enlightenment, its beautiful. Your whole energy is directed towards enlightenment. But if you try to do it by fighting with you, just to conquer some part of you, which you don’t like, then you will have only stronger and stronger ego, and more and more complications.
Understand, you need to understand this very clearly. I am neither supporting nor speaking against …I am telling you the straight truth. If you are traveling towards enlightenment and if it happens in you because all your energy is directed you don’t have time to do all this nonsense…where is the time to buy some rose and presenting it to somebody and waiting for that person to reply…(laughter) all nonsense, no time! You are too busy. And where is the time to share! If it happens, beautiful because your whole inner space is already occupied with somebody or with some truth, higher consciousness…its beautiful. But you have some problem in sharing your life or not being a celibate in your relationship or anything, you have some problem, some difficulty, so you decide; now I should conquer my emotions. I am feeling, I am disturbed because, just because I have not conquered my emotions. If you decide with the attitude of a kshatriya worrier, you will fall like yishwamitra. Understand…if celibacy happens to you like a vashishta you will achieve enlightenment. It’s the right celibacy. if you work like a vishwamitra, like a conquering mood, the attitude of fight, you will fall like vishwamitra.
See, the vishwamitra story says , the rambha, menaka, urvashi all of them came down and they disturbed him. I don’t think anybody is esending from somewhere above. It is his own suppressions after some time just came out. I don’t think somebody is sitting in heaven and watching you if you are really meditating sincerely and immediately sending some rambha or urvashi or menaka to disturb your meditation. If that happens, I know for sure millions will meditate! ( laughter) millions will meditate! I don’t think somebody is sitting there and sending rambha menaka urvashi, no! This guy’s suppression. He is sitting on a volcano and suppressing, fighting with himself. He is a basically kshtriya, king. He doesn’t know anything except fighting. When he turned towards spirituality he started the same thing, fighting.
Understand the goal maybe the same but the path in which you travel should be very clear. Celibacy may be the right goal but if the decision is made because of wrong reasons, you’ll be failure, you’ll be failure. The decision should be made with the right reason, the right reason. That is why I always tell people: its not for all, it is not for all. The right reason, the right person…only based on that you can prescribe celibacy, you can prescribe renunciation. We need to be very careful before taking these major decisions.
Here, Mahadeva opens the door, he gives you the technique…even if you are in love with some person or an object, he is not straight away prescribing one medicine for all. Maybe in the physical plane it is ok. In the physical plain one medicine, generalization is possible but in the conscious level it is not possible…no. Impossible! It is impossible. somebody asked me: Swamiji, why in Hinduism, in Vedic traditions so many gods, I told him why in your country you have so many varieties of cars? Because we did so much of research and development in that field we have so many varieties. You did so much research and development in this field so you have so many varieties. That’s all!
See, in any field you do research and development you will have variety…you will have customized things. You will have more luxury, more comfort, more better things. That’s all. The countries, which did research, and development in the outer world they developed a lot of comfort and luxury. The countries that did a lot of research in the inner world, they developed a lot of techniques and methods. Here, Shiva is giving you the technique from where you arte standing. There is no single teaspoon feeding in the Vedic system, no! There is no one method. People tell me: Swamiji, a big draw back in our Vedic system, we don’t have one god and one belief system. I said: no that is the main plus point. That is a great achievement.
A single ideology cannot suit every single human being, no. You cant give the same kind of medicine, no. You can’t give same kind of meditation. You need to understand where the person is there and you need to help him from that space. You are standing in the 11th floor and that guy is standing in the first floor and you are shouting: oh, this place is so beautiful! Please come up, come up, come up…but you never tell him where the lift is or where the staircase is. He cant do anything. If you create too much greed, he may try to jump towards and only fall and break the bones. That is what happens to many people when they only feel greedy about the state of enlightenment but not given the right technique.
I always tell people the danger of living around enlightened Master is falling in greed with the state in which he is living. See, when you see some one from day in and day out so joyful, untouched by anything, so ecstatic, you really feel a little jealous. (laughs) an d you really feel…and especially day in and day out, morning till night he is living like a flower. And he is facing much more troubles and problems than us. He has got enough of work so many decision-making and everything. He is living like a flower, you really feel jealous. And especially when you see so many people are being attracted and so many people are respecting, so much of attention he is enjoying, you think…( laughter)
But the big problem…the same greed should come towards the method also; not only just the state, the method also. When you don’t know the method or have enough taste for method and you just have taste and greed for the state you are in danger of trying to jump and breaking the bone.
Here, Shiva is not at all dangling the carrot in front of you, no. He is straight away giving you the technique. If you are in love with somebody, if you are in love with some object please let us start the meditation. That’s what he says. He is not saying you are wrong, you are right, no! He is not judging.
There is a beautiful story from the Mahabharata. See, the Ramayana and Mahabharata is not just stories. They express so many great ideas. It’s like a so many ideas and great truths were described and made as converted into living ideals and put in front presented to us. That is the greatness of those great books. Still now these two books remain as the longest poems on planet earth…still now. More than hundred thousand shlokas…longest poem on the planet Earth.
Mahabharata, there is a beautiful story…duryodana and karna’s wife, both of them are sitting and playing dice. Understand karna is very close to duryodhana, they are very closely connected. The real friendship is described between karna and duryodhana. Actually the karna and duryodhana’s wife both of them are playing. Duryodhana’s wife is sitting, facing the door; karna is sitting opposite to her. Both of them are playing the dice. Suddenly duryodana enters into the room. When she saw the husband coming, she just got up out of the respect. Those days women used to respect men! (laughs) traditionally, in Vedic times, in Bharat men received a lot of respect. She just got up and the game was going on. Actually she was about to lose the game. So karna thought she is trying to run away because she is losing. So he just held her hip, the beautiful jewel that was in her hip, made out of pearls. He held that jewel and pulled her, ‘ay, where are you running?
Understand the situation…the duryodhana is coming, karna doesn’t know duryodana is inside, he just held her hip and pulled the jewellery and the mala broke …all the pearls have fallen, duryodhana entered. Now karna understood that the duryodhana is here. After doing that he understood that duryodhana is here, she also shouted, ay, duryodhana is coming, my husband is coming. See now the situation is such that duryodhana has to very clearly express that he doesn’t suspect, he doesn’t suspect the relationship. He doesn’t have any problem, he doesn’t feel uncomfortable towards the whole scene. He has to assure karna that I don’t feel uncomfortable. What you did, please relax. Because, you know in our tradition, especially touching the hip or pulling the mehkala or the jewel in the hip is too intimate, too intimate. And the next line, vyasa writes beautifully…duryodhana is asking karna…should I pick up the beads or will you pick up?
See, he is not talking about anything else, he is not judging, he is not saying what you did is right or wrong. Even if he says what you did is right karna will feel uncomfortable. He is supporting me because I am his friend. He is just avoiding the subject. He is not saying what you did is right, he is not saying what you did is wrong. No! he is just saying shall I pick up or will you pick up? Shall we do it? Shall we pick up the beads? This is called completely accepting the situation, not only not judging giving the secured feeling to that person you are not judged, please relax. In one word, see, any other word would’ve caused deep feeling of insecurity in the mind of karna or in her mind. But the words of duryodhana are such that it neither created insecurity feeling in karmas mind or in duryodhana’s wife’s mind.
Same way here, when you go to Shiva, he is not judging you, he is not giving you the feeling of insecurity. Straightaway he is saying sit, let us start the work, over! He is not saying you are right. If he says you are right you can always think: I think this guy wants something from me that is why he is supporting me. I have seen people come to me with some problem. If I tell them, yeh, it is wrong, they think no, no, no, why should I go to him, he is condemning me. if I say, its ok, you are right, please relax, they think, no, no, no I think he needs me as his follower, that is why he is not advising me (gentle laughter) that is why he is supporting my ego. Bid difficulty, big difficulty (laughs). You can neither tell this nor tell that.
Here, shiva is neither supporting nor rejecting. He is straightaway working. He says, first feel an object or the person before you. Understand just to see, if you see through two eyes, its enough. But to feel you need to see through all three eyes, third eye also. If you see the kids seeing a rose or a teddy bear, how the kid feels the teddy bear. He doesn’t just see, he feels it. You can see how his eyes become big, big. Almost he feels connected to the teddy bear. He feels completely connected. If you try to take it away, you will see the fun! You will see the drama he creates! He feels that, that toy is just part of him. So you need to feel that close with some object or that person. It will happen only when your third eye opens means only when your logic is absent. You can see when you are in love with somebody, when you are in love with some object, your eyes will be bright when you look at that person. Practically your whole being will be looking thru your eyes, through…your eyes! You will feel it.
First, sit with that person or the object, just feel it. Feel the object or the person through your whole being, through the whole body, through the whole energy. Just feel just become completely lost. Feel only that object or the person. Second thing, important thing: feel the absence of all other objects and persons but this one. I am reading the original sutra, original translation, so that you will understand. Actually this sutra can be translated in so many ways, I really feel sorry for my poor translation because I don’t have more words. This sutra has to be understood from four/five dimensions because this can give you the basic truths of the falling in love with the Master or falling in love with god or deity. This sutra will give you the basic technique, how it helps you towards the enlightenment.
When you deeply feel connected to a Master, when you deeply feel connected to a deity, to a god, to a statue what happens in you, how it leads you into enlightenment is beautifully described in this sutra. Understand, people ask me, Swamiji if I am falling, if I am in love with a girl or a man can this technique help me? it can, it will because whenever you are in love with another person he will look like a god; he will be god for you. Understand…I always tell people, people come and ask me: Swamiji, I feel you are god. I tell them this mood or experience will be there as long as you feel connected or you are in love. As long as you are feeling connected or you are in love.
When you are in love with somebody, not only with me with the Master, with anybody you are in love, the other person will appear like a god! He will be fulfillment of your being. God means what? Your fulfillment! Your fulfillment is what we call god. What you feel as your fulfillment is your god- ishta deveta. That is your chosen idol/ ideal. When you are in love with the Master he appears as god. He will be god. I always tell people when you are in love with me not only will I appear as god, you will see all miracles which god will do will be happening through me. But when that love or feeling connected goes away, when you don’t have that you will not see any miracle through me. Even if you see you will take it for granted. It is feeling deeply connected or love that gives you the experience; glimpse of god through other and it just gives you inside you.
It’s a big science. First you fall in love with n object or a person. One difficulty is if you fall in love with an object or a person first you need to concentrate, feel him and leave everything else then feel his absence also. When you want to feel his absence you may not agree or co-operate. With a Master he will agree and co-operate to feel his absence and he will put the whole energy, whole devotion on yourself. He will not bind you. That is the greatness of the Master. That is the greatness of falling in love with the Master.
See, when you fall in love with an ordinary object or ordinary person also this technique can help you. But one thing, when you want to move away from his presence he will feel dissatisfied. He will not encourage it. He wants you to be…by now he will be dependent on you. A person who acts as an object for you to fall in love and waits till everything else disappears from you and diverts the same attention and energy towards you and gracefully moves away, lets you experience his absence is Master. He is master.
Master is a person who will not be dependent on you but who will help you to be dependent on him, when time comes he will simply liberate you and put your whole energy on you and say ‘goodbye’ and tell you to experience the ultimate. With ordinary person that step will be a little difficult.
The third step…first step: falling in love, feeling the person, there won’t be a problem. Second step: forgetting all other objects except that person or the object, that also won’t be a problem. But the third step, feeling his absence also and diverting the whole concentrated energy on yourself…dhyayato layaha means merging into meditation itself without an object for meditation. At that spot an ordinary person will not be able to let go. He will create a comfort zone between you and him and encourage you to be in the same comfort zone will not allow you to go beyond him. That is where the problem will start. Of course, when that problem comes let us face that. Because that problem may come it is not that we should not start our steps at all. When it comes let us find the solution, let us start the work. Let us start the great work of working towards the enlightenment.
Three step…feel an object before you. Not just seeing, feeling. Means completely lost. Feel the absence of all other objects and persons but this one. Exclude everything; just be completely lost with that one person or with that one object. Let there not be anything else, exclude. Third step: when you really feel there is no object, suddenly. After some time you feel, oh, god…I was sitting here with Swamiji for three hours and suddenly after the lecture you wake p, you woke up from sleep (gentle laughter) you think, oh, god, there are so many people around me…or suddenly you see, when did you come and sit, you ask the next person and you ask the person where did you come and sit? I did not even notice. If that happens means you have excluded, you have achieved the state of excluding everything else, then you need to go to the third step…now, unclutch from Master also. Feel his presen…his absence also. Then leaving aside the object feeling and the absence feeling, realize. Object feeling means the presence, absence feeling means absence, leaving aside both realize dhyayato layaha…hridhaye layantey dhyayato layaha…means now let you realize let you disappear just in yourself.
This sutra, if it is understood will give you the basic science of devotion, basic science of falling in connection or in deep devotion with the Master or even feeling connected to a deity, to a moorthi. See in Ramakrishna’s case, he was so connected to the kali moorthi, he felt that moorthi was alive. Just now few months ago I went and saw that moorthi and when I saw that it was such a overflowing, such a fulfilled feeling. Just a three feet stone can give enlightenment! See the amazing thing, its not more than three feet moorthi, just a three feet moorthi, black stone, it can give enlightenment. He was so strongly connected. First the feeling of the object happened, then the exclusion, means leaving all other objects that also happened. He used to sit in front of that moorthi for hours… if he starts doing aarti people will start moving away because he wont end. If some people start speaking you don’t know when they will end (laughs) if he starts doing aarti you don’t know when he will end. People will start going away.
Second step also happened. The third step happened when he became enlightened. Third step means feeling the absence means leaving even that happened to him. Only then he became enlightened. Because when Tothapuri came, his guru, enlightened Master came he said I’ll initiate you. Ramakrishna said: yes, you initiate me. Thotapuri said…now concentrate on the ajna. He gave a technique and put your whole energy on yourself. Ramakrishna said no, the moment I close my eyes I see devi, my devi. I feel her presence. Thotapuri says that is nice you have come to the second step, nothing wrong but now you need to go to the third step. Go beyond the form, cut that moorthi. Cut that form! Ramakrishna says, what?! How can I? I cherish this form. Throughout my life I worshipped this form, respected it, felt so deeply connected how can I cut this form? Thotapuri says no, unless you cut you wont experience the next step. Then finally Ramakrishna agrees and he says I visualized my knowledge as the sword and cut the form of Devi means disconnected, disconnected myself, felt the absence ready to divert myself to the my center. You see directly you can’t connect yourself with your center. First you need to use the outer object presence, then absence, then you will be enlightened. Then Ramakrishna says the moment I cut that form, destroyed that form suddenly something opened in me. I am lost in samadhi, enlightenment… that moment he became enlightened.
Understand, feel an object even ordinary relationship, falling in love can raise you to enlightenment. With this one technique: feel the object or the person intensely, exclude everything else, feel the absence of all other objects only that object or that person’s presence, then move away even from that person or the object. Feel the presence, feel the absence suddenly you will see you are centered on you. On your deeper self. On your consciousness. On your very being.
Feel the object before you. Feel the absence of all other objects or persons but this one. Then leaving aside the object feeling, and the absence feeling realize…dhyayanto layaha…let you relax, let you disappear let you merge into the state of meditation or enlightenment.
Try, try this technique. This you can do only with some person or object. So you wont be able to do now. First of all we can’t disclose with whom we are in love or with what object we are in love. It’s such a personal intimate thing. You can do it only alone with your private space, in your private space. Try. If you are in love with an object or the person try this technique first feel the presence of that person, feel the absence of all other objects, then feel the absence of that person also and let you get centered on the eternal bliss. Let you all achieve and radiate eternal bliss, nithyaananda. Thank you.
