“Subject: In this sutra, patanjali explains about our deep craving for…”
Subject: In this sutra, patanjali explains about our deep craving for suffering. Pl understand constantly we crave for suffering for so many reasons. One to get attention from others. Child will fall sick for mothers attention else she is too busy. By and by our unconscious mind understands that by falling sick we can get attention. You not only falling sick for attention from others, but also for gaining attention from your own self. By and by permanently you fall sick that is what is inferiority complex about your health, mental structure, something which you don’t and can never have. You go on giving attention to yourself becos of this one reason. Suffering gives you a heaviness, shape, identity, boundary. Joy always gives you a boundarylessness. Only when the joy permeates your back bone, your bio memory, you become first psychologically light and physically light. As I was telling you this is the science. Under every air pore, there is an air bag which fills the subtlest air force, samaana. When this gets filled, first thing that happens is joy. Even when you physically work out, if you have joyful memories, more air will fill you. Have photos and memories of ppl who create pleasant feeling in you when you work out. Then your samaana will get filled – not he violent memories.
The unconscious hanging, unconscious craving for pain is one of the worst engram which humanity is suffering. Somehow the hypocrycy filled society will always have deep craving for pain. Bharatn society has 2 parts – enlightenment faced part and hypocrisy based part (the social morality is this only) it is like the weapon used when you have no other way to pull you down.
Enlightenment based society, civilization, that part of Bharat worships Krishna. But for enlightenment, you cannot feel attracted to Krishna. This hypocrisy based civilization go on worshipping suffering. The krishnas consciousness such a extraordinary joy. Krishna lived with Gopikas only till the age of 11. Afterwards he was out. But always Krishna is portrayed with gopikas. As if his whole life he spent with them. Becos he is a symbol of joy. He lost ran away from one war and got killed by a hunter with a poison herb. You will never see a photograph or statue of Krishna being killed. Go to any church everywhere you will see Jesus being hanged. With Krishna you cannot see becos he is a symbol of joy. Becos the pain was never painted in his inner space, it was never painted in his biography.
Krishna lived only till the age of 11 with gopikas. And you will be surprised the love affair between radha and Krishna is totally 1 ½ years. The romance was only 1 ½ yrs. But if you see they are shown as eternally together. Wherever Krishna is, radha will be there. But one funny thing, sita was away from Rama for only 6 months. But always Ramayana is painted as if they had a long period of suffering. In 14 years of forest life they had 13 ½ years of great, graceful romantic life. Becos they were living with 7 rishis and only they know that he is an incarnation. He had great fun. Only 6 months chronologically they were separate. But those 6 months are show as 3 kandas – aranya kanda, sundarakanda, yuddha kanda.
Here it was a romance of 1 ½ yrs but shown as eternal. Krishna represents joy and the ability to shed all sufferings. I tell you joy is the only way to wither away your will. You will can never wither away by pain. By more pain your will will become more stronger in you. With pain, it will wither away. It will just be an ecstasy. I tell you my whole wandering was such an ecstasy. Becos the will got withered away. There was no will. Just today morning I was talking about the railway society. It is actually a different world. The vendors, beggars, sadhus and prostitutes. Another group I forgot. The musicians and performers – big community of performers like small magic, group with monkeys, snakes – for all these ppl, train is the home for them. It was such a joy the will got withered away. There was no will. That is why the parivrajaka was possible for me. And there was such a hue and cry by a few fools whether 9 yrs of parivrajaka was done or not.
Parivrajaka happened becos of the joy. The will got withered away. Patanjali gives us an understanding about pain and how to go beyond pain so that the will can wither away. Your will withering away is the highest understanding.
Lets enter into the sutra
Dukkhanu saayi dweshaha.
Vivekananda: aversion is that which dwells on pain
Dwivedi: that which dwells on pain is aversion
Pranavananda:
Satchitananda: aversion is that which follows identification with painful experiences
Purohit: aversion is recoiling from pain
Every sutra I read of patanjali, I understand his extraordinary genius. If I am given a chance, I would give atleast one city name after patanjali.
Patanjali, swaatmarama, gorakhnatha, maschendranatha – they are the predecessors of swaatmarama on whose sutras we are working in the morning – hata yoga process
Kumbaka, antar kumbaka, bahir kumbaka,
The sutra says dukka anusaayi dweshaha.
The word anu saayi is translated by one translator as clinging and another as recoiling. But both make meaning. That is the beauty of Sanskrit.
Whether you cling or recoil, I can translate that word anu saayi as responding. When you have the starting fight, stare, the moment you blink, you are lost. Same way, when you face fear, don’t blink. Don’t respond. Responding is anu saayi.
Dukha is dwelling upon pain or clinging to pain or recoiling to pain. The word is clinging or recoiling. Both make meaning. If you respond you are caught. When it comes to the question of pain, don’t respond. Whenever ppl bring their problems to me if it is out of pain, I just postpone. Nothing else is needs, just postpone it will become alright. Do not try to find solution when suffering is there. Don’t blink. Don’t respond. Any response you give when suffering is there, will be a weapon you lost. You would have created some strong intellectual ideas to come out of suffering. But when the pain is actually in you, don’t use them. You will lose your confidence in the weapon. Not only the pain wont go, you lose the weapon also. The only way to get out of pain is not to blink. Don’t try to solve, recoil, cling or respond. Recoiling or clinging both create trouble. Many times I see how for no reason ppl suffer. I think oh god, what an unconscious foolish mind which attracts suffering for no reason. It is a very funny mental set up. Another worst thing is all your effort will hold. Holding will create more. The word anu saayi is a powerful word. I can say exact meaning of this word is ‘shadow’ shadow is neither clinging, nor recoiling. Science of shadow is it will follow you. If you try to cling or recoil you cant do it.
Surya, sun god has two wifes. One – usha – light – radiance. Another one is chaya – shadow. They are his 2 energies. Usha has positive existence and chaya has negative existence.
Yama dharma, lord of death and lord of suffering, saneeswara both of them are Chayas son. Means they do not have positive existence. They have no existence. They are just a shadow. All you need is don’t blink. Don’t respond. Whatever response you make, you are in trouble.
Shani and Yama both concepts – if you don’t blink, they will become auspicioius to you. The moment you blink, over.
Anu saayi – response to your pain. Hatred or aversion is response to your pain – it can be any response. The moment you respond it is hatred. Whether you want it or don’t want it. Any response you so for pain is suffering. If you want it or not want it both is suffering. Not responding is the best way to handle pain, to handle suffering.
There is one more beautiful sutra, continuity of this sutra. If you understand that also, then we will be able to have the process done.
Swarasha, vahi, abhi thatha rutha abhiniveshaha
Vivekananda: abiding by its own nature ….
Dwivedi:
Pranavananda: the desire to cling to life is inherent both in the ignorant and the learned, this is because the mind retains the memory of death from previous incarnations.
Satchitananda: clinging to life following by its own potency due to past existence
Purohit:
Because your mind records your past death experiences and the pain that happens during those experiences, clinging to life, attachment, the constant search for security happens in you. What is the way then. Atleast once if you go thru the death consciously without creating the pain engram in you, suddenly you will see that you will be released from…
The whole engram will disappear. The whole thing will destroy.
I know one swami who has mastered katopanishad…
Shankara says in Bhaja govindam: nahi nahi rakshathi tukrunj karane – the learning, knowledge, technical information, grammar will not protect you when death comes.
Technical info cannot solve your problem, when the real problem happens. Especially the imp problems like death, marriage. You might have read manuals, 100s of books, might have had 100s of ppl married, might have conducted courses like Dale Carnagie. But when you face – nahi nahi rakshathi tukrunj karane! Technical info is only to inspire you to experience. By itself it will nto protect you. It is like just reading a menu card in a hotel will not satisfy your hunger. Only by ordering and eating will.
Technical satisfaction is idea about attachement, hatred, death. This is technical info. You need to go thru this as an experience atleast once. Means you should stare at pain when it happens to you without responding or trying to solve. Stare, don’t blink. If you blink you lost the game. Second – go thru the death consciously atlesat once. It is like there is a big rope with which small ropes are taken and many cows are tied. Due to some reason the main rope is b urnt. But the foolish cows do not know the main rope is burnt. If they move their b ody they can run away. But if they move their body they will understand. They will escape. Same way, if you go thru death consciously, all the ropes that bind you will disappear. Then even a simple movement will liberate you!
Key of this whole sutra. Solution for this whole thing is not responding. That is what is the key. Anu saayi. When shani or yama happen to you, don’t blink. Just stare. Don’t respond, just be. That is what is anu saayi.
Lets enter into the process instead of wasting time in technical info.
I will work on awakening all the death fear in your thru pranayama and liberate you from it by going thru the process consciously.
You will constantly emphasize on exhalation. Exhale, exhale, exhale. Vaccuum yourself. The kundalini will then suddenly come up to cover up the depression.
