“In the other form of samadhi, the mental function of clutching with the…”
I welcome you all with my love and respects. Few things we need to understand in the eighteenth sutra of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. The last part of the 18th sutra, which I was talking yesterday need to be understood. Let me elaborate.
In the other form of samadhi, the mental function of clutching with the thoughts ceases and only the samskaras that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain. It’s a beautiful sutra. The last part, ‘The samskaras which do not cause any disturbance in the inner space.’ This needs to be understood. I can say this is the result, purpose, why we need to achieve samadhi. Please understand, the biggest question and the problem again and again I’m asked by people, ‘If I reach samadhi, will I become like you? Will I become Swami, leaving everything and come away? What will happen to my business, what will happen to my family? What will happen to my kids?’ It’s a big fear. Samadhi is supposed to be achieved to come out of fear, but we have fear about samadhi.
Ramakrishna very beautifully says, is the architect of modern day Hindusim, very beautifully he says, ‘In Bengal there is a village habit, tradition, They’ll use the mustard seed to drive the ghosts away. If somebody is possessed by ghosts, that person will be brought and they’ll throw the mustard seed to drive the ghosts away. If the mustard seed en, the ghosts, if the ghosts enters inside the mustard seed, what to do?’
Same way, samadhi used to drive away the fears, if the fear enters about samadhi, what to do? This is the, in this course, in this sutra, Patanjali is answering, is beautifully answering, the utility value of samadhi. Please understand, actually if you achieve samadhi, you will not become a swami, or you’ll not miss your business, you’ll not lose all the things. No. Only one thing will be taken away from you. The samskaras, the engrams, which creates disturbance in the inner space will be taken away. That’s all.
Then people ask me, ‘Why did you become swami?’ This is the way it happened, even if, whether I am enlightened or not, whether, even if I have not become enlightened I would have lived only swami life. Because the young age before my enlightenment I took this life. It’s not that I took this after my samadhi. I took the decision of becoming a swami from the young age.
At the age of three I had the connection with this great yogi, at the age of seven, eight, there is the still that picture that we have. In the house, the house, they usually ask the kids, ‘What do you want to become, What do you want to become?’ Each child was telling, ‘I will become a doctor.’ There is a big fantasy in Bharat, doctor. Because doctors get never sued in Bharat. They don’t get sued. No in Bharat we don’t even have that idea doctor getting sued. The other day one doctor was saying to me, ‘No no. Now in Bharat they started.’ No, nothing. It’s point 0001 percent. And that also go to consumer court and the result will come after two hundred years. I don’t know how many years it will take for the judgment. Forget about it. Doctor is the fantasy for the Bharatn kids. So each kids, somebody was telling, ‘I will become a doctor.’ Somebody else was telling, ‘I will become this, I will become that.’
I took a paper and drew a picture of a sannyasi with a long beard and hair with a turban, and I wrote that I will become a swami. Still we have that paper. My mother preserved it. So I did not take this decision after I had the samadhi experience. It was there. So if you have samadhi, what will happen? Patanjali is describing here. This engrams, engraved memories which hurts you, creates disturbance in the inner space, that will disappear, that’s all.
Beautifully Patanjali says, ‘Samskaras that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain.’ Means what actually? After the samadhi, you’ll become a better person, whatever you’re doing now you’ll be more alive, more active, more intense, more stronger. That is what Patanjali means. There is no need to have any fear. Actually in our tradition, first in the, from the birth, the kids are given right reasoning, vicara. Vicara was given, right reasoning was given. Because of the society advanced here in the vedic tradition. Right reasoning was given. By the time they reached the age of seven, please understand, just because of the social set up, the vitarka, right reasoning, was given to the kids. By the time they reached the age of seven, vicara is given, contemplation, gyatri initiation is given. Gyatri diksha is given. They have contemplation now.
Because of the vicara, because of the vitarka and vicara, by the time they are 14, they will have asamprajnata samadhi. They’re expected to have asamprajnata samadhi. From 14 to 21, that’s seven years, they will work and have sam, the next level samadhi. Please understand, it’s a, the whole system, whole setup is so beautiful. The soc, society in which you are brought up, that will give vitarka, and the gyatri initiation, that will give vicara, contemplation. By the time you reach the age of seven, you will, so you’ll reach the age of 14, you will have samprajnata samadhi, the first level samadhi. And by the time you reach the age of 21 you will have asamprajnata samadhi.
After that, the engrams which do not disturb you your inner space, that remains. It’s not that you’ll become completely dead or empty. No. Beautifully Patanjali says, he gives you the assurance, ‘Don’t worry. Don’t think everything will be lost.’ Sometime people have weird ideas. They come and tell me, ‘Swamiji, before enlightenment everything is forgotten. Will I forget everything? If I become enlightened, if I have samadhi experience?’ No. It will not. It’s not that you’ll forget. Actually, your emotional attachment with that memory, the fear or greed which you feel when those engrams comes in front of you, that will disappear. That will disappear. That is the essence of samadhi. When samadhi happens in you, the samskaras which creates disturbance disappears in your inner space. The samskaras, the engrams that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain.
Virama pratyaya bhyasa purvah samskara seso nyah. So your regular life will go on. You don’t need to change your lifestyle. By giving this assurance, Patanjali says samadhi is the basic quality for any human being to live. The whole vedic tradi, civilization was built on this one concept samadhi. Working for samadhi, achieving samadhi is the first priority. That’s what we call the period as bramacharya. The first 25 years they put this as a priority. Achieve samadhi. Then do anything you want. Then, do anything you want.
By the time you reach seven, you will have vitarka, mental set up, right reasoning. Seven, you’ll be given vicara, gayatri initation. By fourteen you should have samprajnata samadhi, first samadhi. By 21 you should have asamprajnata samadhi. So the mental disturbances, the samskaras which cause mental disturbances, will not be there inside you. Just imagine. Without that to happen in your life how much of pain and suffering could have been avoided. How much of pain and suffering may not have been there. Whole life will be different.
But the big problem is, we constantly in our life, what we are doing trial and error, trial and error, trial and error. In that is how whole life goes. Whole life goes just in the trial and error method. We don’t have straight clarity. We don’t live straightaway. If we had samadhi in the young age so much of suffering could have been avoided. The samskaras which cause mental disturbance may not have been there and the life would have been lot more beautiful. Not only in the personal level, the social level and with the whole world. Life would have been lot more sweet. Lot more blissful. Lot more joyful.
Without samadhi naturally what we do? We are trying this and it doesn’t work out. It’s like a yesterday I was telling the story, the bird eating the bitter fruit, when it eats bitter fruit it jumps that side. Then it takes, tastes the sweet fruit, it gets the confident and continues to eat and again it comes upon the bitter fruit and again jump this side. Our whole life has become bitter fruit and sweet fruit journey. This side and that side. And they say. ‘Oh this looks, if the other side looks green.’ They think, ‘Ah lets do that.’ When this side looks green, ‘No no no no, no. Lets do this. It’s amazing.’ He jumps this side to that side, here there, here there, here there. What we do? We don’t know at all.
The whole life becomes jumping from this side to that side. I have a story about that. When a pipe burst in a doctors house he was forced to call the plumber. The plumber came over, fiddled around for a half an hour, and presented the doctor with a bill for six hundred dollars. Six hundred dollars for half an hours work! This is ridiculous. Even I don’t make that much as a doctor,’ Doctor said. The plumber replied, ‘Neither did I when I was a doctor.’ Understand, if you’re a doctor you want to be a plumber. Constantly we are looking this side and that side. That becomes our life.
Now the next question, important question, is samadhi that easy? Now the big problem is if I say easy I don’t know whether you’ll believe or not. I have to logically say it is easy because straight away me saying it’s easy is not going to work. Logically I have to say, I have to prove it is easy. Only then you’ll even think, ‘It may be easy.’ Or is, ‘What you’ll tell on and on, for him it may be easy who knows.’ There are two kinds of people. People with darka. ‘For him it is easy. He was born in that atmosphere, brought up in that atmosphere, he was, he is an incarnation.’ You can have any reason. If you are with kutarka, ‘Who knows whether he himself experienced. He goes on saying it is easy.’ With darka you have this problem. ‘Oh it may be easy for him because he was born and brought up in that kind of a lifestyle, that kind of place.’ With kutarka, this problem, ‘Who knows whether he has experienced or not.’ A big problem is when I say easy, sometime people really think, ‘I think he has not studied completely. He has to go back and study little more. Because it is not that easy. We never heard things are that easy.’
Please understand, if it is not easy, it is not relevant. If it is not relevant I won’t spend my time on that. I’m really intelligent guy. I don’t have to be spending my time on something which is not going to be easy. Which is not going to be useful for you. See if I know for sure it is difficult then naturally I’ll decide, ‘Oh why to speak on this book. Let’s skip it. Lets pick up on something else.’ Or I don’t even have to speak on any book. I can just sit and chat with you. And I have enough to chat with you. I have enough of thing to chat with you. I can just go on telling, ‘Oh this happened, that happened, I went there I went here and spend one’ …to talk two hours nothing much is required.
And people don’t remember more than five minutes what I spoke. No that is another one thing. If I repeat this, if I prepare five minutes material and repeat that again and again and again and again for two hours, nobody will think that I am talking the same thing. That’s the truth actually. Because in the modern day especially, you don’t remember anything more than five minutes. And your attention also doesn’t stay more than five minutes in one, in something. Even though physically you may be sitting here, it’ll be lost somewhere. Then again after five minutes if I start, you will not remember at all. Maybe if I talk ten times, two times you’d have caught, ‘And I think Swamiji repeated twice.’
Understand, Ramakrishna very beautifully puts it. He says, ‘First samadhi, then world. First samadhi.’ He says very beautifully, ‘Apply oil in your hand before you open the jack fruit.’ Because the jack fruit should not stick in your hand, apply oil first in the hand before you open the jack fruit. Apply samadhi in your inner space before you enter into the disturbing world. Integrating, centering. There’s one more example he gives, if you pour the milk into the water it’ll mix. But if you boil it and make it as a churned butter out of it, make curd and churn butter out of it, if you put the butter into the water it won’t mix. Same way, make your being into butter through samadhi. After that it won’t mix with the world water. Water which is world. It won’t get diluted into the worldly things.
Putting the samadhi first, that is a priority. I always tell people. If you are below thirty, male especially, do not miss, take one year off. It is worthy. I tell you. And I am responsible for what I am talking. It’s not that I am going to disappear. I am going to be on the planet earth for quite a long time. If it is not worthy, come and hold me. I am responsible. Take one year off. Spend your time working on samadhi. Reading intensely, meditating intensely, work intensely on it. I always tell, especially in Bharat, I tell these boys. If they are below thirty I tell them, ‘Take one year off, travel length and breadth of Bharat, to all the temples, different maths, different traditions, travel, study one year. It’s worthy. After all you are going to live at least seventy-eight years, average is seventy-eight years. One year is worthy. Spend completely, keeping this as a first priority, second priority and third priority.’ 20:45 Not just as priority. That’s one of the best way to escape from things. They keep that as a first priority but always the practicality second practicality, first practicality. The moment you have second priality be very clear; you will not be intense, you’ll not be intense. Keeping this as everything. One year. I always tell people, ‘Below thirty, if you’re male, take up this pilgrimage of one year. If you’re female wherever you are staying, spend one year completely just for this.’
Whether you reach asamprajnata samadhi or 21:00 nivela samamdhi or samprajnata samadhi, it’s not a problem. Any one samadi, if you experience once, that’s enough. Now you are ready. As Patanjali says, ‘The samskaras that do not cause any disturbance, only that remains. Only that will be in your inner space.’
If you’re above sixty it is mandatory. Take one year off. It is time. You don’t know when the call will come. You may not even have the time to pack up that time. And especially Bharatns. Bharatns above sixty and in this country especially. See. 400 times they are more prone to heart attacks. I’m, whatever I am talking is statistics. If you’re Bharatn above sixty, take one year off. It’s worthy. If it is not worthy, you can catch me, I’m responsible. It’s not that I’m a restless guy and about to disappear somewhere, and I know this whole thing is going to go to You Tube. And all the junky questions will come. All kinds of questions. I know. I am talking responsibly. I’m, I stand for what I am talking. One year. Spend one year intensely reading, studying the spiritual material, contemplating and meditating.
Vitarka, vicara, asmita, and ananda. In that four. Spend one year. You’ll see. Your whole being will be integrated. Whole being will be integrated. Centered. You’ll have a different kind of understanding, style, way, in which you think, live and radiate. You may think one year looks too much. But if you see your life span of sixty years of suffering, one year is worthy to remove that suffering. I can say at least ninety percent of your suffering will be reduced. Your pain body will disappear. See, the pain body is responsible for constantly creating suffering for you and causing suffering for others and attracting suffering towards you. That will disappear. You will not make the major decisions in your life, which enriches your pain body.
I’ve seen in my life and I’ve worked with millions of disciples. I, I tell all the youngsters in Bharat when I see them, when I tell, when I see that they’re really interested in the happy life I tell them, ‘I’m not even asking you to become a swami. Just one year, try this lifestyle.’ And even all the ashramites all over the world I tell them one year live as the sannyas life. You’ll see many of my ashramites, one year they’ll be wearing kavi. I tell them, ‘I’m not going to give you complete sannyas, but this one year just try. Try full time just for this life. And after that, you’ll, I’m not even asking you to live the same life. If you are feeling comfortable, settled that is different. But after that time I’m not even asking you to do that.’
That one year, putting samadhi as the life. Constantly, morning when you get up remember you are getting up to achieve samadhi. When you are breathing you are breathing to experience samadhi. When you are sitting you are sitting for samadhi. When you are lying down you are you decide to fall into samadhi. Just samadhi as the first thing. One year is enough. Your whole mental set up will be new. Your whole being will be new. Your whole energy will be new. And as Patanjali says, ‘Only the samskaras which do not disturb remains.’ Now, only the samskaras which disturbs remain.
You can see in your life constantly we are masters to make worry out of anything. We can make hell out of anything. Nothing much is needed. I have a story about that. An elderly patient went to the doctor. ‘I need help Doctor. Do you remember those voices in my head which I have been complaining for years. Doctor says, ‘Yes.’ This guy says, ‘Well they suddenly stopped.’ Doctor said, ‘That is good so what is the problem?’ This guy says, ‘No I think I am going deaf.’
When sounds are heard you have a problem. When you don’t hear sounds again, you have a problem. You’ll have problem. You can make problem out of anything. You can make problem out of anything. One more thing, when you can make problem out of anything, whatever you do will always be understood as a bad. Even the good things which you do, will end up as bad.
See, what you carry that only will radiate. If you are carrying a mental setup. People come and ask me, ‘Swamiji, instead of taking one year off and doing spiritual practice can I go to some village and serve?’ Please understand. I am not against service. But many time, unless you are established in samadhi the service which you try to do ends up in mess. Really. Ends up in mess. You mess the whole thing. Unless there is a spiritual base, the service which you do ends up either in the name and fame agenda or some nonsense. Instead of serving you create more problem for the people and come back.
I have seen. I have sent many people to villages to serve. They create more problem and come back. They mess up the whole thing. But when I give them the spiritual base and send them then they really. See, when a person has a spiritual base even he doesn’t directly physically serve. His presence inspires so many people and the so much of service happens. So much of service happens. So much gets done. So much is contributed to the civilization, to the society. He becomes an inspiration center. Inspiration center. Otherwise it is just useless. I have seen.
One small story. One scout teacher, he commands the whole class, he says, ‘All of you guys should do one good act and come back and report to me every day.’ Next day three boys stood up and said, ‘Sir, all three of us helped one old lady to cross the road. We made her cross the road.’ Doctor asked. This teacher asked, ‘You don’t need three person to make one elderly lady to cross the road.’ They said, ‘Yes sir. We took three persons because she doesn’t want to cross.’ Many time our service ends up like this only. People may think you are serving. But it ends up only this way. I have one more story about the service.
A blind man was walking along the street with his guide dog. When it suddenly stopped and did what it does with the pillars against his leg, the blind man’s leg. Immediately the blind man felt in his pocket and produced a biscuit and fed it into the dog. The passerby who saw the whole scene was amazed. She asked, ‘In view of what the dog just did to you, that was an incredible act of kindness.’ What the dog did, this fellow instead of doing anything he just took the biscuit and fed the dog. The blind man replies, ‘Nonsense.’ said the blind man, ‘I only did it to find out which end of the dog to kick.’
Understand, you may be giving biscuit, people may be thinking it is a service, but only you know what for you are giving the biscuit. Many time without spiritual base, without samadhi, this is what happens. Without samadhi, when people start serving, this is what happens. Understand, unless you have a spiritual base, service will be, unless the spiritual base is there, always service will be either business or for name and fame or political agenda. It’s never a service. I have seen. I have seen millions of service organizations.
All the calamity in Bharatn villages are caused by this so-called service oriented people. The so-called service organizations. Our villages were so peaceful. So happy. So blissful. These fools entered and created the devil. I know. I know. They entered and created all sorts of complications. The community system was never, the disrespect to other beings. But they projected. Just created. The ideas were created. Projected. And finally it became like, the whole thing is a mess now. Whole thing has become a mess. So, these so-called service institutions are not there to serve. Please understand. Have a strong spiritual base. That is the only way you’ll do real service to society. If it just social and political agenda don’t use the word service. Straight away enter into the social and political field. And fight. But, in the name of service, entering with the social and political agenda ulterior motive is different. Ulterior motive is different. Sometime I’m surprised. How could they use the idea of service to do different things.
Anyhow, unless the samadhi happens in you, you will not be useful for you and for the society. Both. You’ll not be useful for you and you’ll not be useful for society. You’ll not be useful for the world. I tell you, the whole vedic tradition is refining the inner software. Refining the inner software. The whole vedic tradition is nothing but refining the inner software. It is all about creating pakka, pure, foolproof, virus proof, fire walled, inner software. That is the whole vedic tradition. When Patanjali says, ‘Virama pratyaya bhyasa purvan samskara seso nyaha,’ that is what he means. Let you experience the samadhi where the cessation of all the thoughts happens. All the mental function of clutching the thoughts ceases. And only the samskaras that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain.
For example if I have to say. Like a samskara to eat. What is needed for body. Samskara to drink. What is needed for body. Samskara to maintain the body. Samskara engram to breathe. Only those engrams remain. The basic maintenance of your body, your wealth, and maintaining what is needed without causing the inner, without causing any disturbance in the inner space. Understand, that is one of the key point. Even though those samskaras remain you will be doing the same thing. You’ll be having the same house. You’ll be expanding your business. You’ll be creative. More creative. You’ll be more blissful. You’ll be more happy. But no samskaras will cause any disturbance in your inner space. That’s the key.
Just imagine all the wealth, comforts, luxury of the infrastructure of the west and the beautiful, pure, the ecstatic, the inner being of a yogi. I can say that is the best thing, a complete human being. Complete human being. You all have that possibility. Understand. You have the luxury, comforts, infrastructure of the west and mental set-up of the east is after all your choice. If the eastern people decide they need the luxury, comforts, infrastructure of the west, they can’t have. Because it’s not a one choice. The choice is not in front of them. They just can’t wipe their mind, see, they just can’t create the infrastructures just like how you create in the TV or scenes. No.
But the inner infrastructure which Bharatn yogis have, you can create. You don’t need years. You can just wipe your mind and build it up. It is possible. The potentiality is there for you for you all as a new human beings. That is what I call jeevan muktas. When I say jeevan muktas, living enlightenment, not videha muktas, people who have left the body and there in the heaven, or there in the different place, Shambala, or wherever. No. Relax. I don’t want people to become enlightened and leave the body and go there and be in heaven. Live enlightenment. Make this as heaven. Live here. Like Gods.
That is what the next sutra, Patanajali beautifully says, the next sutra is 37:25 aleve beautiful sutra he says, ‘The people who live in this samdhi after the asamprjnata samadhi, they live like a gods on the planet earth. Next sutra is a very powerful sutra. Let me read that sutra for you. Bhava pratyayo, videha prakritilayanam. When people achieve this samadhi which is calling asmprajnata samadhi, peop, after they live like gods on the planet Earth. So the important message which I wanted you to understand through the sutra. Do not have fear about samadhi. I just wanted to remove the fears about samadhi. Different ideas which you carry about samadhi.
He says, ‘When the mental clutching, the clutching to your thoughts,’ I can say, actually when samadhi happens, the emotional connection to the memory disappears. The memory will be there but the disturbances caused by those memory will not be there. It’s like a, as of now, if you look in side your mind it is filled with high resolution pictures. That is why you can’t store more than two, three pictures, if it is high resolution picture. But samadhi what it’s, it does it, it converts everything into a word document. You can store any number. That is why the people who reside in samadhi, they will have a strong memory. They can handle any number of things.
Now you won’t have too much of memory because one photo is enough. You see, high resolution picture means too much of emotional attachment to one picture. When I say emotional attachment I say, I mean fear or greed towards one picture. For example if you remember one person in your mind, too much of fear or greed is there. Means that picture is a high-resolution picture. If there is no fear or greed, just that picture is there, it’s a word document. Easily it can handle. It can handle any number. The more and more emotional memories, emotional attachment to memories, even fear is a kind of an attachment, negative attachment, filled with fear or greed, that kind of memories, that kind of ideas, that kind of samskaras, you will be loaded. Your whole inner space will be possessed, your whole inner space will be suffocating. You can see very clearly, any direction you turn any memory comes up, it suffocates you, it just fills you. And when it fills and suffocates you, naturally what you do you’ll torture that person also. You’ll take revenge of that, revenge. See, when somebody suffocates you, naturally what will you do? You may not do it directly. In the name of taking care you will be possessing that person. Many time the people who claim that they love the other person they give more torture. Your love is so tortuous because you are torture.when you are tortured whatever you do will be torture.
I have seen many people. They say, ‘I love my son, I love my daughter. I love my husband.’ The amount of nagging they do. They amount of possessiveness and the bondage they create. Oh God. Poor guy, he’ll be much better if the love is not there in his life. If this love is not there in his life. Naturally, when you are suffocated what will you do? You will suffocate. That’s the trend. I have a story about that.
A doctor was woken at four o’clock in the morning to make a house call. With great reluctance he got dressed and stepped out in a terrible snowstorm. After examining the patient the doctor told him to send immediately for his lawyer, friends and relatives and to make a will. When doctor got home he told his wife what he had done. Wife asked, ‘Why? Was the man that bad?’ Doctor said, ‘No, I just did not want to be the only one called out on that such filthy night.’
Many time you call everybody. Not because they are needed but because you don’t want to be the only one to be called. Many time your love is nothing but suffocating the other person. Possessing the other person, torturing the other person. That’s a big problem. Your emotional attachment to anything will not do good to you or to that person, that object. Whether it is greed or fear or worry or anything. With samadhi, that disappears. That same person will be there. It’s not that you will not be loving. It’s not that you’ll be indifferent to that person. No. You will not have hangover.
I tell you, not having the hangover about the person, people, place, objects, is the ultimate freedom. That’s the ultimate freedom. Because I am traveling all over the world I am saying, I’m telling you, ‘I’m filled with bliss. I’m able to travel wherever I go. I’m able to travel and I’m completely comfortable, happy, constantly traveling, going, seeing so many people so many places everything. Because I don’t have hangover about the place or the people or objects. There’s no hangover. This tremendous freedom. It’s just tremendous freedom.
Sometime people come and complain to me, ‘Swamiji, it takes three days for me to go to any new place to settle down in any new place.’ They tell me, ‘They go to any new place and it takes three days for me to settle down and start sleeping comfortably. How do you do wherever you go?’ I tell them, ‘Three days! I stay only three days in any place. If I am like you what will happen?’ It’s such big freedom not having any hangover about people. Just before coming to USA, the bramacharya was serving me. He asked me, everyday, seeing day in and day out seeing, seeing, seeing, serving me, he became very attached to me. And, living around me is joy. That fellow asked me very seriously, ‘Swamiji, after going to USA will you forget me? Childish, very child like. I looked into him and asked, ‘You want consolation or honest answer?’ He said, ‘No no no no you just tell honest answer.’ If you want consolation I’ll tell, ‘No no no no I won’t forget you I’ll remember you You’re, I’m always with you, you are always with me all those, I can tell, I know all those words. Or you want an honest answer?’ He told me, ‘No no you tell me honest answer.’ I told him, ‘I won’t even remember you. Forget about forgetting. Only if I remember I have to forget you. I won’t even remember.’
That guy was not able to understand. Only when I tell these things even to all of you I am remembering him. Otherwise no question of remembering. Just to tell I am remembering. That guy is serving me day in and day out. But what to do? I told him when I am with you I am complete. I am completely open. Please understand, when you are with people, we have the fear to open up completely. The fear of rejection. So you have your shield. You are half/half. Half you are with them, half you are protecting. So naturally when you are not physically with them, again hangover. When you are physically present you are not complete. So naturally when you are physically absent you will not be complete. That’ll be hangover. Not having the hangover about the people, places, objects is the ultimate freedom.
You know how the hangover tortures your life. Because constantly you are falling in love with people or places or objects. At least with the objects you can buy it and keep it in your house. With places if you have more money you can buy one home and have, you can travel and see. But constantly you are falling in love with people here and there what to do? Even though constantly you remind, ‘No no no no no no no. You have so many reasons for that nos. I am married. I am from this culture. I am from this background. I should be like this. But you’re constantly falling in love. At least once in fifteen days. Here there, here there, here there. You integrate yourself and 48:00 drag. That is different.
Understand, suddenly just think, if you don’t have that kind of hangover what will be your being. The power and strength of your being. The clarity, energy, joy, ecstasy will radiate. That’s what I call samadhi. Please understand, samadhi is worthy of your one year. It is worthy. Just put little energy into that line. You will see it gives you tremendous freedom, joy, courage, an amazing clarity. As Patanjali says here, you will be filled with an inner space where the mental activity of clutching with the thoughts and objects ceases, it’ll just disappear. There won’t be any clutching. When you are with that person you are complete, you are full, you’ll respond, you’ll not have fear to open up. You’ll not have fear to open up. You’ll not have that fear of rejection. You’ll become completely with that person. When you are not there with that person you’ll be just yourself. There won’t be any hangover. There won’t be any hangover.
I can say with samadhi experience, the whole society’s model’s standard will be high. Without the samadhi only the model’s standard goes down. With samadhi experience the whole model standard will be high. And you don’t even need to teach morality. And you won’t be modeled because of morality. Your morality will be there just because of your overflowing fulfillment. Not having hangover about the place, about the people and objects, I can say you’ll feel so homely with the whole planet Earth. Because I don’t have hangover with one place, I don’t have hangover with the, even with my ashram, the headquarters where I am staying. No hangover. That is why wherever I am going I am completely comfortable. If you have one home in the mind you have only one home. If you have hangover you have one home. If you don’t have that hangover wherever you go is your home.
Still I can’t relate with the word. People talking. It’s like, ‘It feels like a homecoming. It feels like coming back to home.’ I don’t understand, what is it? Wherever I go I am feeling I want, I am at home. That idea, because your hangover you always think only one place is yours. I’ve seen people, they can’t enjoy unless legally that property is theirs. I’ve seen people. They’ll go to some city beach, cities, the beaches, or the hill stations, they’ll go here and there. ‘Oh what. What a scene. What a wonderful scene.’ They can’t relax into it. First thing, ‘Let me buy an apartment here.’ After buying an apartment they’ll be running behind a plumber to fix the water. When they come second time, ‘Oh, the water is not working, the electricity is not working, call this call that.’ That itself the whole three days will go away. And third time they’ll never come there because they’ll too busy buying another one vacation home. People who buy vacation homes in every city will never have time for a vacation.
All you need to do is remove the hangover wherever you go your whole life will feel like vacation. Without removing the hangover even if you go there what will you do? You’ll be lying down and worrying. You’ll be lying down there on the beach and worrying about your home. ‘Who knows what has happened there. Who knows what has happened to him.’ So relax from the hangover. I have seen people, they’ll go to some vacation then they’ll be thinking ‘Oh, my husband has not come, my spouse has not come, my son has not come.’ They’ll be thinking about all the people who are not there. And when they go back to the house and when they’re with the people whom they were missing on the vacation, they’ll be fighting with them. There’ll be a big fight going on. Why they are missing them in the vacation place? Because they don’t have anybody to fight. No really…it’s funny. Not for the people who are living, maybe for me it is funny.
Many time they’re too busy with all these things. Don’t have time to live in joy. Samadhi is the ultimate freedom. It is worthy of your one year. Spending one year working for samadhi is worthy. It is worthy. Otherwise it just constantly, you carry the hangover, or sometime what you’ll do? You just don’t do. What it needs to be done. I have seen, that also, that end, that’s another one end. Doing the 53:33 vidy intiia are two problems. Doing what should not be done and not doing what needs to be done. Both end. Both end happens when you are clutched with emotional memories. Sometime some emotional memories that takes care you don’t do what needs to be done. Even what needs to be done is never done. I have a story about that.
A football fan had a lousy seat at the stadium offering a really bad view. But through his binoculars he spotted an empty seat on the fifty yard line. And so he made his way there. When he got there he asked the man in the next seat whether the seat empty was taken. That guy said, ‘No no no. This is my wife’s seat, she passed away. She was a big Packers fan.’ This guy says, ‘I am terribly sorry to hear of your sad loss. May I ask why you did not give the ticket to a friend or a relative?’ This guy says, ‘No, they are all at the funeral.’
You don’t do what needs to be done. I can say, a person who has achieved samadhi only worthy of living life. Only he’s worthy of living life. I am not saying you are not worthy of living. All I am saying, put a little energy to achieve samadhi. That is worthy of living. That is worthy of living. It takes away so many other, you see actually now whatever I describe, few sufferings, few problems, few tortures. These all the few things which I heard from my disciples I told, but there are millions I never heard from my disciples. Only you know what you are going through. Only, you know what all you are going through.
I have one more story about what people go through. A man consulted his priest about getting a divorce. The priest was surprised. ‘Why on earth would you want to divorce such a lovely wife? She’s soft and gentle any, and if I may say so she’s also quite beautiful. I really can’t see what you have to complain about.’ The man took off his shoe. ‘See this shoe?’ he said, showing it to the priest, ‘The leather is soft and gentle. It’s a beautiful piece of work and nicely proportioned.’ ‘Ah,’ said the priest, the parable. The man replied, ‘In a way Father, I am the only one who knows it pinches.’
Understand, only you know what all pinches and what all the way it pinches. All I can say, whatever I said whatever I describe now are the few things which I heard from my disciples, the problems. I can say, whatever I said now and whatever I’ve not said now, you will be liberated from everything just by one experience of samadhi. As Patanjali says here, ‘Only the samskaras that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain.’ Just see, if suddenly all the senses are taken away from your inner space, what will happen? You may feel that it’s not you. That it’s not you.
Somebody asked me. Actually I asked one disciple, ‘What will happen if all the worry, all the disturbance in your inner space is taken away from you? What will happen?’ He told me, ‘I may have to learn a second language Swamiji.’ That’s what he said, ‘I may have to learn second language Swamiji’ It means even the 58:19 lan…
…actually the other day when I was driving from the Phoenix I was telling, one of my Swami was driving, I just turned and told him, ‘I wish you guys have a body like mine.’ Just smiled and said, ‘What do you mean by this Swamiji?’ Not for pride or ego I’m telling you. I’m telling you the honest truth. When you are in samadhi see, just simple things you are completely content, fulfilled. All I did, I was driving, I was sitting in the front seat and these guys are having some snacks and they gave me little snacks. Put that snacks into my mouth. That’s all. Suddenly I am seeing that body is in samadhi. Means the fulfilled feeling. Overflowing, ecstatic. Little snacks, nothing else. Just few nuts that’s all. And the mind goes into nuts. Not the way in which you understand. I mean it is in samadhi. Sometime I feel such a joy to live with that body, that kind of body. Such a joy to live with this mind, with this body, which is in samadhi. It’s the ultimate luxury. I can tell, any number of lives you can spend to achieve that gift. It’s worthy. Any number of life it is worthy. It is worthy. Only then you will know what is life. Only then you will know what is life.
The life starts after asamprajnata samadhi. As Patanjali says, ‘When the mental function of clutching with the thoughts ceases, and only the samskaras that do not cause any disturbance in the inner space remain.’ It’s like a, please understand. One guy, is great speaker, after his lecture was over he rang up his wife. Wife was asking, ‘How was the lecture?’ This guy said, ‘Which lecture?’ Wife asked, ‘Ah, you gave only one lecture. I’m asking how was that lecture?’ He said, ‘No, three. One which I prepared. One which I gave. One which I was thinking I should have given. Means hangover. When there’s a hangover whole life is a hell. When I walk out and go out I know very clearly I am me. There’s nothing. I never think back or think I should have told this I think I forgot to tell this I should have presented in that way. No. Nothing is there. There is no hangover. There is no hangover. What ecstasy to live with the mind and body which does not have hangover. Only then life starts. Whatever you lived without asmprajnata samadhi can’t be counted as life.
I have a story for you. One more story. One lady appeared before the judge in a divorce action. ‘How old are you?’ asked the judge. She replied, ‘Thirty-five.’ Judge noted her graying hair, wrinkled cheeks, ‘May I see your birth certificate?’ She handed the judge her birth certificate. Judge said, ‘Madam, according to this certificate you are not thirty-five, but fifty.’ She says, ‘Your Honor, the last fifteen years I spent with my husband. I’m not counting. You call that a life?’ Many time you may have discount many part of your life. So without samadhi whatever number of years we live we may have to discount at some court.
Understand, it is time to work for samadhi, to achieve samadhi, and radiate samadhi. I tell you even working for it is worthy. Even the path is such a joy. Achieving secondary. Even working, it gives you, it opens a new dimension. Please understand, I have seen all atheist civilizations suffering with the depression. They just die in depression because outer world infrastructure, see the modern day civilization, the humanity has reached the peak of outer world infrastructure. So nothing more to explore. Nothing more to achieve. So when they’re, they, for atheists, their inner space is closed. They don’t even bother about that space. Then what to do? Depression is the only thing. Depression is the only thing. But when you start working in the inner space, suddenly new dimension is opened in your life. Suddenly new dimension is opened. You have something to achieve, somewhere to travel. You’re entertained.
Understand, working for samadhi is the ultimate entertainment. Because you don’t need any object to entertain you. You can entertain you constantly. Sometime you may not be able to handle your video games. Sometime you may not have your TV. Sometime you may not have your cell phone. Sometime they’ll ask you, ‘Please now this the time to close your electronic items and switch it off. In the, keep it in switch off mode. In your flight.’ And how long you’ll be looking at the same sky mall book? No, that book oh God. The amazing power of marketing. If you read you will feel as if without the object you cannot live. The words are put in such a way, till today you don’t even know about that object, but after you read that ad you’ll feel that without that object you can’t live and something seriously is missing in your life. Those photographs and that words. God. Naturally the advertisements, the ads they make, the commercials which they make in this country even for psychiatric medicines and all these depressants. People really feel tempted. No, sometime even I feel tempted. The ad for the foods and the medicines, oh God.
Just working, just, that’ll be the greatest entertainment for your inner space. For your inner space. Where you don’t need to close it. Where you don’t need to shut it down. It is just, I can say, not only best entertainment, best life. Even if one person struggles towards samadhi experience, it raises thousands of people’s consciousness. So even if you are seeking the samadhi experience, achieving something, seeking, you will see you are raising the consciousness of thousands of people, thousands of people. And one more thing, you’re all intelligent enough. If you start seeking, it has to happen. It will happen. It will happen. And it has to happen.
See, I know the mental set-up of different civilizations. In Bharat for a man to exist, if he remembers two, three laws that’s enough. But here for you to exist at least two hundred laws everyday you have to remember. If you can remember two hundred laws and live your life you are intelligent enough to work for samadhi. You are awakened enough. In Sanskrit we have a basic need for samadhi. 1:07:36 Pratya ………….Akratum. Awakening of the individual consciousness. Having the clear identity purpose, do’s and don’ts, ideas about pleasure and pain of their life. I know for sure in everyone of you the 1:07:56pratya ch, the individual consciousness awakening is happening. That is why you are able to live with so many laws, so many understandings, so many things.
In Bharat still I know the villages, at least one thousand villages where they don’t even know their president or prime minister’s name. I’m not talking about American presidents name. Bharatn President or Prime Minister name. At least one thousand villages are there. They have never seen court. They’ve never heard of police station. Any legal enforcement department. From the Bharatn government, central government or state government has not entered that village. At least one thousand villages I can tell. In Bharat, those people, their 1:08:46 praty…………..may not have happened. May, may not have happened. Because they don’t have the clear need for that identity. But here you have the need for identity so naturally your individual consciousness is awakened. So if you work, samadhi is surely achievable. It is possible. It is not a big thing. You don’t have to be afraid something its a different thing or it is very difficult. I have a story about that.
A dog applied for a job as high powered secretary. The advertisement stated that the successful applicant must have good key board skills, a command of shorthand, and be able to speak a second language. The interviewer sat the dog at the computer and watched in amazement as the animal formed the most complex functions including spread sheets and email. Then he gave the dog dictation and was impressed by the hound’s ability to write 120 words a minute in shorthand. ‘Well,’ he said at the end of the interview, ‘It looks as if the job is yours. There is just one thing tough, one thing though, what about the second language?’ To which the dog replied, ‘Meow.’ It can do everything but it cannot pick up the second language.
Understand, but when an individual consciousness is awakened, the enlightenment, samadhi experience is not that difficult for you. It is not that difficult for you.
So through these sutra, I want to emphasize only this one thing. Virama pratyaya, bhyasa purvvam samskara seso nyah. Your mental activity of clutching ceases only the samskaras engrams which does not cause disturbances in the inner space remains. So through these word, through this sutra, Patanjali says, ‘Don’t have fear. Put samadhi as the first priority.’ Maybe when he was talking about asamprajnata samadhi he would have seen little fear in some of the disciples face so he says, ‘Don’t worry only the samskaras which do cause disturbance they remain.’ Whatever causes disturbance disappears. So don’t worry, don’t have fear. You will not disappear. Only your disturbances will disappear.
So I want you to understand the truth, the same truth and work, achieve samadhi, live the life of Jeevan Mukti. Let you all achieve and radiate the Jeevan Mukti, Living Enlightenment. Let you all achieve and radiate the Eternal Bliss, Nithyananda. Thank you.
