“‘Patanjali yoga sutras’.”
‘Patanjali yoga sutras’. Today we will be entering into the fourteenth sutra. I will now tell the sutra and its translation, and then I will add what is to be added.
‘Committed and intense practice of unclutching makes one firmly established in higher state of awareness’.
In this book, each sutra, each aphorism is capable of creating a religion. Each sutra is independently intelligent to lead a person to enlightenment. Please understand the word yoga means uniting; uniting with the ultimate. In Bhagavad Gita each chapter is called as yogam. Each chapter can independently lead you to enlightenment. So He talks about eighteen different paths. When Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita, whatever major parts available were enlightenment. He compiled everything and presented it in one book. Eighteen major parts were enlightenment. He describes and leads people to enlightenment through various ways. That is why each chapter is called one Yoga. Here Patanjali, the amazing intellect happened in the inner science, each sutra is independently intelligent to lead you to enlightenment. Each sutra is a yoga in Patanjali’s works.
Swamiji repeats the sutra in Sanskrit here
There are so many different kinds of religions, spiritual philosophies, and spiritual groups that have happened in this planet Earth. Different kinds of teachings have been shared in this planet Earth and different kinds of philosophies have been created. Millions and millions of books; sometimes, when I go and see the Barnes and Noble or Landmark book shop, I feel Oh God, why should I add little more confusion; why should I add little more to the existing confusion? So much of spiritual literature. There is a website in the internet, where you can see how much is available in one place. So much is available. From time immemorial, all the masters keep on talking and creating spiritual literatures. Not only the Masters of the past, even the present Masters, all of us are continuously talking and producing spiritual material.
If I honestly look inside and see why I am continuously talking every day and sharing the same with everyone, I can easily say why Buddha was talking for forty years. Buddha was preaching everyday for forty years. Even Shankara was continuously writing. Before thirty two years of age, He had established four strong monasteries and maybe written 200 volumes.
The only reason that I can find for talking continuously is to constantly make you practice. The spiritual path is such. Very beautifully, Krishna says in the Gita, that by their very nature the senses are created as looking outside, in the direction of the outer world. So turning you in, turning you towards enlightenment, turning you towards the source is not that easy. Every moment you are again looking outward. If you listen to some spiritual satsang or if you read some spiritual literature, then for a few minutes, you turn inside. By the time the satsang is over, you are already out. By the time the ideas leave your mind, you are already out. Constantly you need to be inspired to turn in, and go inside. That is why the Masters go on and on talking and writing. In the last six years, I have spoken more than five thousand hours and more than five hundred volumes already transcribed and my archives department says that they have transcribed only seventeen percent. Only seventeen percent of what I have spoken is transcribed and is out in the form of books. Only twenty percent is edited and published and still I am adding material every day. Sometimes I wonder why and I realize that continuously human beings have to be told to look in. With various words, with various techniques, with various stories, with various jokes, in different forms, constantly human beings need to be reminded to look in, turn in and live enlightenment. That is the reason, all the spiritual masters and the leaders; they go on and on and on. The largest spiritual literature on planet Earth exists in Sanskrit and I don’t know how big library is required where you can fit it in. It is nothing but the continous expressions and discourses of the living Masters.
This sutra is the reason why Masters are continuously talking; why spiritual literatures are continuously produced. This sutra is all about constantly inspiring you to constantly practice. Even If I have to give the essence of all the spiritual literatures; sometimes when we read Buddha’s teachings, or the Shiva Sutra or the Bhagavad Gita, you will feel that many ideas are repeated. Even in my discourse, sometimes, people come and tell me Swamiji you are saying the same idea. I am telling the same idea because you are not listening. Understand, I have to tell the same thing, because you are not listening/
Somebody asked Buddha ‘you are talking the same things for the last forty years’. Buddha replied saying ‘If you had heard it first time, I would never have spoken it again’. The truth is only one thing, but constantly it is told again, again and again through different ways, through different methods, in different languages with different understandings. If I have to give the essence of everything; what Buddha taught, what Krishna taught, what Shankara taught, What Jesus taught, what Mohammed taught, what Zarathustra taught, the reason why they spoke the same thing again again and again is this one Sutra.
Please understand Patanjali is the only Master who is not repeating the ideas again and again, because in this one Sutra, he says very clearly why things should be repeated. At the end of it he says, I respect your intelligence. I am not going to repeat it any more. The reason for repetition is that we forget.
If this one sutra is understood, then we will know why the Masters are repeating the same thing again and again. Sometimes, even the same words are being repeated, without feeling bored. That is the greatness of the Masters. I have conducted two hundred Ananda Spurana Program’s and more than two hundred Nithya Spurana Program. And our Life Bliss Program level one and level two program hundreds of times. If you see the audio and video recording of these programs, it will be almost literally repeating. People ask me how you are able to repeat the same thing day in and day out. Are you not feeling bored ? I tell them, that every time I repeat there is a new crowd sitting in front of me. Not only that, even if the old people are sitting, they have forgotten. If they know that what I am talking is repetition, only then I will feel reluctant or bored. Either they have not heard, or even if they have heard, they have forgotten. Patanjali gives the essence, why again and again and again these truths are repeated.
Let you achieve and radiate the eternal bliss. Nithyananda. Thank You.
