19 September 2008, Ananda Sabha, Bidadi ashram, ashramite meeting…
‘Song of Sanyasin’ by Vivekananda - commentary (not full... only few verses)
Wake up the note!
Pauses and pulls the mike closer.
Ma… in this they have written: composed ***. This is different ma…This is different. There is another one song. I will… alright, I will read this and… okay… oh this is a series of poem… he wrote in different place… all poems are here… mmm… yes yes… ok… all the poems he wrote are here. Ok ok… mmm…
Wake up the note! the song that had its birth Far off, where worldly taint could never reach In mountain caves and glades of forest deep, Whose calm no sigh for lust or wealth or fame Could ever dare to break; where rolled the stream Of knowledge, truth, and bliss that follows both. Sing high that note, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Strike off thy fetters! Bonds that bind thee down, Of shining gold or darker, baser ore; Love, hate; good, bad; and all the dual throng, Know, slave is slave, caressed or whipped, not free For fetters, though of gold, are not less strong to bind; Then off with them, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Aye, what I told you this morning…same thing only this is… Prana Nada… what I told you this morning, the same line… whether you are caressed or whipped, slave is a slave. That is… in the morning I was telling an important concept see da… where your ego is settled, until you live according to that, whether you fulfill it or you don’t, depression is the base see…. Do you understand? Just for you, I have brought …. laughs loudly.
Mmm?
For fetters, though of gold… that is… there is something called immediate freedom da… that is… morning when you wake up, just conducting your life according to how you think it should be… waking up at whatever time you feel like… doing a job according to how you think it should be done… spending the money that comes according to how you feel… this is called immediate freedom. Only when you shake that immediate freedom, your cognitive shift will happen da. That ‘I’ and ‘mine’ – the feeling, the inner being is there right? The shift will happen to it. If you watch I do here, I will be shaking that immediate freedom da… nothing else I will be doing. Whatever you think as your immediate freedom… in that only your personality will be held. If you see… I was telling him this morning, to Prana Nada…
If I have to tell this to all of you in a way you can understand it in the context of your life… Starting from tomorrow if I give you ten days holidays, saying you don’t have to attend the routine, what will you do? First four days what will you do? You will just be sleeping… tossing around in the bed… after that what will happen? After four of five day? Your desires will take over you. The routine that is repeatedly followed to raise your consciousness only will be boring to you. So you will be jolly, free for four days. Then what will happen, the weeds that are inside you – the unconscious – will take over you. After that if you see, without your knowledge, again you will be a slave only. Presently what do you think? Is there a need to work like a slave? But after four days if you see… what will you be doing? You will be a slave to your desires and you will be functioning! Your eating time, your sleeping time – everything – that will be postponing. If you see, a thick depression layer will develop (he shows a girdle like hand gesture). Now when that is guiding your routine, without your knowledge, a thick depression layer will develop around you. But the lifestyle that swami gives, if you see what it will do, that thick depression will not develop. Because day by day, day by day, a lighter mood will start developing. There is a very big difference between these two. This is what I was telling when I was talking to Prana Nada this morning.
That is what he is telling…
dual throng, Know, slave is slave, caressed or whipped, not free For fetters, though of gold, are not less strong to bind; Then off with them, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
He says dual throng…caressed or whipped….whether shown love or beaten, your ego based routine… your ego based lifestyle… will show that ‘immediate freedom’, but what will happen? After a few days, it will become ‘take it for granted’. It will become, ‘take it for granted.’ It will be forgotten. After that…
Not less strong to bind
he says... Very strongly I will bind he says…
Then off with them, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Let darkness go! the will-o’-the-wisp that leads With blinking light to pile more gloom on gloom. This thirst for life, for ever quench; it drags From birth to death, and death to birth, the soul He conquers all who conquers self. Know this And never yield, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
This is what I was saying… in the period between death and birth – the one who says, ‘Aha…a good job I have done and come…’ is a sannyasi. In the period between birth and death, the one who thinks, ‘Aha, we are doing something big…’ is a samsari!
thirst for life, for ever quench; it drags
The thirst towards life, never dies. It will drag, drag, drag, keep on dragging. After having taken many lives, getting bored and settling is what I am calling anubhava da… having taken millions of lives… But the person who has taken millions of lives, felt bored, and then settled…just by seeing him if a person understands it and catches him, then that person is a Gnana Guru! That is the relationship that happens between the Guru and the disciple… What all experiences will come through many lives, I have finished all that… that is what you call senior soul…you call it old soul… otherwise, between my 31 years and the soul that is inside, there is no connection see… The moment of seeing the senior soul, capturing that experience and raising oneself is what is called sannyas…he says…
He conquers all who conquers self. Know this And never yield, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
‘Who sows must reap,’ they say, ‘and cause must bring The sure effect; good, good; bad, bad; and none Escape the law. But whoso wears a form Must wear the chain.’ Too true; but far beyond Both name and form is Atman, ever free. Know thou art That, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
By escaping a law or a situation alone, never think you will really escape. If any problem comes… by healing within oneself saying ‘I am Atman’ alone, escape. That is freedom he says daa… Now all of you when a problem comes, what do you do da? You escape from that situation or you escape from that person or you escape from that place. That is what you do right? By escaping for that you say freedom will come you see… That is what he says No…
Both name and form is Atman, ever free. Know thou art That
Inner solution… By applying the life solutions inside you, the freedom that comes, that alone is freedom he says. Only that will take you ultimate freedom. Only that will take you to freedom. Besides that, through any other way if you try to go towards freedom, it will take you only towards more and more terrible bondage.
‘Who sows must reap,’ they say, ‘and cause must bring
Amma, the commentary that I am giving… this…. Maneesha, for you only… write it beautifully… paragraph by paragraph, write the commentary… we will publish it as a book… mmm? Because this is a deep meaning… what I am giving…
‘Who sows must reap,’ they say, ‘and cause must bring The sure effect; good, good; bad, bad; and none Escape the law. But whoso wears a form Must wear the chain.’ Too true; but far beyond
That is, as soon as you take a form, through anything that you might try to attain freedom or by escaping from anything if you might try to attain freedom, by resisting from anywhere within if you try to attain freedom, it never happens. That is like… when you remove one chain and keep aside itself, you tie another chain. That is…if you want to heal a wound, you should only apply medicine. Can you heal it by digging into it continuously? Likewise, when you think you want freedom, whatever you may do outside, it will put you more and more, more and more in depression. From depression whatever work you may do, it will take you to depression only. What job you do from bondage, will take you to bondage only.
See da, you guys do somethings just for the sake of it… right?… To escape from a problem, you change something in the outer situations right? In the outer situations or the outer world, you change something right? After that, a worse sorrow only will come. But what…? If you show that a worse sorrow has come, you will think, ‘people will ask me…’ so what do you do? Without showing that… without showing that a worse sorrow has come, what do we do? You say, ‘Ah…I did everything right only. Leave it…I am doing everything correctly only…’ That is how we are going in life… see da… You understand? Mmm? Understand properly. This is a good lesson for all of you da. To escape from here, you go to Pondicherry. When you go to Pondicherry, there will be a greater sorrow...to escape from there you go to Salem; from Salem you run to Tiruvannamalai… if you are not able to escape from anywhere, you go out… So you escape somewhere right? By escaping, only a greater sorrow will come. After that comes, what will you do? You have to save your face right? So you will say, ‘Nothing of that sort. Everything is fine only.’ Even if we know that the suffering came only because of the decision that we took, and we suffer, we will only be consoling ourselves and doing something… there will be no chance of liberation from it. There is no chance for liberation from it.
What all is he saying?
Both name and form is Atman, ever free. Know thou art That
Again and again, know ‘that art That’… Inside oneself, again and again standing up, and experiencing the inner world freedom… through acceptance… now whatever happens in the outer world, saying ‘it will happen like this only…’ accepting it… knowing about the inevitability of the moments… three to four important things da… understanding that we are the Atman…thinking that we are the atman… just thinking that we are the atman is enough, no need to feel it… thinking that one is the Atman… thinking that I am the jeeva that is not bondaged by body and mind…. These are the leela that are happening within me… these are but the reflection that I see… thinking all these things… that is… by reminding oneself of these truths, the freedom that happens - is what is the freedom. That is the ultimate freedom.
Know thou art That, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
They know not truth who dream such vacant dreams As father, mother, children, wife and friend. The sexless Self! whose father He? whose child? Whose friend, whose foe is He who is but One? The Self is all in all, none else exists; And thou art That, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Aye…
They know not truth who dream such vacant dreams As father, mother, children, wife and friend. The sexless Self! whose father He? whose child? Whose friend, whose foe is He who is but One?
That is… you will be seeing vacant dreams… this life is vacant dreams only…empty dreams only right? In that, when you think that the most torturous things are happening, it means that the time has come to stand up! But what do you do? You alter the dream! You alter the situation, you alter the dream. Then what happens? You continue the dream. Swami again and again says see… when I am boiling… when the potato is being boiled, if it jumps out what will happen to it? It will go for a waste see… Without falling out, if you stay inside and see what is going to happen, that is what is becoming a Sidda – he says…
By jumping out, what happens? You extend the dream. See, if it is a wild dream only, you will awaken. If it is a mild dream, what will happen? You will not wake up. If I am changing your life into a wild dream, I am waking you up (He clicks His fingers as He says this)! I am doing the job of waking you up. If you say, ‘Ayyoo, leave me Swami,’ if you shout and change your situation, what will happen? It will become a mild dream. Then what will you do? You will keep on continuing. You can continue for how many ever days. For how long can you continue? You can continue for how many ever days. That is each one’s preference…mmm?
There is but One – The Free, The Knower – Self! Without a name, without a form or stain. In him is Maya, dreaming all this dream. The Witness, He appears as nature, soul. Know thou art That, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Paah… alright…10 to 15 verses are there da… beautiful verses… mmm? Have thou no home. What home can hold thee, friend? The sky thy roof, the grass thy bed; and food What chance may bring, well cooked or ill, judge not. No food or drink can taint that noble Self Which knows itself. Like rolling river free Thou ever be, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Thus, day by day, till Karma’s powers spent, Release the soul for ever. No more is birth,
Every day, he says, live as an example of awakening…What you guys do…? When you come, you come with this inspiration only. After some time, what you do? You forget that every day is only for me to boil and awaken you. Do you understand? You forget that every day is only for the purpose of boiling. Then what do you do? You just settle down with a routine attitude thinking, ‘Ah…all this is just a business. What is there in this? What is there in that? you think… and get diluted. Me itself you start taking for granted.
Thus, day by day, till Karma’s powers spent, Release the soul for ever. No more is birth, Nor I, nor thou, nor God, nor man. The ‘I’ Has All become, the All is ‘I’ and Bliss. Know thou art That, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Heed then no more how body lives or goes, Its task is done. Let Karma float it down; Let one put garlands on, another kick This frame; say naught. No praise or blame can be Where praiser praised, and blamer blamed are one. Thus be thou calm, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Truth never comes where lust and fame and greed Of gain reside. No man who thinks of woman As his wife can ever perfect be; Nor he who owns the least of things, nor he Whom anger chains, can ever pass thro’ Maya’s gates. So give these up, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Say, ‘Peace to all: From me no danger be To aught that lives. In those that dwell on high, In those that lowly creep, I am the Self in all. All life both here and there, do I renounce, All heavens and earths and hells, all hopes and fears.’ Thus cut thy bonds, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
Where seekest thou? That freedom, friend, this world Nor that can give. In books and temples vain Thy search. Thine only is that hand that holds The rope that drags thee on. Then cease lament, Let go thy hold, Sannyasin bold! Say – ‘Om tat sat, Om!’
That is…friends or the world, books or temples – will not give philosophy. The feet of the Guru who lives the Truth – catch that and don’t leave it, and live. mmm? After that, there is no sorrow for you… he says…
There are lots of remaining verses. We will see later… I’ll talk on each verse ma. Shantananda… Keep this mmm….? I’ll explain each verse. Mmm? Good…
And He keeps it to His right on the bolster….after a few moments, He keeps it to His left on the small table beside His seat and says:
Keep it here itself… mmm?
A few moments of silence pass. He sits looking ahead to the left and to the right… with a subtle smile and eyes alive…
Vivekananda was a real sannyasi. chch… real sannyasi… a lakshiya turavi (one who sacrifices for the sake of a goal)… to show how a Paramahamsa lived on planet Earth… what a record all these are… these are all the expressions of a great consciousness… Bringing the clarity within again and again… and standing up… and the decisions that are taken out of THAT… only out of THAT, freedom can come… he says…
To come out of depression, when you change the situation, what happens to you? mmm? You will go into a depression worse than that daaa. The situation will set itself as a depression worse than that only… Because… when you are in depression, will you have the clarity enough to take another decision? Or will you have the clarity to handle the things that come in front of you? There will not be. Then what we will do… whatever we may do, what will come of it? You will only be hooking 4 or 5 more keys in the hooks. It is like how, a man who is drunk… if he gets a rope… unconsciously he will bind himself more and more with it. Thinking he is undoing it, what will he be doing? He will be more and more binding himself with it. This is how are all the decisions taken during depression.
Good pa…be blissful…
