“Twenty years ago if someone had told you that information from around…”
Twenty years ago if someone had told you that information from around the world will be available with a single click on your laptop, you wouldn’t have believed it, but today it has become a reality. Most of us can not do without the internet today. What would not have been believable and provable, a little over a decade ago, is day to day reality now.
We have problems in believing what our ancient sages, the rishis, said many thousand years ago because we do not have scientific proof that what they said exists. We do not believe because we have not experienced the reality. However, once we find a way to experience the truth of what has been said, however implausible it may have seemed, it would become reality.
I’m proposing a theory similar to what our rishis did. Of course, it’s not just a theory, it’s the truth as experienced by many rishis and yogis, and if you work on it, not only can you understand it but you can also experience it.
When I say cosmic intelligence I don’t mean just the data or information from or about the Universe. You can get that from a website. But something more than information is required to process the right data at the right time, that’s what I call intelligence. It is the capacity, the energy, and the power to deal with information. All information is recorded in matter and can be passed on. Intelligence, on the other hand, is consciousness, which humans are unable to create, even at the level of artificial intelligence. Computer intelligence is not human intelligence, however much data the processor can crunch, and however fast it may crunch.
Let us look further at what I mean by cosmic intelligence, how to access it and make it a reality in our life.
There are many living entities present on earth, such as plants, animals, even rocks (science has determined that these inanimate objects too possess some life form and basic intelligence). According to the yogis, the human body is the most evolved and intelligent system, because consciousness happens only in the human system. Therefore, only humans have the potential to evolve into the next higher dimension. Somebody asked me: “Swamiji, why should we meditate? We evolved from monkeys into humans, and based on the theory of evolution we should naturally evolve into super humans”. I told him that until we became humans, we did not have consciousness, only instinct, and that’s how the natural growth or evolution happened. But humans have one more dimension called intellect, which controls instinct. Natural growth will not happen anymore just by biological evolution; now it has to be your conscious choice to move towards higher intelligence. A buffalo cannot become a Buddha no matter how hard it tries; only human beings can achieve the ultimate consciousness to become a Buddha.
Patanjali says, when you were a tortoise, all your past life memories were stored in that body. When you became a higher level animal, all of that past life was then stored in it. As you gradually evolve to the level of human beings, memories from all your past lives are stored in you. If you know the technique, you can actually tap into any of that memory. This may sound like a theory, but they say humans can fly and swim without any training. In Japan they did a research where the moment children are born, they are put in water and they start swimming automatically. If they are not told by adults that they can’t fly, they will try. The moment you condition them by telling them that they can’t do it, they forget. By nature we have all the intelligence in our human body. The difficulty is we strongly believe we are limited. In addition, we don’t know the technique to tap all the dimensions of our being.
I’m going to give a small diagram about how our mind resists opening itself to the innate intelligence available to our being.
Swami draws a diagram.
This is a time shaft diagram. Consider time as a shaft which is continuously moving, moving from the right to the left, the future is constantly flowing and becoming the past. The time shaft represents the incidents, memories, or cosmic intelligence. If you can go back in time and get any information, then you have the cosmic intelligence. All your past is available before the present moment (left side of the time shaft). All the future is available after the present moment (right side of the time shaft). The present moment is where the future and past meet. Usually your mind wanders between past and future, jumping back and forth. If you decide not to think about either past or future, you cannot have thoughts, because a thought is nothing but a jump from past to future or future to past. If you take 10 jumps in one second, you are having 10 TPS (thoughts per second). A person who is restless, say he has 100 TPS, is very far from the time shaft. If you are continuously jumping between the past and future you cannot become truly aware of your past or your future. To become truly aware of your past you have to be in the present moment.
When you are in the zone of 80 TPS instead of 100 TPS, jumping back and forth of the mind reduces, meaning you are less restless. Then you move closer to the cosmic intelligence. And if the TPS reduces further to 60, you will be even closer to the time shaft. The closer you are to the time shaft the more clearly you can see your past and future. People may ask – even if we are restless we remember the past, how do you say that with less TPS you see the past clearly?
When TPS is more, you may see the past as you want, not as it is. You see only a few incidents in a few moments, try to connect them and judge your past. As the TPS comes down you will have a clearer idea of your past. For example, if you have a party in your house, when the party is over you will create a file about all the mistakes you made and remember only those so that you don’t repeat them. You won’t remember all the joys you felt and shared. If your TPS is too much, you will remember only the file not the whole incident. The moment you can remember the whole incident or past, you can learn wonderful lessons. This will also show you your future, because the past is nothing but one dimension of time, and so is the future.
Vivekananda says: if you know a handful of clay completely, you will know about all the clay available on earth. If you have clarity about past you will have clarity about future. If don’t have clarity about future be very clear that you only remember fragments of past, as you want, and not as it happened. If you bring down the TPS and become calmer, less restless, naturally you will be able to see your past and future more clearly. I don’t mean past in this life alone, but your past in all the lives you have lived. Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, you have had many births; that’s the truth, and that intelligence is there in you. The farther you are from the time shaft, the narrower is your view.
Through techniques like meditation you can bring down your TPS to zero; you are completely in the present moment; you touch eternity. Past, present and future put together is eternity. You can’t touch it in the past since it’s already gone, you can’t touch it in the future since it’s yet to happen. You can touch it only in the present moment. If you can totally relax in the ‘here and now’, be totally aware and totally conscious, you can touch the eternity and become aware of the whole past and whole future.
I can say honestly that whatever I’m speaking is from my experience. I have no other investment in promoting this concept, except to inspire you to understand that it’s possible for you. A tree is waiting for the seed to rupture, and the seed is waiting for the tree to happen before it ruptures. A seed has to rupture first for the tree to happen. Similarly, a master is the one who has become a tree and tells you that you can also break the seed and become a tree. Master is a proof and he gives you the courage. It’s a simple courtesy. If someone is ahead of you on a busy road, and you want to know how the traffic is, if you call him on his cell phone, won’t he have the simple courtesy to tell you about the traffic condition? Similarly, it is simple courtesy for me to tell you this honest truth. It can happen in your life too, with your courage to explore and penetrate the present moment.
Whenever you experience intuition, or have Déjà vu like experiences, knowingly or unknowingly your TPS suddenly comes down, you are very calm and relaxed, and you get a glimpse of the future without your knowledge. When you are blissful your TPS comes down. That is why when you are with a good friend or your beloved time seems to fly, but when you are with someone boring, time seems to crawl. When TPS is high, and you are restless you feel time is moving slowly. In those moments when you know something about the future, your TPS has suddenly dropped.
People who are time conscious will be in hell. They may achieve whatever they need to achieve in life, but inside they will be in hell. Time bound awareness is good discipline socially, but I call it bondage. Whenever you are attending a business meeting, you need to be time bound, as you need to be socially responsible. But whenever you can, when you finish your business, relax from the time bound awareness. Just as you relax when you remove your coat and shoes, learn how to relax from the time bound awareness after you complete what you have to as a time bound responsibility. You will see and enjoy a different dimension of life, the low TPS bliss, only when you drop out of time bound awareness. Being time bound is good for business but not for living, because life is more than just a business.
I know an enlightened swami who lived in Bharat. He had 25 clocks, each set to a different time. When I visited him the first time I thought he has devotees all over the world and each clock was set to a different country! [Audience laughs] When I asked him why he has so many clocks, he said: “If I want the time to be 12:30, I choose the clock showing 12:30 to be the current time, if I want it to be 4:30, I pick the one that shows that time. If I want a special time that none of these 25 clocks show, I set the time in another clock and use it!” [More laughter from audience]. He was not just a Swami, he ran an institution like a CEO. I asked him how he managed it. He said when he goes out of his room, he has a watch that shows the chronological time, and he would follow all routines as required, administering, returning phone calls, etc. But the moment he enters his room, he removes the watch and lives with the many clocks. The idea of time has disappeared. If you can live at least for a few days, in your house, not in your office, without the awareness of time, you will open yourself to a new dimension of your being.
I did a study and found that whenever we are not bound by time, the adrenalin level is very low, and you feel a sense of well being. Whenever the adrenalin level is high you are constantly in tension. You can live all 24 hrs of a day in time bound awareness, but you will naturally be always hurrying, worrying, adrenalin level will go up, which will lead to heart problems and all kinds of problems. By the age of fifty, you will die and have eternity available to you. One who is time bound can’t have a vacation – if he’s worrying at office its called work, if he’s worrying at home, he’s preparing for work, if he’s worrying on the beach its called vacation. The place may change, but the mental setup of worrying won’t change.
People ask me how I speak for many hours without any notes; I tell them it’s because I never went to school properly [laughter]. I’m not confined by the time bound awareness; that’s the worst conspiracy done to you by schools. Slip out of it at least once in a while and you will understand what I call intelligence. Read about any great discoveries by any scientist, they were done only when they were not under time bound awareness! Where did Archimedes discover his principle? Where did Newton discover the theory of gravity? The great things from the cosmic intelligence erupt out when your TPS is low, when you are not time-bound. When you are time bound you are a good businessman or engineer, but only when you reach the timeless awareness, and your TPS drops you can become an artist or a poet.
The technique to drop from time bound awareness is what I call meditation. All great truths, scientific and mystical, are discovered only when you are beyond time. Mass production can be done with time bound awareness; mass always lives with time bound awareness. If you can drop out of that and escape from that, you become intelligent; all intelligent people are dropouts! All path finders are path breakers! When you drop out of time bound awareness, even one idea, one thought that hits your consciousness can transform your whole life. Whatever you can achieve with time bound awareness throughout your life, you can achieve thousand times more with one moment of timeless awareness. For example, can you equate all that you created with your life’s earnings with whatever the theory of gravity has created (which resulted from just one moment of timeless awareness)? Apart from personal comforts and material benefits, the timeless awareness gives you a sense of tremendous fulfillment that you lived your life. A single glimpse of zero TPS is enough to give you the deepest possible fulfillment that you lived your life. That’s the ultimate vacation. Unless you know how to drop the TPS, even if you are in the world’s happiest place, you cannot have a vacation. If you can drop the TPS here and now, your whole life will be a vacation. When I was in USA, I saw a board that said “Disneyland, where the party never ends”. Why do you need a separate place and time to be happy or to celebrate? Your whole life will be nithyotsava (eternal festival) if you can drop your TPS; you will be able to penetrate your whole past as it happened and whole future as it will happen; you will have tremendous clarity. The past binds you again and again. All your future is nothing but an updated version of your past - you don’t want some incidents so you remove it, you want some so you add it or repeat it. You try to create the same past in the future, with some alteration. If you don’t know your past completely, you will repeat the same things in the future. If your TPS can come down and you know your past as it happened you won’t repeat the same past in future, you become a karma muktha, liberated from karma. You are a karma bandha, under the bondage of karma, because you have not lived your past completely.
For example, your childhood always seems golden; many people have the idea of a golden past. You may feel your life in college was great, but when you were actually in college you didn’t really feel that way. Why? Because your suffering has become too much now, and in comparison, the past seems very nice! Now you attribute joy to your past, and if given a chance you want to repeat it, but actually when you lived through it did you experience it? No. If you come down to zero TPS, you will understand it wasn’t as great as you think. Unfulfilled desires are what I call samskaras. Samskaras will pull you to travel in the same route, again and again. That’s why they say history always repeats itself; not only history of humanity, but even yours. Take an oath never to repeat the same mistake again and you will never be able to commit any mistakes, because we don’t have the intelligence to commit new mistakes! We only repeat our past mistakes, because we don’t truly know and remember our past.
All meditation techniques are ways to bring down your TPS. The vision about all the past and all the future is what I call cosmic intelligence. If you bring down your TPS to zero, relax in the present moment, relax now and here, what mystics call cosmic intelligence will become a reality in your life. You may forget about timeless awareness when you wear your watch! Just because some news is not in the newspaper, you cannot say it didn’t happen. Same way just because you didn’t experience timeless awareness, you can’t say there is no such thing. What we know is different from what is. If you can relax in the present moment, at zero TPS, for at least 11 kshanas, you will penetrate the time shaft and alter the future incidents. If you can stay in zero TPS for 21 kshanas, you will penetrate the time shaft and future comes into your hands. A kshana is the time between two thoughts, and longer the kshana lower your TPS. These two statements are mystical and based on words of great rishis. Even if you disregard these even though they are truths, you can experience the rest directly.
If you sit in front of a person who meditates or in front of an enlightened man you feel fresh and you are attracted to his presence. People often ask me: “Swamiji, when we sit in your presence we don’t know how time passes, we feel happy, why is that?” This is because your TPS drops. If you have 100 TPS, and you come in the presence of someone at zero TPS, your TPS will drop to 50; if you were at 80 TPS initially, it will drop to 40 TPS, because the energy is infectious. That’s why we say: “satsangatve nissangatvam, nitsangatve nirmohatvam , nirmohatve nischalatatvam, nishchalatatve jeevanmukthi”. It means, when you are in the presence of a man who lives in zero TPS, in good company, (satsangatve), you become nitsanga, your restlessness comes down and you are free of attachments; when restlessness reduces, intelligence is active, buddhi is clear and you become desire less and delusion less (nirmohatvam); you then reach nishchalatatva which is total stillness of mind with no thoughts, and jeevanmukthi, zero TPS zone or enlightenment.
If you can bring down your TPS, you can penetrate the complete past, future and present. The whole cosmic intelligence will be available to you just like the information from around the world is available on the internet at a browsing center. I call the brow center (ajna chakra) as the browsing center. If you can relax in the third eye energy center or the brow center and experience zero TPS, all the past, present and future of your life and others life will be available to you. It may sound like a fairy tale, but I have experienced it and you can too if you work on it.
Q\&A:
Q: Do you have zero TPS when you die and the brain stops working? What is the difference between that zero TPS state and achieving it through meditation? A: At the time of death you don’t achieve zero TPS state. Brain not working does not mean zero TPS. You may not receive information from senses and process it, but it can work on past memories. Even when your eyes are closed, during dreams, no information is received from the outside but information is processed inside the mind without inputs from outside. Same way, during death, you don’t receive information from outside, but you will process information already collected. Death is not zero TPS, only enlightenment is zero TPS. If you browse the website on NDE, (Near Death Experience), [www.near-death.com](http://www.near-death.com), you will see that an American doctor researched more than ten thousand people who had NDE. His conclusions prove the great truths of the yoga shastras.
The whole Nithya Spurana Program, that I personally conduct over four days (two days in USA), is about this one question, what is death and how to be aware at the time of death? In the Gita there’s a profound statement – at the time of leaving the body if you are aware or conscious, your next birth will be according to your choice, or you won’t have a next birth, and you will be enlightened. It is not only a statement, but solid truth. These four days, I do a programming of your mind, so that the moment the pain of death happens in your being, you become aware of the pain and restlessness and come to zero TPS. Its not that this meditation will help only during death, but even while living you will be able to reproduce the zero TPS state whenever you want it.
A scientist creates a formula to reproduce an experience in the outer world, like the theory of gravity, for instance. A mystic creates a formula to reproduce in others the same experience that happened to him inside, in the inner world. Paramahamsa is a man who is able to put the people in the same experience that happened to him spontaneously.
All I’m trying to do in these four days is give the formula, a meditation technique, through which you can have the same experience that happened in me spontaneously, when I meditated and became enlightened. I try to create the same space in you through a proper technique, to give you a glimpse of that experience in NSP, by working on the 7 layers of your body.
Q: Sometimes you get caught in an unpleasant situation, and you don’t talk, sometimes you have to speak up. I’m always being pushed around and don’t know how to deal with it. A: A small story: two friends, both drunkards are sitting in a pub and talking. One guy, fully drunk says: I am scared to go home; my wife will open the door and start screaming, and throwing things. I have to run inside and hide. Please tell me what to do, how to escape from her. The other one is surprised and says: in my house it‘s the opposite! I bang the door open, throw the shoes noisily around, bang the utensils, eat in the kitchen, bang the bedroom door open, shout, and still she acts as if she’s sleeping! Two different situations, in the first one the guy is afraid; in the second one the wife is afraid. I think it is up to you to choose to create the first or second situation. Don’t always choose to be in the first situation; decide to create the second situation sometimes.
Q: How do we know which path is right or wrong in general. A: I’m not here to judge which choice is right or wrong. I won’t be there on judgment day to make that decision. It all depends on individuals and situations.
Q: What is mind and what is the purpose of mind? A: Constant movement from past to future and back is the mind. The purpose of it was to do chronological planning, but it is used for everything other than that. For example, you need to drive your car and go to some place. Chronological planning is just planning how to go about it. But often, you will not stop with that, you will start worrying: when I take the car and go, I may feel sleepy, or the cop may stop me and give me a ticket, etc. Mind only does psychological worrying. It’s a tool given to you to live more happily, but it does all else except giving you bliss. I always say, mind your mind, then you will become no-mind.
Q: How did you know you became enlightened? How does it feel, and how do you know when you are out of it? A: There is no question of coming out of enlightenment, once you reach it. When you reach it there is no more doubt in you. Such a wonderful confidence will happen to you, you will have a deep clarity about everything including enlightenment. Just like you see I’m sitting in front of you, I can see it very clearly without a doubt about it.
Here’s a technique for those who are interested. First, just for a few minutes, relax, become aware of your body and be inside your boundary. Second, inhale and exhale and be deeply aware of your breathing. Third, be aware of your wandering mind, as much as possible.
