“Let’s enter into the next sutra”
Let’s enter into the next sutra
Be the un-same, same to friend as to stranger in honor and dishonor.
Understand Shiva is not giving this as a morality. No. He is giving it as a technique. He's saying be same to friend as to stranger, in honor and dishonor. Feels like a lesson which we learnt in first grade or when we started our life. But Shiva is not giving this as a teaching; he is giving this as a technique for enlightenment. Because he is giving it as a technique, we have to look little deep inside. Understand the earlier sutra,
The purity of other teachings is an impurity to us, in reality knows nothing as pure or impure.
This is like vacating your inner space, making your inner space simple and pure. In the second line, he is actually taking us little deeper.
In this first sutra, he is telling us to create the peace inside; in the second sutra he is telling us to carry the same peace when we are creating our day-to-day relationships, in our day-to-day activities also. That is the difference. He is giving this as a technique not as a teaching. The same word uttered in two different places, for two different purposes has two different meanings. Because Mahadeva is giving this as a technique for enlightenment, we need to look into it a little deeply. Else it is a regular morality lesson which is taught everywhere, and is impractical.
Anything which is taught everywhere will always be impractical, because people want to learn only impractical things. Impractical things have kind of a juice which attracts their attention and interest. Actually, we can comment only on impractical thing, on practical things we can comment and expand. So this sutra, if it is a teaching we can only comment on it, but since it is a technique, we can expand on it’s meaning which will help us to adopt, imbibe, internalize and practice it. It is not a teaching, it is a technique, he says
Be the un-same to same to friend as to stranger in honor and dishonor.
He is reminding us, he's telling us to bring the inner silence. Actually, when we vacate all the teachings we can remove all the ideas about people and we will be filled with silence in our inner space. What Shiva emphasizes here is that we should be able to carry that same silence when we start relating with the society, when we start facing people and incidents. Even during that time carrying the same silence in action, carrying the same intelligence in action - that is what Shiva is emphasizing through the second technique. It’s a very powerful thing; Shiva does not leave even one part of things unattended. I have seen many people who have experienced that silence inside, but they have not been successful in bringing that silence in their action, in their expression, in their life. Because of which they live two lives – schizophrenic lives, constantly conflicting between their inner understanding and their lifestyle.
Be the un-same, same to friend as to stranger, means you are supposed to drop the whole idea, teaching which you have about that person in your head. Teaching means concepts. All preconceived notions need to be dropped. A beautiful technique to achieve this is by visualizing about the person and expressing all your pent up emotions of anger, hatred, jealousy whatever you are harboring inside you against them and voicing them out into the air. Continue to hold the image in your inner space, let the mind shout what all it wants to tell. After a few minutes you’ll see not only the number of words which you want to tell is reduced, you’ll start seeing your problems, you’ll start seeing your own problems, you’ll start looking into your own problems too. Holding the images of the person in your inner space in silence, for which you have so much hatred will bring the enmity down, the violence, vengeance down. You will see suddenly, there’s no violence. Even when you see the person directly, that fear stroke or the fire is not happening. You are very relaxed, you are able to handle, you are able to face, and you are able to live. There’s a beautiful shloka in Gita:
Seeda ushma, sama dukhaa
During the cold, during the heat, during the joy, during the dukkha; being equal. Understand, that does not mean being non-responsive – cold, idiotic. Traditionally, it is understood as being dull with a long face as the sama dukhaa or samas chitta, no! Samas chitta means not carrying the impression of those incidents in your inner space. When a man walks on the ground, he lives a footprint, when a bird flies in the sky, it does not leave a footprint. We are supposed to live like a ‘paramahamsa’, who does not leave a footprint in the inner space. If we are a paramahamsa, we will not leave our footprint in our inner space.
This sutra: Be the same to friend as to stranger, means the inner space response is expected to be same. Our action will be expressing in a different way, but the inner space response should be the same, in honor and in dishonor. Whenever people try to honor me, I always see that I protect myself. Because the moment you accept the honor by another person, you have authorized him to dishonor you also.
One guy, he was a politician, a very cunning politician. He came to visit me as a devotee and soon started promoting himself as a writer and speaker. He was promoting himself to me and then he said, ‘Swamiji, I’ll write your biography and make you popular all over Bharat’.
This person had the ability to do so – no doubt about it; and he was trying his best to convince me. He even started writing. The first day he brought the script, I asked him to relax and told him that I’ll consider his offer and get back to him after meditating. If I tell you that I’ll get back to you after meditating means I’m trying to postpone, that’s all. And I told him, I’ll meditate and tell you. Many of our close devotees they said, Swamiji, it’s an honor if this person writes your biography. He’s such an orator and he’s really capable and this person has written more than 100 books – 100 titles, surely it’ll be a very big thing, please accept it. I told them, fools, don’t you understand, the moment I allow him to write my biography I am giving him the authority to talk about me as he wants. Tomorrow it self he can say whatever he wrote was by dictation, by force from me, it was not the actual thing as it happened. Understand, whenever we accept honor, we give the key to that person to dishonor us. Be very clear about this and only then decide. As we expected, later on we found out that he was actually paid by some of the missionaries. It was like an implanting process but fortunately, we nipped it in the bud. We were not completely sure of the whole thing but we understood it was not going to be doing any good. It was not with a good intention. It was such a revelation to all the disciples, I told them, understand, and accept the honor only from the person who has experienced you, who has experienced you. He can never dishonor you, even if he dishonors, he alone will be suffering, and you will not be suffering.
Understand, when you are living on the dharmic line, having a clear understanding about you, and allowing the people who experience you to honor you, you will see even if that same person dishonors you, you will not be touched in any way, Because dharma is very powerful, it stands even inside your inner space and protects you. If you follow the law you are protected in the outer world, if you follow the dharma you are protected in the inner world, you will never fall in depression. We bother so much about following the law to have the protection from the outer world, understand, follow the dharma too; you will never come into the difficulties and disturbances which come from the inner world. I tell you the inner world problems are much stronger and difficult and dangerous than the outer world problems. Because if the inner world problems happen, you are immediately shaken up and you will invite other outer world problems towards you as well.
Being dharmic – that is what Mahadeva means here. In all your relationships, let you be dharmic, let you be clear. You will see when dharmically somebody who has experienced you, even if he dishonors you, you will not feel affected. That person will only fall into the depression. Understand, just like a law which is clear, logic enforced properly, dharma too is enforced. Dharma is also properly enforced and it is still alive. Please understand, we are all happening, enlightened beings are happening again and again on the Planet Earth just to remind humanity about this one line, dharma is still alive. The cosmic law is still alive. There’s a beautiful one liner:
Dharmo rakshayte, rakshayteha
When you protect it, it will protect you. Dharma is so powerful. Many people question me, no, no, Swamiji I have seen good people like me are suffering, bad people like my enemies are enjoying. Understand, please understand the truth, first thing, good people never suffer- it may appear like suffering and if there is suffering, understand somewhere the dharma was lost, the dharma was lost.. I always tell the altered understanding:
Vipaareya gynana, perverted understanding. Perverted understanding is not dharma. Dharma means clear, honest to your center, to your understanding. One more important thing, you don’t even have to be honest to higher understandings which have not become a part of your experience, no, be honest and true to your understanding, that is more than enough. If you are in the level of dharma, just completely be in that dharma. They call it Swa-dharma. Being in tune, honest with the dharma which is your core, you’ll see there will not be any unnecessary movement. Their will not be any falling into the low mood, there will not be any falling this way and that way.
Dharmo rakshayte, rakshayteha
Dharma when you protect it, it protects you. And I tell you, when you protect the dharma, it gives such a strength, so much of courage. Traditionally, brahamana is supposed to derive his strength from the enlightenment, kshatriya and vaisheyas are supposed to derive strength from the dharma and the person who is working is supposed to derive strength from his Master’s dharma. Understand, it’s a very beautiful description, how you are supposed to derive strength.
Dharma will give the strength, otherwise in the war, in the battlefield how will he know, who is right and who is wrong, in the world of Kshatriya? And one more thing, we never had the problem the one who wins will write the history, no. The civilizations which are built on brutality, which are built on physical power, in this kind of civilizations always the person who won – he wrote the history. But our Bharatn tradition is totally unbiased. Even the kings who lost have been remembered as heroes. In many places, kings who lost the kingdom have been remembered as heroes. They have been highlighted in the history. Means history is not written by the person who won the war. It was written based on the line of dharma. It was centered and based on dharma. As I was telling you the other day, ordinary historians wrote the history seeing whatever happened in the length, breadth, depth. For example, the present incident would be recorded as: 200 people were sitting in front of Nithyananda and he was speaking. This is history. Purana means not only what has happened in the length, breadth, depth; what has happened in space and time also. So when a puranic, a Rishi writes the purana, he’ll say 200 people have been taken to a different state of consciousness by the strong teachings of Nithyananda. When he writes, he’ll record what has happened in space and time also. So naturally a so called normal historian who has got only two eyes and who can see only the length, breadth and depth will not be able to understand the puranas. Just because he is not able to understand the purana, it does not mean it is a myth, No! It is not a myth, it is beyond the myth, and it is the truth, nothing but the truth.
They have recorded the events as they happened. One more thing our Rishis had a strong, deep, intellectual clarity. To tell you honestly, stories like Mahabharata and others which are so detailed and logically sequenced in order can never be imagined and written. At the most they can blame only little bit of addition or deletion. No logical person can say the whole thing was created, No, Understand, it is not that people who were in Bharat in those days were complete fools, ready to listen to whatever you were saying, no, we had enough of atheism. We had enough of people who questioned; we had enough of people who fought. If the Rama’s lifestyle story were not completely true, how do you find temples all over Bharat visited by Rama or created and installed by Rama? Person who is building Rameshwaram temple will naturally verify, whether Rama’s story was right or story, whether Rama lived or not because else he would be wasting his whole life in building a monument. At least the person in whose name the monument is being created should have existed.
Understand, as long as I’m not asking you to do any seva, whatever I talk will feel like truth. If I just ask you to do some seva for 10 days, physical work or ask for little money, then you will start analyzing every word which I am uttering, whether it is truth or not because it is going to bring little pain to you. People ask why should I take up the pain, before taking up let me verify, cross-check whether it is right or wrong. Understand the Rameshwaram temple was built by hundreds of stapathis, architects and thousands of workers, at least for 200 years. And it is not that all the fellows were just following, whatever was told to them, no. They would have had enough of questions, answers, arguments, discussions, dialogues, fights, conflicts, everything. After the thorough analysis and verification that the base story is true; only then they would have built the monument. They would have verified. Not only they should they have I know for sure, they have verified. That is the reason they are able to create so much of energy. They are able to generate so much of intelligence. Time, talent, treasury, all three being directed towards those monuments. Those monuments are living proof for the authenticity of the puranas, authenticity of those great stories. They are not mythological stories, they are authentic truths. They had a great special power to look into things, to look into the things which are beyond logic, like a past life or different lives. They were able to look. Just because we are not able to look into them, when we see anything unique, or special thing which other cultures have got we just discard it by saying foolishness. Before killing the dog, call it as a mad dog, then you can always justify your action. So it’s like verifying or nailing before doing what you want to do, enquiring before itself or abusing before itself so that it’ll be easy for you later on.
There’s a beautiful statement in Nicholas’ autobiography, he says,’ Any lie told hundred times is a truth, any truth told first time is a lie’. So we are constantly told, the word puranas is translated into mythological stories - no, it is the history. It is a clear record of history with a clear date, with a clear presentation. When we see through the two eyes only we miss the experience which happens in space and time. When we understand, when we are able to look into space and time also, we’ll see the authenticity of the puranas. Dharma is like a strong law of the inner space. It is the cosmic law. Whenever you follow the dharma, you will see it continuously protects, it continuously stands, it continuously supports in so many different ways. Masters again and again happening is nothing but a strong statement to the Planet Earth, dharma is still alive.
Constitutions of the countries cannot replace the constitution of the cosmos. Constitution of the cosmos can complement the constitution of countries. If it compliments the constitution of the countries, you will see the conscious growth of the citizens is continuous and the expansion and growth in the civilization is again and again and again going towards the higher direction. It never comes down. Even by mistake if it starts coming down, again you’ll see one living Master happening and bringing it back to the cosmic constitution. That is why when the Masters wrote the Bharatn constitution, Manusmriti, constitution of Bharat in those days, thousands of years ago – they say the person who has experienced the cosmic constitution should update these records. Possibility for updating was kept open. In the Puranic tradition, they were able to see beautifully the life - past, present and future. So their record was much deeper and authentic.
Tomorrow, I think we are going to view a movie, The Myth, wonderful movie. In my whole life after the age of ten, this is the only movie which I went and sat in the theatre and watched. This is the only movie. Because the concept presented in this movie was such a wonderful concept. I saw some of the scenes are exact visualization of spiritual experience; how the past life and the present life overlap. If at all you have a past life memory, how it overlaps. It was so beautifully presented, I was really surprised, and I was even enquiring if the writer or person who prepared the script was a very strong spiritual person? Either he must have been already enlightened or highly evolved. There are many subtle truths about the past life which cannot be explained by a logical person who is analyzing past lives. Only a person who has contemplated on it can analyze. It was presented so beautifully in that movie. That is the reason when they asked me for an interview, I was very happy to offer and not only that I again and again recommend it to many of our ashramites. Whenever they have some doubt about past life, I tell them, see that movie how it is presented, in the same way the memory happens to you.
The overlapping of the memory link is not clear and straight forward. Past life memory appears like a dream when it starts, suddenly it transposes as reality. How we can see the chair, the wall with authenticity, and the memory too is visible and then the authenticity slowly starts melting down and enters into this present world. How the transition happens is very beautifully presented. My disciples ask me many questions on past life; they enquire if past life memory can be fast forwarded and rewound? I tell them it’ll be almost like overlapping. You have to look into that record and open it, then pick out the incidents which are not from the present.
One year before our Bangalore ashram started, I foretold my disciple that we’ll have land with a big banyan tree donated to us and that is where the ashram will be in Bangalore. I told them go around and search for that land. They said when you can give so many details, why don’t you give us the address itself? I told them, no, honestly I do not know. I can tell you only the details I know. This is because the past life file will not be completely clear or readable as this book is in front of me. It’ll have something like an overlapping. When you move into that vision, that’ll be completely authentic. You’ll see the information. When you slip into the waking state only the main data you’ll be able to download and bring. Not the detailed information. The detailed information’s you’ll not be able to bring with you. The maximum information you can download and bring with you is like the city name. Detailed address is not accessible. It’s like a Google earth map; you can only see to a certain level, you will not be able to see to the level of the individual address. You can see only the breadth, when you go to the depth, in that level downloading information will be little difficult. The concept of how the overlapping of the memory happens and moving from the authenticity of the past to the authenticity of the present, to authenticity of the future, that visualization is very beautifully portrayed.
Actually, there’s another movie “Tibetan Book of Dead” After seeing that I was thinking to create a visual presentation like that about Kato-Upanishad, which is the science of death. In the movie, The Myth, they were very successful in presenting some of the concepts of Kato-Upanishad visually. Though the name of Kato-Upanishad was not mentioned, but the concepts of Kato-Upanishad very presented in a very beautiful way.
Our puranas are the visual explanation of the truth which is beyond length, breadth, depth; which is happening in space and time too. That is why again and again, the dharma which is described in the puranas was questioned. Understand if at all our Masters were really up to creating heroes, there was no need for them to record the negativities for e.g. Sita was put in the fire by Rama – no, they could have created a 100% perfect hero. People come and tell me no, no, we don’t want to read this Ramayana and promote Ramayana because Sita has been abused, Sita has been put in fire by Rama, I tell them I also had the same idea. Understand, from just this one incident, we can see the authenticity, the honesty of our Masters. They were not interested in promoting Rama as a perfect hero, they are interested in recording the incident as it happened; leaving it open to be interpreted, accepted or rejected whatever we may want to do with it. This shows the honesty and authenticity of our Masters. If at all they wanted to present a very honest, a very perfect picture, they could have easily edited the script, without anyone’s knowledge; surely we did not exist at that time and see the whole thing. But Valmiki was honest. He was interested in presenting the truth and facts as they happened. History is just fact, purana is fact plus truth. A deeper level fact, the cause and effect both side of the fact is truth. History is more only a fact, mainly distorted, by just the effect. Based on the effect, the cause was distorted. But in the Vedic tradition, cause and effect was presented as it is, as it happened completely, not distorting the cause based on the effect is the honesty. Not distorting the events based on the later developments. Usually the historians seeing the later developments and the success of the person re-organize or re-write and correct the initial history. Here our purana stand for dharma, support dharma. Again and again Masters happen and declare that still our dharma is alive.
Understand this line is a technique not teaching. It is a technique for enlightenment, means it is expected to be practiced with sincerity. It is not expected to be interpreted for the sake of our practicality. Whenever something is given as a teaching, we say o.k. it is right but for my practical purpose I can adjust and come up with my own masala, no. With a technique, we can’t make masala, with teachings we can make masala, but with techniques we can’t make masala. Here Mahadeva is giving this as a technique, try. Try just for 10 days, try just for few days. Whoever you see whether it is your friend or enemy, try to retain your body heat in the same way. Try to retain the number of thoughts inside you in the same way. Try to relax without getting agitated, try to relax by coming back to the center. You will see so many new dimensions opening in you and you will be able to carry the silence which you experienced in the meditation throughout the day.
The first technique, the first teaching, the first line:
The purity of other teachings is an impurity to us; in reality know nothing as pure or impure.
This will lead you to Samadhi.
Second line: Be the same, un-same to friends as to strangers in honor and in dishonor
Will lead you to sahajasamadhi.
First line will give you the glimpse of the mukta, the mukti state; second line will give you the glimpse of the jeevan mukti state – living enlightenment. Having enlightenment is the first step; living enlightenment is the last step. Living enlightenment is the ultimate step. The second sutra will make you live enlightenment. Let you understand this technique; you cannot follow by closing the eyes. First technique you can do by closing the eyes, second technique you have to do by opening the eyes in everyday life. Let you achieve and radiate the eternal bliss, Nithyananda, thank you.
