“Inner awakening and spiritual experience can be gained through…”
Inner awakening and spiritual experience can be gained through understanding great truths. Whatever is happening is auspicious. Every experience raises our consciousness. Yoga is a continuous happening, not a goal. Enlightenment is the ultimate experience, but not the final one. Commit mistakes, but not the same ones. There is no possibility of a dream life because our ideas are constantly changing. The essence of spiritual awakening, or yoga, is the middle path. On the middle path, yoga is continuously happening. For a jeevan mukthi, the same truths which once created struggles, now create miracles. Enlightenment always happens as a satori, a spiritual experience. Shakti, simple energy to change the things which you can change. Enlightenment is when your ideas no longer create problems, but constantly give excitement. Living enlightenment means having the energy to change what you can change. Postponing is not freedom, it is deciding for the other side. Freedom without responsibility is black magic. Taking responsibility and expressing the energy is white magic. The power and status enjoyed because of taking responsibility will stay through our rebirth. If we have the intelligence and energy to change whatever we can, automatically we will accept what can not be changed. To become a philosopher continuously talk and confuse others. Existence is expressing, adding to itself, constantly changing, purely auspicious, causeless. The purpose of the civilization of Bharat is to contribute spirituality to humanity. .You will express a new identity if you can remember continuously for eleven days that reality is a changing dream.
YOGA THE CONTINUOUS HAPPENING
Compere: And now, high point of the evening ladies and gentlemen, I request Paramahamsa Nithyanandji to please begin His discourse, Yoga the continuous happening.
Sadaashiva Samaarambaam Shankaraacharya Madhyamaam | Asmadaachaarya Parayantaam Vande Guru Paramparaam ||
I welcome you all with my love and respects. I thank Mr. Aditya Ahluwali a and Mr. D.R. Kaarthikeyan and the editor of life positive magazine and all the readers for inviting me. Secondly, I think two years ago I was here, secondly.
Inner awakening and spiritual experience can be gained through understanding great truths. Yoga the continuous happening. Today I will share few understandings which really helped me to experience the truth. Few I got it from my teachers and Masters. Few I had my own by the inner struggle. But, these few understandings really helped the awakening happen in me. These few truths gave the strong experiences in me. Please understand, experiences, the strong spiritual experiences can be gained in many ways. So many paths. But if it happens through the understanding of the great truths, spiritual truths, the transmission, the sharing will be lot more easy. If it happens through the particular technique or method or devotion, the transmission may not be that easy, because, you can’t express it through the words. If it happens through the understanding, transmission is lot more easy. It’s a very subtle point. Let me try to share few words, few ideas, few truths which really awakened, gave the super conscious experience of the ultimate awakening in my inner space. Yoga, the continuous happening. We need to understand the word continuous happening. Yoga is not something like, just a physical postures or you achieve a certain goal, or you experience something and it ends there. No. When Patanjali says,
yoga chitta vritti nirodaha
Yoga is cessation of the mind, he doesn’t mean yoga ends the cessation of the mind. I can say yoga begins, yoga starts where the mind ends. Yoga never ends, it can only start. It’s a continuous happening. May be, if you understand these few truths, you will be able to understand the word continuous happening in a very strong way. Whatever is happening is auspicious. Please understand this truth. Whatever is happening is auspicious. One of my teacher used to say, this is the first truth to understand the yoga is the continuous happening. Whatever is happening is auspicioius. The first truth, whatever is happening is auspicious. Whatever you may think as inauspicious. What you may think as inauspicious, is losing wealth or losing our health or losing the life. All these things we usually think as inauspicious. Please understand, if you look at the life in a broader way, with a deeper understanding, what ever is happening is adding something to us; is adding some understanding, some experience, some richness to us. You take the whole life as a journey. Whatever is happening is adding something to us. Any experience, whether what you label, whether good or bad. Anything happening adds to your being something, adds to your inner space some juice. Some way you are more than what you were. Continuously anything happens adds to you. When something is getting added, naturally it can only be auspicious. Anything happens to our inner space, whether it is birth or death, it adds maturity. Every experience raises our consciousness. You need to understand an important truth. Every experience raises your consciousness, makes you more mature, so even losing wealth gives you some maturity. Losing health may give you some understanding. Sometime losing life helps you take up a new life, to go to a new space. See if you have strong, deep physical or mental wounds which you can’t heal, there is no other way to heal it. Then naturally you decide to completely change the space in which you are living. That decision is what I call conscious death. Even death can add, can give a, create a new possibility for you to start from the zero, from the beginning with a new inner space, new consciousness. Anything happening is auspicious. Unless you understand this truth, we can’t understand and appreciate the truth that yoga is a continuous happening. We understand yoga in many different way. First in the initial level, we understand yoga is just a physical posture. It is not, it is physical postures also, but not just a physical posture. Because it gives result in the straight way, yoga as a physical posture has become very popular. In USA alone, it’s a six billion dollar industry. Yoga is a six billion dollar industry. Unfortunately, we missed. Actually the Chinese medicine market, eighty percent of the money goes back to China. Japanese martial arts market, seventy percent money goes back to Japan. But yoga market only two percent of the money comes back to Bharat. Because we have not claimed it’s our property, we have not produced qualified teachers. We never felt it is our pride, so only two percent of the money created out of this yoga market comes back to Bharat. Anyhow, that’s the other side. Yoga is a continuous happening, not a goal. But yoga is not all about physical postures. It’s a something more than physical postures. It is not even a goal. Please understand it is not even a goal, it is a continuous happening. The word yoga exactly means uniting. We have two lives in us. One, the life which we want to live, the dream. The other the reality, the real life, the life which we are living. These two lives, meeting of these two lives is what I call yoga. Either reducing the depth of the fantasy, dreams or increasing the energy. Increasing the expression of your energy, any one has to be done, so that these two lives can meet. If you reduce the depth of the fantasy, naturally the line, your expectation, the dream line will come down. It can meet the reality. Or if you increase the energy expressed through the reality, it can raise and meet the dream line. These two lines if they meet and merge, that is what I call yoga. Continuously doing something, either to reduce the depth of the fantasy or to increase the energy which expresses in the reality, which expresses in the reality can be called as yoga. One important thing, when these two meets, what we call spiritual explosion or yoga happens. But it does not end here. It doesn’t end. Enlightenment is the ultimate experience, but not the final one. Many people ask me, ‘Swamiji, what is exactly enlightenment? What happened when you had that experience?’ Please understand, it is not something like a end. Of course surely there is an explosion, there is a very strong experience. But an important truth is it is not that after that everything has stopped. No I have not become dead. It is not that things have become dead. Every moment explosion is happening. Enlightenment is ultimate experience, but not final. It is an ultimate experience, but it not final experience. It is not final. The ultimate is happening every moment. Ultimate is being experienced continuously. Maybe the explosion can be defined as non return zone. You experience a space after which you will never have the same problems. You will never have the same problems, you will never have the same disturbances. You will never do the same mistakes. Commit mistakes, but not the same ones. Please understand, if you are in a certain mental setup, you will be committing the same mistakes. I always tell my ashramites, don’t commit same mistakes. Because the problem is not committing mistakes, committing the same mistakes. The mind has not evolved. You will not be committing the same mistakes. You will not be having the same sufferings. You will not be having the same disturbances. It will be totally different. The experiences, expressions everything will be totally different. That break through point can be called as yoga, or enlightenment, or awakening whatever word you may use. But it is not ending there. It doesn’t end. It is a continuous happening. I am just trying to present few truths from my experience. Maybe when you put your questions, if you have doubt, then we will go little deeper so that you maybe able to internalize. You may be able to internalize what I am trying to express. Continuous happening, it’s like a awakening to the reality. Not the end. Usually yoga is understood as you master some postures or you achieve a particular state. It is neither mastering some postures nor achieving particular state. Awakening to the continuous happening. See whatever is happening around you is yoga. Whatever is happening inside you is yoga. As I mentioned, the dream line, the idea which you have about how your life should be and the reality. The life of reality. Either you bring this line to this line or you take this line to this line, yoga starts happening. Yoga starts expressing itself through you. There is no possibility of a dream life because our ideas are constantly changing. Person who takes this line to that line, means trying to express more energy from the reality. Trying to raise your what you call as real life to the dream level. I can say, I can use the word, roughly materialist who is trying to express in the reality, so that he can reach what he dreams. But the problem is if you try to travel few steps towards the dream, the dream is running. If you are running towards the goal, one day you will achieve. But the goal is also running away, what will you do? If you are running towards the goal and if the goal is stagnant, you will achieve it. But the goal is also continuously moving, your dreams are continuously changing. Your visions are continuously changing, your ideas are continuously changing, then there is no possibility of you reaching the dream, of you reaching what we call as a dream life. Person who is trying to raise, who is trying to express the energy from the reality and trying to reach the dream level is materialist. And the person who is trying to reduce the depth of the fantasies and trying to bring the line, this reality line, you may call him as a religious person or he is taking up the ascetic life, or renunciation. But an important truth, both are not going to exactly help. Both are not going to exactly help. We need the deeper understanding, because neither renunciation leads to the truth, nor continuously trying to express more and more energy, trying to achieve the dreams is leading to the truth. It’s like a very subtle game. I can say this is where the Buddha’s idea, the middle path comes to the help. Middle path, the idea of middle path which we need to understand. Maybe that will awaken, that idea of middle path will give you more detail or few truths.
The essence of spiritual awakening, or yoga, is the middle path. The essence of awakening or the essence of yoga can be called as middle path. Let me put it in these few words. What I experienced or what I feel the essence of middle path. The shakti to change whatever you can and buddhi to accept whatever you can’t change and yukthi, yukthi means understanding, that however you change, the existence itself is a continuous changing dream. Living all these three continuously in your life is mukthi. Please understand, energy to change whatever you can, shakti. Buddhi, intelligence to accept whatever you can’t change. Yukthi, understanding, to realize however you change, the whole thing, however you try, the whole reality is a continuous changing dream. Living all these three is what I call mukthi. Mukthi, jeevan mukthi is not a particular experience which will happen at some point, after that nothing needs to be done. Or it’s like a end, and your goal is achieved. You are retired, you are dead, nothing, no. Continuously living all these three. Radiating all these three. Usually, people have an idea, enlightenment is almost like a retirement. After that you don’t need to make any decisions. Or you don’t need to do any strategy planning. You don’t need to do anything which requires life energy. No. Please understand, that is what I mean by the word, yoga is a continuous happening. On the middle path, yoga is continuously happening. In every level, yoga is continuously happening. After a strong explosion, or cognitive shift also, yoga will be continuously happening, in a different dimension. I can say in the initial level, you will be struggling to create the energy to change whatever you can change, to create the intelligence to accept whatever you can’t change. And understanding however you change, the whole thing is just changing dream. In the initial level you may be struggling with these truths. After that strong explosion, you may not struggle with the truths, but you will be living it. Understand, living means, continuously these truths will be radiating through you. You will radiating them. You will be continuously adding to that truth. You will be continuously adding more and more incidents, more and more support to the truth. I am trying to describe exactly what I experienced, what I understood. First we struggle with these few truths. Then when it becomes experience, when the cognitive shift happens, we don’t keep quiet. It is not that we become completely silent or we become dead or we become dull. No. Every moment we add value to this truth. We are living this truth. We are excited by this truth. First let you understand the energy to change whatever you can change. Before the enlightenment, you may be struggling to express the energy whatever you can change, but after that explosion, you will not be struggling to express energy through you, but you will be continuously adding more and more positive incidents, saying, ‘Yes this is truth. I am expressing it.’ Those incidents is what I call miracles. Understand, the same truths if you are struggling with it, you are a seeker. If you are creating miracles out of it, you are enlightened. But something will be continuously happening. For a jeevan mukthi, the same truths that once created struggles now create miracles. The same truths, the same ideas, if they are creating struggles in you, conflicts in you, you are a seeker. If they are creating miracles in you, you are enlightened. You are you. Same truths, before and after, there won’t be difference in the truths. There will be difference in your experience. And one more thing I want to tell you, I want all of you to understand, please understand, all the truths will not become miracle at a time. First you may be having hundred ideas, hundred ideas will be creating hundred struggles in you. Don’t think, suddenly over night at one moment all the hundred ideas will create hundred miracles in you. No. Maybe ten ideas will start creating ten miracles and ninety ideas will be creating struggles in you. This is what I call the living enlightenment period. The period of Jeevan mukthi, when you live the enlightenment. Please understand, Jeevan mukthi does not mean the end. It’s living enlightenment. First hundred ideas you will listen. Shravana, in Vedanta we have beautiful three words, shravana, manana, nidhidhyasana. Listening and continuously remembering, remembering and living. When you listen to these truths, you will start struggling. If you listen to hundred ideas, you will be struggling with all the hundred ideas. Slowly when you remember, in this hundred, ten will become the ideas which start creating miracles in you. The ideas which become experience in you. For example, you listen to an idea, if you are thinking positively, things will happen positively. One idea. First in the initial level you will start struggling to think positively. You will have naturally struggle, maybe for few days. Suddenly one day you start thinking positively, you realize something has happened in a very positive way, means you have experienced the truth. The idea which was a struggle in your inner space has become miracle now, in your inner space. So the same way, hundred ideas, with hundred ideas if you are struggling, suddenly one fine morning, ten ideas will become miracles. The remaining ninety ideas will continue to be struggle. After sometime, maybe some fifty ideas will be miracles and fifty ideas will be continuously the struggling point. You will be struggling. Please do not think anybody who is in the planet earth for whom all the hundred ideas are only miracles. No. No. Please understand even after the explosion, even after the explosion, they may not have the same hundred ideas. See for example, you are having hundred ideas, ten have become miracle and ninety if you are, with ninety you are continuously struggling. In course, at some point, explosion happens. After the explosion, after that experience, you will not have the all the hundred ideas whether it becomes a miracle or it becomes your struggle. You will completely drop all the hundred. You will have something else, something else happening in you. But don’t think only if all the hundred has become miracle, I will become enlightened. These are some of the important, technical truths which really stops us from enlightenment. Please understand, which really stops us from enlightenment. I am working with hundreds of seekers, you can say thousands, thousands of seekers. And, I know for sure life positive readers are all seekers. Enlightenment always happens as a satori, a spiritual experience. The very subtle struggles which I am facing with the seekers, when I am try to help the seekers. Only those few subtle struggles I am sharing. Usually we think all the hundred points if they become miracles in us, experience in us, only then we become enlightened. No. Even at thirty forty, the explosion may happen. The problem is, when you don’t recognize some strong cognitive shift has happened in me, you forget that you had a strong experience and you stop nourishing, enriching that experience. See, please understand, always enlightenment happens to you as a satori. Means there is a possibility that you may forget. The first experience always has the potentiality that you can forget. The possibility that you can forget. If you have scale about enlightenment, you will not recognize the first experience as a strong experience, you will not allow that to flourish, that to grow, that to flower in your inner space. So anything if it happens, allow it. Do not have a judgmental attitude. Do not have that perfectionist attitude. Do not have; and the other one big problem is we have consultants, some books or somebody’s experiences. That is another one big disturbance, a big problem. I can say each idea which has become part of you; as I was telling shravana, manana, nidhidhyasana. Any idea when you listen it will be a struggle, when you contemplate, it will become a experience. When you start living it, every moment you live that idea, you add one miracle to your life. That is what I call nidhidhyasana. The ideas which comes towards you, when it was struggle it is shravana. When you just try to contemplate, work on it, it is manana. When it becomes experience, it is nidhidhyasana. When it becomes experience, every time, you recollect that idea you add one miracle to your life. Every time you live that idea, you add one more miracle to your life. You don’t have to think, all the ideas which you receive should add miracles to you, only then you are enlightened. No. Even if thirty forty ideas have become experience in you, a strong explosion can happen in you. Enlightenment is when your ideas no longer create problems, but constantly give excitement. One important truth, after that explosion all the hundred problems will disappear, it will not be there. It will not be there. After that you will have different kind of understandings. I don’t want to use problem word. After that what you have may not be problem. Maybe the expression of compassion. Expression of compassion. But don’t think you will become completely dead, dull. You don’t need to do any strategy planning. You don’t need to do anything, you will be completely retired. No. You will be living the enlightenment. So basically yoga starts when you start struggling with the tools which you receive. You are a yogi when you are able to live that ideas. You are an enlightened being. You are a Jeevan mukta if those ideas are adding miracles to your life. If those ideas are constantly giving you the excitement. Any satya when it is received, when you start living it, when it becomes your life, it adds continuously miracles in your life. Every moment you see miracles happening. Every moment you see excitement happening. These few truths if you can internalize and understand, I can say for sure, so many struggles, unnecessary struggles in your path will be taken away. Living enlightenment means having the energy to change what you can change. See the main struggle, in the path is unable to recognize the truth when it happens as an experience. Unable to understand the goal, unable to understand the path, unable to understand the next what needs to be done. Please understand, even if few truths have become your experience, and you start living them, and you accept something solid is happening in you, you will see, you are living enlightenment. You are living as a Jeevan mukta. As I described with these few words, the energy to change whatever you can change, shakti. Buddhi, intelligence to accept whatever you can’t change or whatever you don’t need to change. Maybe I can give some examples. Energy to change whatever you can change, shakti. Understand, in your day to day life, so many things which we can change, which we can work and change. But, neither you have interest, nor enthusiasm to change. Many time even though you know this can be changed, this suffering can be avoided, just the simple decision, you are not that interested to take those few decisions. Postponing is not freedom, it is deciding for the other side. Simple decisions can change so many things in our life, we don’t take those decisions. We just wait or continuous postponing. I can say that is one of the worst curse, for any seeker, continuously postponing. Continuously postponing. We don’t understand, not awakening to the purpose of the life. When we are not awakened to the purpose of the life, we continue to postpone. The postponing gives a kind of a joy. It give a kind of a, we think postponing is our freedom. Please understand, postponing is not a freedom. For example, a doctor suggests an operation, surgery, if you are postponing to take the decision whether to go through the surgery or not, you are deciding not to go through the surgery. Please understand, if you are postponing whether to have surgery or not, you are deciding not to have the surgery. So any postponement, if you are postponing, don’t think you are not deciding, you are deciding for the other side. The decision is being made for the other side. So anything you are postponing, that laziness, naturally, makes you decide for the other thing, for the other side, for the other side of the coin, other side of the subject. Shakti is the energy to change the things which you can change.
One person came to me few days before. He asked me, ‘Swamiji, I am caught with some bad habits. Please stop me.’ I told him. I sat with him, spent some time and after the advise, I said, now drop. He said, ‘No, no, no. You only have to stop.’ I asked him, ‘What do you mean? You want me to take your car keys and hide it so that you will not go to the same place again? What do you mean? You are intelligent enough. I can add only understanding to your inner space. But digesting that and expressing it is in your hands.’ He said, ‘No, no, you are all powerful, change me.’ If you come with that attitude, I can take your keys and hide it, that’s what I can do. Nothing else can be done. See, you want one side, the freedom, the other side you don’t want to take up the responsibility for the freedom.
Freedom without responsibility is black magic. We don’t want to take the responsibility for the freedom which we are demanding. Just trying to have more and more freedom, but not being responsible for the freedom. That’s what I call chaos, confusion, creating confusion. When you, when you don’t take the responsibility, but find some methods to acquire power, just the energy, it is called black magic. Please understand, there are so many CEOs who are black magicians, who don’t achieve the state of a leader, but achieve the status of a leader. Black magic does not mean just materializing something or hypnotizing something. If you are sitting in a seat for which you have not taken the responsibility, you are a black magician. Taking responsibility and the expressing the energy is white magic. White magic means, taking the responsibility and the energy. Black magic means, not taking the responsibility, only taking the power. Even in our lives, many of us are playing black magic. We are doing black magic in our own life, forget about somebody else’s life, even in our life, we are taking black magic. We do, continue to do black magic. People come and tell me, ‘No, somebody has done black magic.’ Don’t bother, nobody needs to do, we are enough to do black magic on us. You don’t need some other entity. You don’t need somebody else to come and do black magic on us. Whenever you feel there is black magic look into it, this is the definition of black magic. Not taking the responsibility, just taking the power. In any plane, this is the definition of black magic. If you have not become mature, but you are empowered, you are a black magician. Whether it is in a company or inner world or outer world, anywhere. In outer world also we have so many black magicians. In the outer world when black magic happens, the politics start growing, starts growing. The person who has not achieved the status, just achieved the state; who has not achieved the; sorry, who has not achieved the inner space, who has not achieved the state of a leader, who has not become responsible to become a leader, if he can just gets the power, he is black magician. Wherever he is there will be chaos. If it is in the field of the industry, he becomes CEO and so much of back biting and all these things starts. If it is in the field of the politics then he again becomes a political leader. And so much of politics happens around him. This is the definition of black magic. You can use this definition in any field. But this is the definition. The power and status enjoyed because of taking responsibility will stay through our rebirth. If you take the responsibility and the power happens to you, naturally it will be eternal, the power which will stay with you forever. It’s an achievement. Even if this body goes, even if this body leaves, you will not be losing that power. Please understand, if all the power which you acquired, if all the status which you are enjoying are because of your responsibility, because of your understanding, because of the quality of your being, you will not have the fear of death, because even if your body dies, you will continue to take birth with the same state. The next birth, you will take exactly where you left. Exactly where you left, you will start your next birth. So you don’t have to be afraid of your death. Death will not change anything. If you, see, we are all afraid, ‘Oh God, thirty years I worked, I became CEO. If I die, again I will have to take birth. Who knows whether I will get this kind of opportunities. Who knows whether I will have this kind of all possibilities and opportunities around me, like this good family and so many things. This is what makes us worry. Understand, if the status which you are enjoying is because of the state, the responsibility which you have taken, because of your inner space, you don’t have to worry. Even if you leave the body, you will continue to be in the same space. Your next body, next birth will be in the same space, will be in the same level, will be in the same situation, because it is the gift from the cosmos. It is because of your quality, you are in that seat. If it is not because of your quality, naturally, even while you are living, you have to continue to struggle to hold on to that chair and it will be continuous suffering. So if you achieve, if you take the responsibility, if you express the energy to change whatever you can. That’s what I call shakti. If you express the shakti, to change whatever you can, you don’t have to worry about the death, because, wherever you take birth you will express that energy. This is what beautifully Krishna describes as yogaprashta. In the Gita, he says, he uses the word, beautiful word yogaprashta. Yogaprashta means, the person who is, who tried to achieve the enlightenment, but who has died in between, in middle of his journey. Krishna says beautifully, he will take birth and start the journey from where he left. Start the journey from where he left. The same thing applies, whether it is outer world or inner world, whatever you are enjoying if it is out of your maturity, if it is out of your responsibility, if it is because of the state of your being, please understand, it can never leave you. Even if you leave the body, it won’t leave you. If you are living with that clarity, you are a jeevan mukta. You are a Jeevan mukta. Understand, the shakti to change whatever you can, just simple things which you can change. Put your energy. Don’t bother, ‘Oh, I can change two habits, what about the other ten?’ Don’t bother. Just change what you can change. Then you can go for accepting what you can’t change. When you have expressed your shakti, the next buddhi will start flowering. If we have the intelligence and energy to change whatever we can, automatically we will accept what can not be changed. Buddhi means accepting whatever you can’t change. But till you express the energy to change whatever you can change, you will not be able to have buddhi to accept whatever you can’t change. People tell me, ‘Swamiji, you teach acceptance. I accept whatever I am as I am.’ I tell them, ‘No, you will never be able to do that.’ First change whatever you can, finish. Then you will see, the tremendous acceptance to accept whatever you can’t change will happen in you. First that is why, even Patanjali starts with satya, asteya, aparigraha. The five important vows, brahmacharya, satya, ahimsa, asteya, aparigraha. Please understand, no one will be able to have the complete perfection in these five vows. If you think, I will first finish these five. This is the first part, the yama, in the Patanjali’s yoga, yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahaara, dhaarana, samaana. The eight steps. No, steps is not right, steps is not the right word. The eight parts. If you say, first I will finish this and then I will go to the second, you will never be able to move. Please understand, then you may ask, ‘Then why Patanjali says, this as the first, first step?’ First try to change whatever you can through these five vows. Then comes acceptance. Then buddhi. I don’t think, anybody can do first, first step, second, second step, third, third step. No. All the eight has to be simultaneously practiced. No. That is why Patanjali calls as ashtaanga. It is not ashtapadi. It is ashtaanga. It is not eight steps, it is eight limbs, eight parts. It means all the eight has to be practiced at the same time, simultaneously. When you first try to change. When you express the maximum energy to change then the intelligence, to accept whatever you can’t change will start happening. The buddhi to accept whatever you can’t change will start happening. First shakti to change whatever you can change, next buddhi to accept whatever you can’t change. Third, yukthi, the clarity. However you change, whatever you change the whole world itself is a changing reality. It is a changing dream. The continuously changing. It is a dream, which is continuously changing for no reason. Just for no reason, it’s causeless. Understand, it is causeless. Because it is causeless, either you can call it as a causeless auspicious energy or causeless chaos. Anybody who thinks this is a causeless auspicious energy is a theist, a seeker. Anybody who thinks it is a causeless chaos, is a communist, a materialist. That’s all. Aethist. If you think because it is causeless, it is the reasonless, auspicious energy. The word Shiva, if you see the dictionary meaning, it is a causeless auspiciousness. That is the exact translation. Shiva means causeless auspiciousness. The whole thing is a causeless dream. You cannot find the cause, at least with your logic, the logic with which we are playing, we cannot find the cause. There is no reason. You may try to develop as many theories as possible, as many reasons as possible. The more number of ideas and reasons you give, you become a better philosopher. That’s all. But, all philosophers have their own doubts. It means, your logic, your reason has no use. To become a philosopher continuously talk and confuse others. Actually I can give you few tips how to become a philosopher. Whatever confusion you carry, give it as answers to others, that’s all. No. these are few ideas. Whatever confusions you carry, give it as an answers to others and never give solutions. Continuously talk, talk, talk, expand, expand, expand on problem. Expand on problem and whatever confusions you carry, give it as answers to others and never give solution. You will become a ultimate philosopher. How to become philosopher. These are the few ideas, because logic cannot give the, logic cannot measure, cannot give the ultimate solution, cannot express the truth. Either you can understand it is a causeless auspiciousness. If you understand it is a causeless auspiciousness, you are Shiva. You dance like a Shiva, you enjoy everything, because it is a causeless auspiciousness. Existence is expressing, adding to itself, constantly changing, purely auspicious, causeless. Whatever is happening, it’s like a, you know, existence is adding to itself. It is living, it is expressing. Energy is expressing. It’s a, there is no cause. It is pure auspiciousness. You can look in the other side, you can look through the other way. Look through the other side, from the other side. You can say it is a causeless chaos. Then you become materialist. You continuously abuse, disrespect, everything. Either whole existence can become a miracle or it can become a curse. If you think it is a causeless auspiciousness, it is a miracle. A continuous miracle, or it’s a curse. Anyway you can look. Anyway, it is causeless continuously changing dream. For no reason, it is changing. You don’t know. Please be very clear, there is no scale that you are sitting and listening to the discourse. You may be lying in your bed in the house and dreaming as if you have come to the life positive expo and sitting with Swamiji and listening to him. You don’t know. You may wake up after ten minutes, ‘Oh, God. I thought I should go to the discourse, and rested. Now only I understood, I am dreaming.’ There is no scale. You may say, ‘No, no, no, no, no. Not only I am seeing. This person is sitting next to me, he is also seeing you. My friends are also seeing you. How can this be a dream?’ Please understand, for example, if you are sleeping in Delhi, in dream you are in Bangalore, with your family. Not only you will be seeing the Bangalore, the family which you see in your dream also will be seeing Bangalore, the same Bangalore. It means what? The person whom you are seeing in the dream also will be seeing the same dream. So there is no scale that the people who are sitting next to you are in reality or the expressions of your own dream. Understand, this truth is called avastaatraya in Vedanta. It brings tremendous inner healing. I can tell you this one technique. Just try to remember this one technique to continuously. You will understand what I mean by the word yoga is a continuous happening. Yoga is a continuous happening. Just this one technique. I don’t even want to call this as a technique. One understanding. Whatever is happening, whatever is seen by you, or experienced by you is a changing dream. Remember this one truth. Please understand you have heard enough of words. You have heard enough of words. I think Bharat’s big problem is we know too much. That is what is wrong. Not that we don’t know. Actually, a farmer in Bharat, if you go to the farmer, villager, he knows more philosophy than a doctorate in American universities, because the land of intelligence. The purpose of the civilization of Bharat is to contribute spirituality to humanity. Dr. Kartikeyan put it in the right way. The backbone of Bharat is spirituality. Our whole energy is spent in this line. Our whole energy, our forefathers, everything, our whole country is built for this. Please understand, each civilization contributes something to the humanity. Each civilization. Our whole civilization is developed for this purpose. The purpose of the inner research. The research in the inner world, R & D in the inner world. That is why you can see, millions of inner world scientists, rishis. And please understand if you see the population, the Hindu religion, the Vedic tradition, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, all the religions which came out of the Vedic tradition, it is one third, one third only. But if you see the monastic numbers, means people who sacrificed their lives for the inner science, for the research and development of the inner science it’s three times more than the world’s largest religions. The monks and nuns and the people who renounced their lives. They are only one third of the humanity’s population. But the people who renounced the lives. I am not saying, I am not talking about the monks and swamis who are in the street side. I am talking about the registered organizations. The registered organizations, the service or the spiritual organizations. The social service organizations like Acharya Sabha, Chinmaya mission, Ramakrishna mission and all, like this missions. I am talking only about that number. I am not adding the swamis, wandering, monks, monastics, ascetics, I am not talking about them. Only this number is three times more than the world’s largest religions, monks and nuns, are the people who are. Because our whole tradition, the whole Vedic tradition, this whole country is built for this and I don’t know how many lakhs of temples and monasteries we have in Bharat, where congregation happens everyday. Please understand we know too much, because in our country, even in the air, this whole knowledge is available. I don’t want to add more words to you. I don’t want to add more words to you and adding more words means more confusion. May be this one technique. If you take this one idea and try to play with this idea, I can say, what I wanted to offer, I have offered. What you can take from me you have taken it. This one idea, just for the next eleven days, try for this next eleven days. Whatever is happening in front of you, you are experiencing, is a changing dream. Just remember this, that’s all. Nothing else needs to be done. Just remember this and continue your dream. You will express a new identity if you can remember continuously for eleven days that reality is a changing dream. One important thing, any idea which you are continuously remembering whole day for eleven days will penetrate your dream state. It will go into your dream state. Continuously for eleven days, if you think you are a doctor, of course you are a lawyer by profession, if you remember you are a doctor, you are a doctor, you are a doctor for eleven days, in the dreams, you will see you as a doctor. Within eleven days, that idea will penetrate your dream state. If you want to change your identity, eleven days is enough. You will start expressing that new identity. Just for eleven days, remember this idea. Constantly remember, that whole thing, whatever you are seeing is a changing reality, is a changing dream. Anything you see, is just one more dream. Continuously remember. I will tell you, if this idea penetrates your inner being, the dream state, you will have a tremendous healing effect over your being. You will not be emotionally shaken, disturbed continuously. Now every moment we are bombarded by anything happens around us. This one idea if it penetrates your inner space, especially your dream state. Means, in the dream when you are dreaming, you should remember, you are dreaming. If you remember you are dreaming in the dream, you will be awakened. If that happens, at least once. If you are continuously remembering this idea for eleven days, it will happen. This one experience is enough, you will be tremendously balanced in your day to day life, in your day to day activity. You will start seeing these ideas, these truths becoming part of your life. Try to take this one idea, may be eleven days you will be struggling. Once it becomes part of your inner space, you will see this idea continuously adds miracles to your life. I had given this technique to one of my disciples. Told him to practice. His experience is I want to share with you. He says, ‘Swamiji, first eleven days, I was continuously struggling. Once I had the glimpse of the truth. After that, even while I am stopped at the signal, if I think let this signal change, this signal change in the dream, I see very clearly miracles happening around me. Just simple signal changes. I am able to play with it. I am not able to play with the stopping the rain.’ No, I am not telling you to stop the rain or bring the rain. I am not telling you to do that. But if you play with this idea, you will start seeing continuously miracles in your life. If this idea becomes experience in you, this one idea, that whatever is happening around you is a dream, please understand, suddenly you will see you will have the energy to change what you think as reality. First thing, first you will have energy to make your dreams into reality. Then you will have the realization, reality itself is a dream. Any one happens, the other will happen. If you have the shakti to change your dreams as reality. You will have buddhi to realize, that reality itself is a one more dream. If you have buddhi, to realize the reality is a dream, you will have shakti to change the dreams into reality. It’s a virtuous circle. You may have heard only the word vicious circle. This is a virtuous circle. One will add to the other. One will add to the other. Have shakti to change your dreams into reality. You will have buddhi to realize, that reality itself is one more dream. And have the buddhi to realize the reality is a one more dream, you will have shakti to change the dream into reality. Start with buddhi, because it is lot more easy. Start with buddhi, it is lot more easy. Remember for the next eleven days, continuously, that whatever you are seeing in front of you is one more dream, is a dream and you will see, only once you need to see. Have that, you need to remember that idea in your dream. If you are remembering that idea in your dream, means it has penetrated your inner space. It has gone into your inner space and after that you will see, everyday, whenever you remember this idea, you will see a miracle in your life. You will see something change in front of you, which you thought you will never be able to change, will start changing. So first the truth, satya, comes to you as a idea, then it becomes a struggle, then it becomes a life, then it becomes miracle. Please understand, same satya, when it reaches your inner space, it’s a struggle. When it becomes your life, it’s a life. When it becomes your consciousness, it’s a miracle. Shravana, manana, nidhidhyasana. When you are listening, it’s a struggle, when you are doing manana, it’s a life. When you are living it, it’s a Jeevan mukti. So you would have heard enough, enough of ideas. Actually when I came here, I didn’t feel like adding any words. First I thought, I will directly get into the question answer. I thought as a ritual, I have to say few words. Then I can spend some time with you. So, I have expressed few truths, few ideas, from my experience. Now I welcome your questioning. Maybe through this questioning, you will be able to internalize these ideas in a deeper way. So I welcome your questions exactly to this idea, so that we will internalize these ideas in a very strong way, in a very deeper way.
Compere: Thank You Swamiji. Thank you so much for a truly lively discourse and truly illumining understandings and I am sure all of us if we start here right in front, and I will start right now internalizing this wonderful thought. Maybe we will start right now internalizing this wonderful talk. Maybe I have couple of questions with me, Swamiji, with your permission.
Yes, yes, please. First my question. Time? How much time we can take?
Compere: No problem, Swamiji. We can go on for some more time.
Ok.
Compere: What is the connection between dhyan and meditation? How do we bring them in our day to day life, and.
What is the connection between?
Compere: Dhyan and meditation. How do we bring it to our day to day life and live it to manage our day to day life?
Please understand, I am; technically the word dhyan is only translated as meditation. Recently I have seen that some of the western Masters have started using different words for dhyan. But whenever I mean, I use the word meditation I mean dhyan. I am using the word meditation for the word dhyan. So both are one and the same. Dhyan and meditation. D H Y A N, dhyan and meditation are one and the same. If you are using the word gnan. Then it is intelligence. As for the word, dhyan, D H Y A N it is meditation. How we can bring it in our day to day life and manage our day to day life? Please understand, if you are managing your day to day life, you are doing dhyan. Anything you do to manage your day to day life is dhyan. Let me define the dhyan in a broader sense, the ideas which you carry in you to do the self healing. If you are hurt, disturbed, depressed, forlorn, anything you use to bring you back, I can call, I can use the word, it can be dhyan. Please understand, this is a broader view about the dhyan. Maybe if I have to say specifically, maybe this one idea I can give, one idea I have expressed. Whatever is happening in front of you, happening with you inside and outside, just remember it’s a dream. If you are constantly remembering this idea, it’s a dhyan. Please understand, remembering this idea, will not, it will not be just silent, dull remembrance. When you remember this, naturally your decisions will change. Your understandings will change. The cognitive shift will happen. Your way in which you think, the way in which you act, the way in which you conduct yourself, the way in which you express yourself, everything will change. So any one idea, if it is remembered by you and if it transforms your life and if you are able to manage your life, that is dhyan. There are so many techniques. I can say sitting and doing at a particular time. Those things also can be called, may be we can use the word meditation technique for them. Meditation means which becomes part of your inner space, twenty four hours a day. Meditation technique means which you need to do at particular time. There are so many kriyas, meditation techniques. I have also coined a meditation technique called Nithya Dhyan. Maybe you can get a CD and practice. We will not be able to do it today. Or you can see in our website, you can download the technique and try to practice. That’s meditation technique. But meditation means, continuously trying to digest any one satya. Any one truth. See, in our inner space we have so many ideas which can heal us, which can bring us back to live the life. The exact definition of life positive. Trying to stand up again. Trying to see the life in a very positive way again. So there are so many self healing thoughts, self healing truths. If you are remembering those truths and living them, you are doing dhyan. So add, I call, I use this technical word, shaastra shastras. Knowledge weapons. Convert all the shaastras into shastras and keep it inside so that you can fight depression, you can fight depression, whenever it comes. Shaastra shastras, the knowledge weapons. So, if you are continuously using knowledge weapons you are doing dhyan. You are doing dhyan. This is what is the essence of the spiritual life.
Compere: Swamiji, before we move on to the next question, this is a little urgent announcement. There were two cars which are blocking the traffic outside, and it is a serious situation. DN9CJ0220 and DN3CAB1524. I repeat DN9CJ0220 and DN3CAB1524. If any of these vehicles belong to you, please take them and park them in the correct place. Compere: We move back to our question answer session. Compere: Swamiji how does one know and how does one identify the true Master to follow through whose enlightenment one could achieve our goal of finding self?
This is an important question. I think even your panel discussions are on this subject. I saw in the invitation. Please understand, true Master. This is a, I can say this is a FAQ. Wherever I go I face this question. This question is the frequently asked question. Please understand, if your heart feels connected, your heart is intelligent than what you think you are. Please understand your heart is much more than what you think as you. Your heart really has an intelligence. If it feels connected, even if he is not enlightened, he is your Master, don’t bother about it. Even if he is not enlightened, he is your Master. If your heart feels connected, catch! If your heart feels connected, even a stone can become God to you. That is what has happened in the Ramakrishna’s case! Just a black image, three feet black image! If you go and see you will be surprised. It is not even tall, just a three feet black image, Kaali! Ramakrishna became enlightened! Mahaavatar, the avataara purusha, just with the three feet image, a stone has become God. You will be surprised, if you read Ramakrishna’s life, all the stories. He used to put a small thread and see whether she is breathing really or not. And he says the thread used to move by the air. Of course too mystical. Not just this one incident, so many incidents. There, she will be wearing conch bangle, unbroken conch bangle. Somebody asked, how did you put that. He says, Ramakrishna says, ‘No I told her to drop the head.’ She is holding the head, the severed head in the left hand. ‘I told her to drop the head and put the bangles, then I told her again to hold that, and she started holding that’s all’. See the genes of the materialism has completely; you can’t understand. And he says, still you can see, if you go to Dakshineshwar towards this; you can will see a unbroken conch bangle put by Ramakrishna. In those days, they used to allow sadhus inside. I went there. I really saw, I checked the bangle. I wanted to, I was really curious, how can this be. And the head is too big. It is a single marble piece, but the bangle is there. So if your heart feels connected, even a stone can become God. He will guide you. Please understand, through Him, you will achieve. Don’t bother. If your heart doesn’t feel connected, even if he is enlightened, he can’t help. Understand, even if he is enlightened, he cannot help. So it is not the question, whether he is enlightened or not, it is a question of whether your heart feels connected or not. If your heart feels connected. One more thing, if you are a seeker, if you are seeking, if there is a enlightened being, you don’t even need introduction. You don’t need introduction. There is no other scale. There is no other scale. Please understand, there is no other scale to measure! Anything is duplicable. There is no such thing as non portable in this field. Everything is duplicable. You can’t say miracles is the standard of enlightenment. No, there are so many magicians who can do much better miracles than Swamis. There are so many magicians who. There is no scale. Only one scale. Your heart feeling connected. Suddenly you will see, that something is happening inside you. When you sleep you will be just waiting, when I will get up next day morning, I can see him, or I can see his photograph or I can see his book or someway I can be connected to him. So every thing, every breath you will suddenly see there is a deep connection. That is the only, that is the only scale. Till that happens, continue to seek. If that happens, then things are over. Things are done. That’s all. That’s the only scale I can say. There is no other scale. Everything else can be, anything whatever you can call it as a standard or a Jeevan mukta lakshana. In the Gita, Krishna says, the Jeevan mukta lakshana. See the big problem is Arjuna is sitting in front of Krishna, the avataara purusha, the purnaavatara. Even he asks the question to Krishna. He asks to Krishna, what is the lakshana of the avataara purusha, that means what he wants to measure Krishna. That is what he feels, he wants to measure, tell me the Jeevan mukta lakshana, I want to measure whether you are up to that mark. That is the big problem, what to do. There is no scale. There is no scale. See when Krishna defines, naturally he defines the scale which he understands, which he will be expressing in his life. So if somebody else, if Rama defines he will be expressing in a different way. If Mahavira defines he will be expressing in a different way. If Buddha defines, he will be expressing in a different way. So there is no scale, you can’t say enlightened man will be a sanyasi. You can’t say an enlightened man will be a married person. There is no scale. There is no scale. If you ask Buddha what he will say, even if you are married, escape. That’s what he will tell. If you ask Mahavira, what he will tell, ‘Once is ok.’ If you ask Krishna what he will say, ‘Any number is ok. Just forget the number, that’s all.’ So each one will have their own. Just forget the count, that’s all. So, each one will have their own definition. There is no scale. Only one thing I can tell you, fool proof method, your heart feeling connected. Your heart is much more intelligent than your head. Your head asking some scale will never solve the problem. It can never solve the problem, because any scale you give you can give the reference from the other side. If I say all enlightened Masters are unmarried, you can say Ramakrishna is married, what to do. I can say all enlightened Masters are grhastas, Ramana Maharishi is unmarried. So there is no scale. There is no scale. Only your heart feeling connected, that’s all. And one more thing, if your heart feels connected to the Master who has left the body, don’t bother, he himself will guide you to the person who is in the body. They are, see, Masters are not absent as you think. They are neither present as you think. Masters are not present as you think, as you understand. They are neither absent as you understand. When they are living in the body, their absence has a body. When they are not in the body, their presence has no body. So, they are neither absent, nor present. So if you try to judge them by their presence or absence, you are in trouble. Heart feeling connected is the only scale. No other scale, no other thing can be given as a scale.
Compere: Swamiji I will read the question which says, is having a Guru or Master a precondition to achieve self realization. Is it a pre condition to have a Guru? Is it a must or can you achieve self realization even without one?
This is another one big problem. You can achieve without the Master also. But you can’t achieve. I can say too difficult. Too difficult. See, the argument that you can achieve without the Master. The idea you can achieve the truth without the Master is given to the disciples who are unable to connect with the Master. It’s like a second rate solution. See, if you have to connect with the Master, at some level, at some degree, at some point, you have to give up your ego, some adjustment is required. Even to live with a, live in a house, to live with a husband or wife you need to adjust. When it comes to surrender, the ultimate happening, the enlightenment, lot of things need to be adjusted. When people don’t have that much of maturity, they tend not to enter into the path at all. Then you give them the solution, no, no, no, even without the Master you can achieve, carry on. At least have inspiration. It’s like a secondary solution. That’s all I can say. But ultimately, I don’t think I am not able to see a single person who has achieved without the Master. I tried to go through the history and practical experiences every way, all possible ways. Even if they did not have a Master of their caliber, for example, Ramakrishna never had a Master of his caliber, his expression. But he had a Master, who helped his own enlightenment. See, after Ramakrishna’s enlightenment, what he expressed, his expression, he never had a Master of his caliber, that caliber. But he had a Master who helped his enlightenment. So, sometime the expression of the disciple becomes so strong the name of the Master never gets recorded in the history. Same way with Ramana Maharishi, the people who helped Ramana Maharishi, was never of his caliber, so naturally the Guru title. They may not hold the Guru title in the history, but from my experience I tell you every Master had somebody who was an inspiration, who was an instrument who was a guide, who was Guru and a teacher. In my life also, people who helped me, they did not create an organization. They did not create a Sangha as I did. But that does not mean, I did not have a Guru. Maybe in the history, in course of time, their names will not be so shining like my name, because I created an organization. Because I have a Sangha, my name will be little bold typed in my biography. Their names may not be represented. But that does not mean I did not have a Master. So please understand, at least, I can say as far as I know, there is no Master who did not have a Master.
Compere: Swamiji, again related to please tell us something about your Guru and your relationship with your Guru.
I had three four Masters. One is Yogi Yoganandapuri, Raghupati Yogi he is called. And another one lady Mataaji, Vibhootananda. She is a great enlightened person. The first one Yoganandapuri has taught Yoga, the traditions of yoga to me. The second one gave the knowledge and experience of Vedanta. Of course, I had the inspiration and the mystical connection with Ramakrishna and Ramana Maharishi. The some more sadhus have helped me, the wandering monks. They may not be like, I can’t say they are Gurus, but they have given big inspiration, great inspiration for me. If I have to describe the relationship between me and the Master, I can say, fortunately or unfortunately, I was chosen by them, in the very young age. So it was not like a flat relationship. I grew under them, at their feet. So it was like a grandfather and grandmother relationship. He is more like a grandfather. And ….. …. …. I can say, very strong, deep relationship. See, last one hour I did not struggle for words. Now I am struggling for words. This, I think this is the definition of that relationship. That’s all. This defines the relationship much better than anything else.
Compere: Swamiji, this question has come from two or three, in various places. I have with me one of them. I will read that to you. Its about the loss of someone close to you. Some wonderful and gifted children leave this world, quite early in life, without really having a chance to execute their full potential and leave their parents really very sad and incontrollable. How can we explain this and how will these parents cope?
Two things, ma. One, if this question is really asked, I never give any philosophical answer for this kind of questions. All I do usually is I hold their hand and share, partake in their suffering. No philosophical answer can heal. No philosophical answer can really help the situation. Only sharing their suffering and just trying to help them to heal is the only solution. If I had the answer, if I have to use few words, I can say we don’t know the full life. Please understand, life does not mean seventy eighty years you are living in the planet earth. Life is much more than that. So, we don’t know the full reason. He may not even have much karmas to accomplish here. He might have had only little karmas left. Little bit to finish. So he came and finished that, doesn’t want to acquire more and he has, went back. I will tell you one incident which really happened. There was a four year old baby brought to me, autistic baby for healing. Please understand, this is a real incident which happened, in USA. He was born and brought up in the Telugu family. The child was brought to me for healing. I put the hand on the child and started healing, means, usually I don’t create any sankalpa, that let him be healed or anything. Just I put the hand and relax into the inner space and connect with that life which is reflecting in the other body. So the moment I connected, the child started speaking in Tamil. He started telling, ‘remove your hand, I don’t want you to heal me.’ In a very village Tamil, he told me, in a singular. Not even a cultured way. First thing I was shocked, how this child is speaking in Tamil, because he is born and brought up in Telugu family and I asked them. They said, ‘No chance Swamij, none of us know even a single word Tamil. How he is speaking in Tamil, we don’t know.’ I asked I thought maybe some, he is possessed. I asked him, why are you saying not to heal me, why are you asking me to take my hands. He told me in Tamil, ‘kayyeiddraa ----‘ that’s a word in a very colloquial Tamil. Singular, just to remove your hands. And, I asked the baby, I asked that child, why are you asking me to remove my hands, remove my hands and healing you have got. He said that, ‘I don’t want you to heal. I purposely took this body and mind!’ I asked him, ‘Why, why did you take birth as autistic child. He said, ‘I am tired or working and making money and running my life. This time I decided I will not take the responsibility. I want somebody to take care of me. So I took this kind of body and mind.’ I told him, that is ok. But your parents are such nice people, they are good people. You are giving suffering to them. Why did you take birth to them? They are very good people. He says, ‘I took birth to them, because they are good people. They will take care of me. Somebody else means, they will not take care of me. Because they are good people, I took birth to them.’ And he is conversing with me, clearly in Tamil, very fluent, just four year old child. And after few minutes, of course when the being is closed, you can’t heal or you won’t be able to do anything. I had to take my hands out and that boy said, ‘Thank you for having respect for my intentions. Thank you for having respect for.’ Because an enlightened consciousness can go beyond, but I said, No. No question of interfering in his freedom, in his life. He is thanking me very clearly. He told me in Tamil very clearly, ‘Thank you for respecting my intentions to live.’ Please understand, I am not justifying, I am not philosophizing or I am not trying to give you any words. I am just sharing this one incident. If it helps you, if it heals you let that healing happen. That’s all I can say. This incident shows very clearly. We are clearly deciding the parents, place, everything. Everything. Please be very clear. We are responsible. We are responsible. Only thing, we forget after landing, all the reasons, why we took the decision. We forget, after landing we forget the reasons or the mental setup with which we took this decision. Just because we forget the reasons, we start blaming the decision. We start blaming the decision. Please understand, stand up and be very clear, you are responsible for all the decisions. Then at least now you will have the openness, the clarity, freedom, to change your decisions for the future. To change for the next life. So I don’t think this what you say that, that kind of situations are accidents. Maybe they are individual decisions. If this idea heals you, gives you a mental inner healing, accept this idea. Otherwise, it’s ok. There is no other word or no other philosophy can help you.
Compere: Swamiji, this is a question I think everybody has asked himself or herself at least once in life. What is the purpose of my life?
I can say purpose of life is awakening to the life itself. Please understand, becoming intense to the life itself is the purpose of life. There is no separate purpose. If you say there is a separate purpose, then life has become meaningless. Understand, then the purpose has become meaningful. It’s like a you are centering your life to achieve that purpose, then life has no meaning. Please understand, if life has some purpose then life has no meaning. If you are selling, you have to sell your life for that purpose. I don’t think life has some any separate purpose. I can say one of our books the Karma Yoga, of Gita. The commentary on the Karma Yoga of Gita, we have named that book as the Beauty of Purposelessness, meaning of the life. Life is purposeless. If you understand, you will understand the meaning of the life. Life has a meaning but no purpose. Awaken to the life. Awakening to the life itself is the purpose of the life. Be intense to the life. Whatever you are doing, let the intensity be added to your life. I think that is the meaning of the life. That is the purpose of the life. There is no separate purpose, purpose. You see, people who are really enjoying the external infrastructure, the comforts they say, developing bigger and bigger infrastructure is the purpose. They become politicians. And people who enjoy the inner silence, they say achieving the inner silence is the purpose of life. They become the religious leaders or the spiritual leaders, whatever names you can give. I can say neither the external infrastructure, nor the inner space. I can say that both can be the purpose. When you achieve the meaning, both may happen around you. But if you make any one as purpose, you will miss the other one. The moment you miss the other one, lot of confusion, chaos. The apoornatva, the missing something starts happening in you. I can say from my experience, intensity is the meaning of the life. Intensity is the purpose of the life. Neither the outer world infrastructure nor the inner world silence alone. The inner world silence also happens when you are awakened to the purpose. Otherwise, you are running behind the silence. Nowhere you will achieve the effect. The person who is running behind the silence will be more disturbed, because any small thing can become a disturbance for him. Any small thing can become a disturbance for him. So, I don’t think any one is a purpose. People whatever they think as purpose they start teaching to others also as the life’s purpose. I can say intensity is the only purpose of life.
Compere: Swamiji, reality and dreams are closely interlinked and at times interchangeable. What is the difference between them?
Mmm, this is a wonderful idea, wonderful truth. Please understand, ultimately there is no difference. Ultimately there is no difference. If you are here you think this is reality. If you are in dream, you think dream is reality. Where you are, that is reality for that moment. That’s all. There is no other scale. In the dream you can never imagine, it’s a dream. In the reality, now you can never think, it’s a one more dream. For example, for Shankara, this is a dream, because he has gone beyond this frequency. See, when you come out of the dream, come to this frequency, dream looks dream. But when you are in the dream itself, it will not look like a dream. So when you go beyond this frequency also, this will also look like a one more dream. Please understand this is a reality, as long as you are in this frequency. This is a dream, if you have moved out of this frequency, that’s all. There is no scale. If you are in this frequency, this is reality, that is dream. If you are in that frequency, that is reality and this is dream. In the dream if you, even if you remember about your real life, you think it is a dream. In the reality, even if you remember about the dream, you think it is a dream. So, just it is a frequency, in which you are staying. There is no other scale to explain which is reality or. See, if you believe this more, more time you will spend with this, more time you will enjoy this, more you will experience this. So you will call this as a reality. If you believe that as a dream, more time you will spend with that, more time you will enjoy that. People who believe that as a dream become artists. People who believe this as a dream, becomes industrialists, that’s all. People who understand both are dreams become spiritualists.
Compere: Swamiji, there are many questions, but we will take the last two. This gentlemen or lady would like to know what is motivation and how do I motivate myself?
Motivational speakers are the people who create all chaos in the planet earth. I don’t know, Sorry for telling the truth. Sometime it hurts. Sometime truth hurts. I know so many motivational speakers. I ask them, how do you prepare your lecture. They tell, ‘We feel very dull to prepare the lecture. Whatever thought crosses our mind, that we should prepare our lecture, that I go and repeat, that is what is my lecture.’ See naturally, I am fighting with my mind to, ‘Oh I have to prepare this, I have to do this, I have to do that. All that, whatever idea comes up and I am not able to execute. I am not able to convince myself go out and start talking.’ See this motivation, somehow I don’t believe in motivation. I believe more in opening up the reality. See, let us open the being to the reality and whoever comes in front of us let us open them to the reality. So, whatever happens, let it happen. See motivation means, like a sometime, we motivate people. Especially these companies hire motivators, why you know, because you don’t listen to the manager. You know whatever he talks he has a vested interest. So they bring somebody else. Whatever they can’t say, the motivator says. That’s all. That is the essence. That is why he is paid. That is why he is paid. See, the big problem with the motivational speakers is they don’t know why they are motivating. They just get paid and they are motivating that’s all. For that, who pays them, he decides the tune. He just motivates left and right for what the company wants you. It’s like a one more, maybe I can say intellectual way of threatening, instead of straightaway saying. See, straightaway telling if you don’t work you will not receive this, this, making you work through the greed, making you work through the fear. Motivational speakers are, like making you work through the greed, that’s all. So somehow the final purpose is making you work, that’s all. So I don’t think the motivational speakers can lead you to reality. See, many time when the reality opens in front of you, suddenly you may even decide to lose the job or resign the job. I say that courage to go through that, even those, that kind of moments is what I call spirituality, tapas. Courage to go through all kinds of ups and downs is what I call tapas. So opening up to the reality is totally different from the motivation. So, I feel you if you are not able to motivate you, you are in the right zone. Please understand, you are in a right zone. Continue to analyze the truth. Whatever happens, have the courage to go with it. So don’t think, continuously you need to motivate yourself. See if you are thinking that continuously you should motivate yourself, your manager is sitting inside you. He has somehow managed to get in, to get inside you. He is sitting inside your inner space, because constantly he is telling, you started believing, motivating you is your religion. No. I think the truth of you is your religion, not motivating you. Please understand, I don’t want to motivate you and I don’t want you to motivate yourself. Be very clear, analyze. When you analyze and if you go through some down periods and anything happens, it is ok. The courage to go through that all that ups and downs is what I call tapas and a seeker should have it. A sincere seeker should have this courage.
Compere: Swamiji, this is the final question. Since, how to be free from our fears, feeling of selfishness and opposite emotions that are in my body, in my self, in my mind.
Maybe I can answer with this one technique. Today what you heard, just remember for eleven days. Please understand it is a very powerful method. I have done a small research on this technique in our University with a group of our brahmacharys and students. It’s a very powerful technique. Directly you can’t do anything about selfishness. Directly you can’t do anything about fear. Directly you can’t do anything about greed. Let me be very open. Directly you cannot attack them. However you see, if you attack the fear, the greed will come. If you attack the greed, fear will come. Actually you can attack the greed only with the fear, you can attack the fear only with the greed. To attack one you need the other weapon. You will have one weapon and attack the other, once the other is over, this weapon what will you do with this weapon. How will you attack this weapon? So you take another one weapon, attack this weapon, and then what will happen to this weapon? Now you have to find out another weapon to attack this weapon. It is a continuous disturbance. Please understand, so you can’t directly do anything. It’s like a Vali vadha. You can’t directly attack Vali. The Rama, there is a beautiful story in the Ramayana, anybody who faces the Vali directly, half of their power will come to him. So this selfishness, all this fear, greed, all are like a Vali. If you face them directly, half of your qualities will go away to them. You can’t do anything. So you have to hide behind the seven trees and only send the astra, you have to only send the arrow. The arrow is remember, whatever you are seeing, experiencing is a dream. Please understand, you don’t have to struggle with this idea. Remember, just by this remembrance, your small, small decisions will change. See, if you start remembering from today, it is not that tomorrow itself you will say, ‘Oh it’s a dream, I am not able to work I am going to drop the work.’ No. But, when somebody hurts you, you may regain, you may come back, you may become balanced in ten minutes, ‘Ah, it’s a one more dream.’ You may not, you may not make big decisions. But the small, small decisions allow the small decisions to happen. Let this understanding grow in you. Let this idea sink in you. You will see, automatically whatever struggles you are going through starts getting settled. This is only practical method. Please, I wanted to, I don’t want to give you some words, philosophies and all those things. And enough, there are enough people to give you more and more words and philosophies. I don’t want to do that. This is a practical thing I can offer you. Just remember this, take this. This is supposed to be last?
Compere: That’s right. You would like to take some more?
No, no, no, that’s alright. I am asking you. Please understand, take this one truth. I am giving you the essence of whatever I shared with you, whatever I discussed with you, the essence is Shakti to change whatever you can change. Express the energy to change whatever you can change and have the buddhi, intelligence to accept whatever you can’t change and remember whatever you see, whether you change or accept or anything, it is changing dream. Remember that yukthi. Live all these three. You will be living mukthi, the liberation. So let you all become the beings who are living enlightenment, the Jeevan mukthas.
